I have a friend who has become interested in Starcraft after watching a game with me while he was bored. I want to make him an SC fan but it's not easy.

The problem is he has never touched an RTS in his life. To give you an idea of where he's at, he does not know what the terms "mining" or "production building" or "rush" mean. At one point in the game, he asked me what buttons players press to move their armies around.

I figure it's best to just sit him down to play the game for a few minutes but he just wants to watch. After failing horribly to explain what's happening in a lot of the "exciting" vods, I showed him Skyhigh vs. Jaedong in Winners League and he really liked that one.

+ Show Spoiler +

Can the unlimited brainpower of TL give me some recommendations of strategic rushes like in that game above? Or some ideas on how to ease him into the game while keeping things exciting?

Liquipedia !

Most of the "heavy topics" have lots of vods as examples to illustrate concepts.

Uhhhhhh let him play single player a while? There's no real substitute for just playing the game, and it's better to start in a pressure-free environment i.e. not lrning2multiplayer.

I hope you know it is photoshopped.. (I think?)
The projector definitely doesn't give a picture that clear, especially off of a camera.

Try Jaedong vs Best on Andromeda.

Not all of it may be relevant, but I hope you can pick some stuff out of it.

Sounds like me 4 years ago. SC was the first RTS I ever played and it's the only one I ever stuck to longer than a week. What got me to continue was the single player campaign and classic Boxer vods.

Thanks for the replies guys.

The problem with getting him to play is just that he simply not interested. All he wants to do is watch. So that idea is kind of out the window right now.

The other problem is that he doesn't understand RTS period. Right now I'm just trying to find good games to show him the basic concepts RTS revolves around, and how deep and complex SC strategies can be. The Boxer rushes or other stuff like the pimpest plays videos fly over his head. He doesn't understand the difficulty or they are too straightforward/boring for someone who barely understands what a rush is, and why it is so risky. The Skyhigh vs Jaedong game was perfect because it was really clear for him to see all the concepts come together before his eyes.

I found another game, fantasy vs guemchi on heartbreak.

Another from Blizzcon:

nalra mindgame proxy pylon, iris floating rax minetrap, etc

If anyone can think of more strategic games like this, please post! I really want to show him a good game where a terran loses to a hidden proxy robo or dt or something before showing him the blizzcon game, so he fully understands the trick nal ra is using.

I think there was one game where BeSt(?, maybe Bisu?) was in his prime and he completely owned some Terran with a proxy robo because of some amazing micro. Trying to find it now...

I think the Terran was in the bottom left location and the Protoss was in the top left

I wouldnt recommend having him play the single player mode because he will pick up bad habits and just mass one unit. You need to tell him builds and have him memorize the numbers asap. If he doesnt know how to move units he can learn that in a matter of seconds.
Why would you ever choose failure, when success is an option.

IMO, this is bad advice. There's no other way to get someone into playing. Multiplayer right away is the quickest way to lose someone's interest, as they won't understand anything.

Plus in campaign they learn all the units, tech trees and abilities quite easily.

leta vs luxury on destination is perfect

edit: think they played multiple games on that map come to think about it, not even sure if it was luxury anymore, it's a game were leta puts a bunker behind the natural and basically ends the game with it

also flash vs bisu on medusa, another bunker rush

10 million plus disagree with you. Just buy him a vanilla SC disc. Give it to him. Blizz magic will do the rest of the leg work : ) It's a no brainer.

show her vods commentated by tasteless from wcg, those were super fun.

Also, some gom vods tell a lot of newbie info without the bw terms.

Although people have mixed views on this, watching English commentary really helps people develop their initial interest in pro SC. I've gotten a few people hooked just by showing them games like Flash v Boxer (commentated by an unnamed commentator) or Stork v ForGG. Even if he doesn't know how RTS works, with some additional audio help, you can pretty much see that there are really cool strategies unfolding.
