In my experience, the best way to get something done on a regular basis is to "make it a habit". By "habit", I mean that certain activities should be done at standard times of the day.

The human will is honestly pretty weak. Left alone, we'll naturally drift away from the things that need to get done. Thus, any outside agents that will allow us to get things done with a lower level of willpower should be welcome[1].

For example, when I was younger, I had an incredibly difficult time brushing my teeth every day. But at some point I realized that unless I get into a habit of brushing my teeth, "bad things" should happen to my mouth down the line. I decided that I would consistently brush my teeth directly before going to bed, and make this a pattern.

In the beginnning, I only had about a 70% success rate. I still had spells where I wouldn't brush my teeth for 3 days straight. I struggled, but kept at it. At some point, it became completely natural for me to brush my teeth each night, and now it feels completely wrong for me to not brush my teeth before bed. I've expanded this further, and I now brush my teeth once in the morning after showering (which itself is a habit now), and floss, brush, and rinse my teeth (with fluoride) before sleeping.

The exact way in which I successfully made this into a habit is somewhat unknown to me. "Just keep doing it until it sticks" sounds like a completely flawed way of going about it, yet in hindsight this seems like what I did. My attempt would fail, and I'd tweak something and try again. Or my attempt would fail, and I'd try to find another intrinsic motivator and try again. Perhaps the key is to truly believe that the habit I'm trying to form is important and valuable to me. It's pretty undeniable that brushing my teeth is super important, in terms of health, appearance, and also finances[2].

Dental activities are not the only habit that I've successfully formed. The most prominent one is my gym routine. I go to the gym 3 times a week after work at well defined times (usually around 8:30pm), on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday/Saturday (depending on my fatigue level). Working out is an annoying and painful routine, and making it a habit that I believe in has been a boon to my attendance rate. It also helps that the program I am on is a very regular, well defined routine.

For a few months last year, I wrote a blog every night from around 11pm to 1am (in Japanese). However, I quickly realized that this routine was suboptimal. I've decided to adopt a different habit this time around; one that I believe is superior.

My current attempt is to wake up at 7am and write a blog (in English) before going to work. My mind is sharp at this time, and productivity should be high. On top of that, the need to wake up at 7am naturally leads to me needing to go to sleep by midnight. The pieces of the puzzle come into place, so to speak.

I have a professional and personal need to improve my writing ability, so the underlying reason to form this habit is very real. If I didn't have such a need, and blogging was a "would be nice" kind of thing in my life, then I imagine that elevating this into a regular habit would be much more difficult.

Today, on day 1 of this new attempt at a habit, I succssfully woke up at 7am. I successfully wrote this blog, and will hopefully be able to repeat the performance tomorrow. If I fail, I fail. I'll figure out what went wrong and what extra help I can give myself so that I will have a better chance at succeeding next time.

As long as I believe that this is important, I'm confident I'll make it happen one way or another.

Just posted a blog about my game making progress and linked to your other blogs which I found good and this one is actually the most appropriate to my blog and reasoning.

So your teeth is shiny white? I've brushed my teeth for so long since childhood every day that it's still somewhat yellow/white-ish color.
But yeah just doing things at specific times to make it a habit gives tremendous advantages like you've stated
I brush my teeth because I'm actually scared of going to the dentists so I try to avoid it by brushing my teeth :p

But how long are you going to maintain your new habit?
If you define it SMART (specific, measurable, acceptable, realistic and time bound). Then you can say it's a success after the time bound you specified and eventually it becomes a habit if you lengthen the time each time like with brushing your teeth.

Have you heard of BJ Fogg and his "Tiny Habits" theory/program?

Essentially, you set a tiny habit (like flossing 1 tooth) to an anchor (a habit that you do often) and to have some "practice" in creating habits. I thought it was pretty interesting. Fogg is a professor at Stanford that has done a ton of work in behavioral psychology, so I trust him that this type of stuff works.

Relevant docs:
BJ's Introduction to Tiny Habits: http://bit.ly/tiny-startnow
Ideas for habits: http://bit.ly/tiny-examples
BJ critiquing his student's habits: http://bit.ly/tinyhabitreview

I got to say i disagree with the way ur planning out ur life. Dental care is very important ive had braces for 7 years(dont even ask how i was on the verge of the doctor telling me i dont need them on year 1, dentist make mistakes also...).

But.... structuring ur life around routines is a bad habit to get, because ur basically giving up your freedom, u start acting like a robot and doing things mechanically while not looking the tought behind.

Say u like cheese and u get into a routine of trying a new cheese every night. Year after year u eat cheese and u start getting fat. U are conscious of that fact but now u can't get it out of your life(routine). Worst case scenario u got diabetes and have to go on a strict regime.

U are also giving up the chance to have new experiance in life, say your routine includes going to the gym from 2-4 every monday. U meet this hot girl one monday morning, things go well u flirt and everything and ur gonna propose to go get a cup of coffee or whatever... guess what ur gonna say to yourself in your head screw it i got to go to the gym.

Getting in alot of routine also scares u of trying to explore new things because u are in your confort zone. My life is all planned out i have to do this do that do this do that aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

I've found that chronic apathy is a quick way to unravel habits and favour passivity over action.
The cur foretells the knell of parting day; The loafing herd winds slowly o'er the lea; The wise man homeward plods; I only stay to fiddle-faddle in a minor key.

I haven't read of the program's name, but I remember seeing something similar in content here on TL.
I think this is basically what I'm doing though. The dental work is connected with going to bed, and gym work is connected with getting out of work or class.

The blogging in the morning will hopefully be connected to "waking up"

In theory, what you're saying is certainly valid. If every waking moment of your life is planned and routinized, it'd be a pretty boring life. But in reality, do you know a single person who has actually tried to do this and has accomplished this? It's hard enough to make 1 productive habit, let alone so many that it completely dictates your life.

Even in the chance that your days become largely guided by routine, there are many ways to still leave freedom in your life. For instance, you could set aside your weekend to be largely flexible and spontaneous.

Honestly I think that having a well structured and efficient life is a good problem to have. Human nature makes it easier to be lax on commitments than the other way around.

Oo back in January I was moping around with making a game in ruby (before I dropped my efforts to focus more on writing).

Stick with writing haha
I like the blogs. Even took the time to go to your blog site and read more
Definitely will check up on honesttea's blogs if I see them.

What the hell about objective-c man :p Well I'm still a senior CS student so I'm still naive I like it so far but I'll switch in the future anyways (that's the plan at least).

I'm expecting another blog today of you. Especially since you're trying to make it a habit :p
