When I read the article on the Nazi campaign in Poland during WW2 I was left with the impression that the Germans had some smooth time fighting the Poles.

However that changed a few days ago. It all started when I heard a song 40 to 1 of the Swedish band Sabaton. Then I wondered what this song is about and I did some research so the Battle at Wizna popped up. I am not going to post the battle details cause you can look it up here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Wizna

Just the numbers and the Army leaders: Heinz Guderian for the Nazis and a guy called Władysław Raginis for the Poles.
Army Strength:
Wehrmacht
42,200 men
350 tanks
657 mortars, guns and grenade launchers
Aircraft support

Polish army
720 men (20 officers)
Six 76 mm guns
42 MGs
2 URs

Now when I look at those numbers I think that the Polish position should have been overrun in a matter of hours. But not, the battle lasted for whole 3 days. Can you imagine this? 720 men holding 42000 under the lead of one of the best military minds of the time for 3 whole days? I was in awe of the courage and morale of the Polish soldiers.

And just for the metal fans, here's the actual song, it's a very good song as is the whole album Art of War by Sabaton. The clip is very nice and has explanations and english subs, enjoy!

Baptized in fire, 40 to 1!!!

What do you mean by that?

All I'm saying is that I found out the Polish campaign wasn't such a tour de Poland as I thought it was and I wanted to share this information. And share the nice song too.

Sorry, it's a political joke.

This clip from the 2004 presidential debates sparked a pretty long-lived meme.

That's really interesting! I had no idea.

Must have been a very tight corridor or a hill or something for that to be possible though..? Reminds me of Hamburger Hill somewhat.

And thanks for sharing that song! It is really good. I kind of forgot about that band, they are very good, indeed.. and I have seem them live!

I'll have to get a hold of that album now.

I think he was trying to make a joke - playing on the fact that Polish events are not covered so much in favour of other, larger players in WWII.. also that the Polish people often feel neglected?

EDIT: Oh, sorry.. I did not know about the "Forgot polan " meme.

Yeah our history is wonderful and dramatic at the same time, too bad its forgotten or disregarded in most cases.

It was a very long entrenched area more fitted for world war 1 type warfare than anything. Fortified areas became much more difficult to hold in the beginning era of airplane bombing/tank pushes though and the Nazi's did have aircraft support at the time.

The poles were entrenched and it helped but they were still able to hold the advancing tank line. People think they could have held much longer than three days if they had some way to destroy enemy tanks... as it stands they killed a great deal of infantry.

Who could forget Jan Sobieski, the "Savior of Vienna and Western European civilization", the "Lion of Lehistan"???

Often enough it´s sad and hopeless though

No wonder your anthem is like that:
"Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła, kiedy my żyjemy."
Poland has not perished yet, as long as we still live.

Yeah, Polish history is fascinating even in recent times. Such is the Czech medieval history. Europe is so rich in wars that I often find myself reading through Wikipedia articles for hours when I can afford the time.

Our military efforts and victories are often marginalized by other countries' success.
Our other military "victories" in WW II were Westerplatte and Monte Casino.
Our (in)famous 306th Polish Fighter Squadron participated in the Battle of England.
Throughout history we had many good leaders and fought in many battles. But alas, history is written by the victors.
