This Friday I'm going on a 3 night cruise to the Bahamas.

Cruise Information: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacruise/cruiseDetails/itineraryAndPricing.do;jsessionid=0000gw36KHHFs4MZv3_TIVL-Jq7:12hdhua36?packageCode=MJ03S009&sailDate=1090410&date=200903&selectedCurrencyCode=&promoType=&hasSenior=&hasMilitary=&hasFireandPolice=&state=

We leave Miami late afternoon on Friday, and arrive in CocoCay Saturday morning. We leave there dinnertime and arrive at Nassau Sunday morning. We leave there dinnertime and arrive back at Miami Monday morning. Pretty standard I think.

I've never been on a cruise before which is why I wanted to do it (my parents would never go on a cruise [seasickness] so we have never done a family vacation aboard a cruise). I've also never been to the Bahamas and I want to check them out. I'm going with a friend who is in a similar situation (never been on a cruise). There are a few issues I'd love to try to get some advice on.

1: Seasickness
I've never been out in the open ocean before so I have no idea if I am prone to getting seasick or not. I'll bring some 'stuff' with me just in case, but I purposefully am doing a very short and easy cruise. Some friends of mine went on a cruise a few months ago; they left from New York City headed for Bermuda and got caught in a storm... needless to say it was rough sailing but they are veterans and managed. I probably wouldn't have been too happy...

Is there anything I should try doing prior to going on the cruise? What medication should I bring? I heard there is a 'patch' but I'm not sure what it is.

2: Excursions
I pre-registered with the cruise line to do jet skiing at CocoCay. I've heard that booking all of your excursions through the cruise line is overly expensive, and that many things will be available to do after you show up. Is this true? What do you recommend to do at CocaCay, and at Nassau? I'm going to avoid spending all of my time at the marketplace next to where the cruise lands =o

3: Aboard the Ship
I've read pretty much everything the cruise line website has to say about the amenities and policies of the ship. Specifically I'm going to be on Majesty of the Seas. Any suggestions for which things to do, or what to avoid?

I really don't want to dress up for a formal dinner but I guess that's just part of the experience ><

4: Packing
What should I bring with me? I can go shopping for any clothing/gear I might need prior to flying down to Miami. If anyone can think of anything that was useful when they did a similar trip, please let me know.

If there is anything else anyone wants to offer advice on, please feel free.

The boat is big enough and the route to bahamas isn't that bad so sea sickness shouldn't be a big issue. You'll get used to it within a couple hours - that being said get some Gravol, can get it at a pharmacists - its solid for dealing with motion sickness, cars planes boats etc. My parents gave it to me when i was growing up when we'd take ferry to ireland or orkney isles cause i was the puke master and it really works good.

Have fun!

Is this Dramamine in the usa? I've heard my parents mention taking Dramamine before.

Never been there so I can't give any advice, but have fun!
If you watch Godzilla backwards it's about a benevolent lizard who helps rebuild a city and then moonwalks into the ocean.

Gravol for seasickness. Immodium for the explosive diarrhea.

You will have explosive diarrhea.

Seasickness isn't as common as you would think.

Everything you can do in Mexico you can get cheaper in Mexico than in the US. Especially if you listen to a timeshare talk.

Dress up. It's fun. Usually the cruise ships have a top of the line restaurant that you need to make reservations for. It's worth it to do once.

You don't need much gear besides a camera and some flip flops and swim trunks. Sunglasses, suntan lotion, an appetite.
Never give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about.

Just an aside, if you take Dramamine, be SURE that you do not take too many. I personally know people who have accidentally overdosed on Dramamine, and it should be stated that Drama is a very powerful psychoactive occasionally used recreationally. Even if you're having a hell of a time sea-sickness wise, do NOT take over the recommended dosage. Hallucinations and bad trips are commonplace.

Anyway, on topic, check out the snorkeling, the Bahamas are awesome for that.

Are you saying the gravol makes you need imodium, or that I'll need the imodium for another reason?

Mexico? I'm not going there.

I don't personally find dressing up fun.

I'm glad to hear there isn't any unexpected essential gear.

Thanks for the advice about Dramamine... I'll keep that in mind.

I've never done snorkeling... Out of curiosity what do you do if your vision isn't good? Do you wear contacts/glasses under goggles?

There's all sorts of weird bacteria in food and water. After a while people get desensitized to it, but if you go to a new place you've never been to, there's a higher chance of getting your intestines messed with. I've heard a lot of horror stories about trips to tropical regions that were ruined by people getting sick. With the negligible size it takes up in your luggage, there isn't much reason not to have it.

I think this would be worse if I was going to Mexico, but I'll definitely take this advice. TY.
