Hello. I'm checking in from South Korea. I didn't bring my laptop, the relatives I'm staying with don't have stable wifi, and the room with the modem in it is unbearably hot.

As a result, I avoid it at all costs, and spend most of my free time when at home watching MBC/OGN (turned out to be channel 510 and 511 respectively).

Anyway, thoughts...I really like Seoul from an outsider's perspective, especially coming from California. Because it's earthquake country, we don't get the kind of population density and crowded madness that you see in these kinds of metropolitan areas. However, it doesn't have the cultural diversity that a city like New York would have, but has a cultural unity that really gives the city an organic feel, as opposed to the often cold one one could get from such a city (as NY).

Everyone interacts with everyone on some level...you can stop and talk to little kids (in Korean) and they'll stop and reply. More importantly, you won't get stares from everyone immediately suspecting you of being a pedophile. I mean, it's not like magical; the point I'm trying to make is that the city being unicultural lends itself towards a more connected feeling or something...it's hard to describe. Again, though, this is from the perspective of a person observing.

The subway system here is fucking amazing. It's efficient, easy to understand, and is really smooth and just...fun to ride on. Once again, due to California being earthquake-prone, we don't have such things.

The food so far has been pretty good...it's nothing absolutely exotic and foreign to me, having grown up in a Korean household with first generation immigrant parents.

The city is just fascinating to see. It has a noticeable character. Whenever we're driving around, it's fun just to look out the window at the huge apartment and shop clusters and whatnot.

On the flipside, however...

The weather here is fucking terrible. I'm from socali, so I'm for the most part fine with heat. However, I can only stand a nice, dry, desert heat. It is humid as fuck here. Even walking out to a local restaurant is a fucking nightmare.

The Koreans here...I knew before I came here that it would basically be a city of fobs and Korean ahjumahs/ahjushis, but god was I not prepared for that. The older people are whatever, but the young people are so like...superficial/vain.

I heard it's a mass-oriented mindset kind of thing...the cultural unity lends itself towards this kind of thing, where one on the inside fits in perfectly fine and life goes swell, but you have to fit yourself in, or whatever. I dunno.

It sucks because I end up feeling awkward whenever I go out with just my cousins. We're all full-blooded Korean, but can barely speak enough Korean to get by. I dress in metal band shirts and have a beard...I basically look like a bum. My relatives said I'd stand out because of the beard...but after they said that, I've noticed people doing double-takes passing by me and shit. lol.

I managed to catch the MSL group with Fantasy and Jaedong in it live at the MBC studio. That studio is fucking TINY. They use some intense trickery with a very wide angle lens in all of their panning shots. You can catch me in some of the VODs. I made a sign, which I'll post pictures of later when I manage to edit through my photos.

I never understood why people said the MBC studio is as underwhelming as they said...but now that I've been there...like damn. It's...not as cool as it looks in the VODs.

But still...I got to see NaDa, Fantasy, Jaedong and Leta all in the same night. (:

I even saw Kangmin...even though the commentators are in a different room, he stepped out to talk to one of the crew. lol.

In the VOD before Horang2's game, if it includes that part where the camera dude showed some girl in the audience that looked like Horang2 and did the split shot, if you see the little Asian peace sign coming from the side of the shot of the girl, that's me. haha.

I'm planning on hitting up some more MBC PL matches, and I want to try to make it to an OGN one...but it'll depend on the other shit to do.

Ok, I'll stop now. -___-

It's been fun so far...just the weather has been fucking horrible...but still fun.

I'll update later with photos. (:

Currently, it's raining. Now, everyday we will have a lot of rain. After the rain finish, the weather will be horrible... really really hot. The weather we got last week was nothing next to will come soon... TT. Air Con powa!

The humidity is because it's the monsoon season so you better get used to it because it doesn't let up. It's really cool in New York, I don't think it's gone above 70 yet and whenever it feels like it's about to get hot, it rains ^^

It's different for an MSL or OSL final, when I went, it was in a totally different place that was fucking far from where I lived, like 2 hours on the train and the place was huge and the lines to get in were so long.

I don't know when I'm going to go to MBC next, though. I want to go today for Samsung vs Hite, but I have no idea if we're actually going to go.

Definitely...but it's different for Korea. The US is a country that thrives on diversity, and that diversity is both commonplace and a staple of the country and its communities. Korea is a country of Koreans...

Fuck the rain, man...fuck the rain.

We went to that traditional Korean village place while it was fucking raining, I tried to take photos, and I fucking got owned. Water leaked into my lens and now the auto-focus motor won't fucking work anymore.

That was a $300 lens...T_T.

Roll on Winter - I hate Summer here because the commute to work is so stuffy. The Winters are awesome though - I don't think we'll get as much snow in Seoul as we used to when I lived further down South, but that's okay because I prefer not to be stuck inside when it's colder.

I heard the winters here are great, yeah. I love snow just because we never get any in SoCali, lol.

And is the hot weather really that bad? I live in NorCal (Bay Area) and it's much cooler than SoCal, but when I went to Taiwan over the summer it didn't seem as bad as you put it. I mean, it is pretty darn uncomfortable but you make it seem like you're in hell lol

I think for me it's because I come from England and our weather is never very extreme either way. Also I adore the thunder storms we sometimes have here I really like rain. I think for anyone who comes from a hotter climate it wouldn't be so bad. Especially not if you're used to humidity which us Brits are not.

I totally got owned today...I wanted to see Khan play today at MBC, but for whatever reason thought the match was at 1pm. It turned out to be at 6:30, and got totally fucked. T_T

Oh, but I saw Sea[shield]!! And he was wearing his TL shirt!!

While I was swearing and kicking walls with my cousin when we found out we mixed up the times, I noticed some guy who looked suspiciously like Sea walk by with a light blue shirt on...but I didn't think much of it. After a while, we decided to drop by the restroom before leaving. When I walked in, I noticed some guy was in one of the stalls taking a shit. I walked into a different stall and took care of business. The other guy walked out.

When I came out, my cousin, who was waiting for me outside went, "dude that guy that just walked out had a TL shirt on, lol!"

And I was like, "lol wait...he came from the room that says MBCgame Hero on it...OMG THAT WAS SEA"

I'm kicking myself for not noticing earlier and trying to harass a photo out of him...in his TL shirt too...):

Awww that's really cute that he wears his TL shirt for practice. At LOOX the players are almost constantly wandering about between practice sessions and it's pretty easy to bump into them. The MBC practice room is so effing nice - they really decorated it in a cool style and most of the players dress casually for practice. Poor you getting stuck at LOOX early though - it's so boring there. In between PL and MSL in the old days I used to park myself in the back corridor with some food and player count out of sheer boredom.

Reading your OP make me miss Korea

What you say about the mass-orientated mindset is sad but true. Reason why parents are spending thousands of dollars on tuitions and all, so that they will not be looked down by the rest of the society and will be able to blend in. Although from what I hear from my cousins, it seems to be slowly dying down (thank you, economic downturn!)

Finally got some peace and quiet long enough to check my email (and TL as well, of course). Between going out for whatever touristy things and having to entertain my demonically energetic five year old niece...lol.

Man, if those of you in Korea haven't gone to see Nanta yet, that musical show thing that's been running since '97, fucking go see it. It's immensely fun.

And yes...I am still regretting and kicking myself, even at this very moment, for not having recognized Sea sooner. The LOOX center is fucking boring...that place is like dead and depressing, and when no one's around, it feels like a set for some dystopian scifi movie. It's also the dumbest abbreviation ever...somehow, "Luxury One stOp multipleX" = LOOX. -____-;;

I don't think I'll be doing much more SC related stuff, though. I'm about to leave for the airport to fly to Jeju for a few days.

Later all.

Tourist thing?
I'm guessing you did the Seoul City Tour as well.

How was it?
I really liked it. I actually learned/saw a lot of things in Seoul that I wouldn't have had if my mom didn't take my sister/me to that tour.

Although it does get repetitive with all those ancient palaces and such it was still fun.

I NEVER went to Jeju...I wonder what it's like.

I just arrived in Korea (2 days ago).

Do any of you guys plan to go to watch a game? I really don't want to go alone (lol).

And yes, LOOX is in middle of nowhere and looks bad.

I'm in Yong-in and there really isn't much to do around where I am;;

It's also the dumbest abbreviation ever...somehow, "Luxury One stOp multipleX" = LOOX. -____-;;

Ahahaha the names they come up with...

I'm usually at Yongsan Saturday/Sunday - but LOOX - NEVER. Ewh, ewh, ewh. That place makes me angry.

I'm not part of any tour group...we've been mostly visiting relatives and going to places the relatives I'm staying with have been suggesting. The trip to Jeju was total fail...the humidity was even higher than Seoul (which actually has been improving, somehow) there and the tour guide we booked seemed really shady one time...

Also the island and the pension thing we booked (hotel type of place) was pretty run down and seedy.

Anyway...I want to go see some SC matches and whatnot still...

I'm planning on going to OGN tomorrow at 1pm for the SKT vs Woongjin match...hopefully I'll see you there, NeverGG? Expect a chubby Asian dude with a beard, glasses and band shirt on to greet you. (:

LOL - yes I'll be there. Look for a tall white girl with red hair, a big camera and a T1 armband I'll be the one running round like a mad woman after the matches and probably stalking Bunkie with my camera during them.

Heh it looks like I can identify you quite easily.

Do people with you get to go into the press area as well?

No, not generally. They've just put up signs saying 'camera crew only.' as well so I really can't take anyone behind the press line currently. I can't let anyone into the press room itself - although my Mum kept coming in eventhough I told her not to lol.

You can go anywhere you want. Just walk into the press area as if you matter and they won't stop you.

That's wrong - OGN security can and will stop people. They don't let Korean fans inside so they're not going to let foreigners either. I've seen it happen tonnes of times. Confidence gets you so far, but there is no need for a fan to come into the press area (it's actually crappy seating compared to the fan seats.) It's only really a useful space for camera crew and us photographers.

Yep in Yongsan or in Mullae, when you want to watch a match, I advice to go there 2 or 3 hours before the match and write your name on the paper that fans did (that I usually did). Like that, they will say your name like "a teacher and him students" (Kin Min Jeong SSI? Pak June Ssi?" bla bla,) and they will put you behing people, Then, you will enter 1 hour before the match aand you will have your sit.
Anyway, today my alarm clock didnt ring, can't go and watch SKT.... that sucks.
Have fun there PH!!!!!!!

Went to the match today and met and chilled with NeverGG. It was a lot of fun, and she hooked up some photos of me and my brother with Bisu, Fantasy and Canata.

I tried to get one with oov and boxer, but oov fucking dicked me and bailed. Motherfucker.

It was definitely fun hanging out with NeverGG, though...she's chill as fuck.

Sorry I talked so much lol - I get kind of hyper when given a mission/photographing things. I'll send you the photos tonight - they're really funny and the one with Canata came out so cutely.

Obv they don't let Korean fans or random white people in because they don't know how to enter with confidence and authority. Way to refute what I said by agreeing with me! Lol

The Koreans here...I knew before I came here that it would basically be a city of fobs and Korean ahjumahs/ahjushis, but god was I not prepared for that. The older people are whatever, but the young people are so like...superficial/vain.

LOL, we have the best plastic surgeons and you didn't really expect this?

They wouldn't let you in even if you went with confidence - it's just not allowed. They stop and check everyone who tries it - even those who work for the obsing team/fanclub reps etc. Heck even the manager of eSTRO got stopped once because he was new to the job and they didn't recognize him in casual clothing.

Damn, I wanted to see Oz vs STX today at OGN but it seems it's too late.

However, at MBC you can get a seat pretty much. I went there an hour before on a Sat (Sun?) night (5:30) and half the seats were empty.

Btw, what's the side stadium at OGN? What's in there?
Stuck.

It's KeSPA's private PC Bang where they hold Offline Qualifiers and Courage.

I think MBC doesn't fill up as quickly because it's awkward for a lot of people to get to (not to mention all those interior design faults.) I asked the girls from the STX fanclub and they said they only still go to MBC because the STX training room means they can meet with the gamers more often and have longer fan meetings.

As has already been said - the side room is a PC bang style arrangement for holding Courage and qualifiers - it's not used for anything and nothing is broadcast from there usually. When prelims etc aren't on it is usually locked.

MBC doesn't fill up because it's a shitty venue in comparison to OGN. OGN is bigger, more open, and caters to spectators. MBC is built for broadcasting.

LOOX is also a depressing place a fair distance from the subway station, while iPark is connected directly to the metro station thing. That's all there is to it...MBC shafted themselves.

Even today, KT vs Samsung (relatively popular) teams and a very important match the place was only 2/3 full.
