I got a huge MahJong game from my family for my birthday. It's insanely large and weighs like 5 kilos. Not sure if I'd like to play online since I'm still busy in my 3rd game ever (we've been playing for 3 afternoons already). It is pretty epic.

Japanese Mahjong is much more fun IMO, they have the 'riichii' option.

I think mahjong is all about getting greedy. If you play for a 1-2 point win every game, you get pathetic winnings cause of the way money/chips/whatever you're playing for is awarded for points. Usually its 2^x where x is the number of points you have, and the guy who throws the winning tile pays 2^x+1. So basically winning a 5 point hand gives you 64 + 32 + 32 = 128 in 1 round, while winning 2 points gives you 4+4+8 = 16.

So basically winning a 5 point hand gives you 64 + 32 + 32 = 128 in 1 round, while winning 2 points gives you 4+4+8 = 16. In my experience winning many small hands > winning a few big hands when you play for a high scoring hand there's more risk of you throwing out a winning tile, + its harder overall to get the winning tile for yourself. Ping wu + zi mo = 2 x 3 from each player = 6, say you get that twice per wind so in a round your up 36 - w/e you lose, vs 1 pure suit hand per wind which is 7 x 4 = 28 - w/e you lose. playing for smaller hands increases your call ratio much more, + zi mo is way easier to get. + sometimes the risk of you throwing out some giant shit is way smaller, like if your playing for pure characters and the other guy's going pure sticks your gonna have to throw out every stick you pick up. Really not worth it imo, rule of thumb for me is quantity over quality. Yeah if you open up with some baller hand go for it like 8/9 same suit or 3 neutral/same suit pairs, but most of the time safer and smarter play is the way to go, especially when you play for money edit: oh i see you to the whole multiply fan thing =X nvm then. When I play we don't do that cuz that shit gets too fuckin expensive lol 1 dollar a fan really adds up enough as it is =P
