I spend a lot of time on trains (4 hours of commuting a day) so I've got a fair amount of time on my hands. I would much prefer to be reading or doing some work but looking at text on the train gives me a nasty headache in 10 minutes flat. So I was thinking it might be cool to work on my grip so I'm doing something more productive than just sleeping.

As such I was looking around at things like this:

I found quite a few different kinds and brands and was curious if anyone has any preference or tips on which to use and which to avoid.

Captains of crush should be the real deal. Dunno how beginner friendly they are tho

yes. captains of crush seconded.

http://www.captainsofcrushgrippers.com/ironmind/opencms/grippers/

take a look at the ratings on the left column for the difficulties for each. they seem to have become more beginner friendly too, as back when my friend and i used them, the easiest was the trainer (which was very challenging if you're only acquainted with cheap grippers).

That actually helps me contain my anger. I just push down as hard as I can and it makes me feel better

Not sure I'm looking for something so terribly hardcore, definitely the first time I'll be actively trying to work on my grip. Definitely a beginner. I just looked around Modell's and Sports Authority for some $5-11 ones.

And no, I wouldn't feel terribly weird using it on the train. It's not like I'm lifting weights or anything.

Also, what's a plonker? Never heard that term. O_o

What about listening to music, books on tape, or old radio shows? I really like listening to old Loveline episodes to pass the time on planes and trains. You can download some here:

As for your grip, my advice is to beat off more frequently.

Ouch, sorry about your commute. I thought my 140 min two way commute was bad...

According to the Urban Dictionary

"plonker

dope, idiot, moron, wally, pillock, dunderhead, dimwit
You are such a plonker, [Phyre]."

captains of crush is good but only works one type of grip strength
albeit the most commonly used grip

I want one of these for my spare time:

I stopped that a long time ago. I had to start focusing more on my financial situation, so I gave it up.

I still work out often tho.

The Gyro can reach up to 9,000 RPM and creates 25lbs of torque resistance to increase grip strength, increase range of motion, and to condition arm, elbow, and shoulder muscles.

It's loud and I don't think its as a good exercise.

You could try to go for some bodyweight exercises on the train, but you will probably sweat. Leaves you with the 3 standard things to do on a train. Sleep, talk to random strangers or lock yourself in the toilet and fap.

oh u have one?

well, I didn't mean it standalone. It's more of something to compliment other grip training (like captains of crush).
