I'm actually very uninformed when it comes to games you can play over a lan. Aside from starcraft I have played very few.
My sister is going to be around for a while and her computer is plugged into the same dsl router as mine is. Am I correct in assuming that this means if we use udp or a similar lan setting for a multiplayer game, that it will work? I could easily test it if I installed starcraft on to her computer but she doesn't really want to play it so there's not much point. After all, there isn't much room for her to improve: proof
She offered to play a cooperative lan game with me (she and I avoid 1:1 games) but I honestly have no idea what games are good for co-op (and not online with other players). She's not that into first person shooters (although it's not a deal-breaker... she's played a few console shooters before). She's also not that into sports or racing. I think the best way to describe her is that she likes the following games (no particular order, just naming a bunch to give an idea):
- Tenchu series (we did the co-op in Wrath of Heaven, but it was pretty weak unfortunately)
- Final Fantasy and FF Tactics/FFTA
- Tomb Raider Series
- Diablo 2 (I don't want to play this though)
- Metal Gear Solid Series
- Vagrant Story
- Puzzle Quest
- Sonic the Hedgehog Series
- .Hack Series
- Etrian Odyssey
- Resident Evil 2
- Azure Dreams
- Izuna Unemployed Ninja
- Odin Sphere
- Disgaia
- Xmen Legends
If there's any other information I could provide that would be helpful, please let me know. I just need to know if the lan will work as I'm expecting, and what games you could recommend that my sister would like (me too, but she's generally more limiting). If you suggest one, please explain why you suggested it!
Whether it's free or costs money doesn't really matter. I kinda expect there to be slim pickings, but my research didn't yield any good results so I'm hoping people know of co-op modes in games that we would enjoy but have never played.
BTW if there is a ps/ps2/ps3 game that you think would be excellent, those are also on the table.

You could 2v2 together on ICCUP!

The serious sam games are really fun to play in co-op. It is a fps but not that hardcore or anything and when you die you just respawn. Tons of fun with my friends playing those on lan.

Multiplayer modes support two to four players in split-screen action on a single computer. In cooperative mode, gamers can join forces against the hordes of enemies."
This is for the first encounter... you can't play on different computers?

CS is really easy to pick up and play. It's the most basic of FPSs, pretty much. It's quick to install; if you have an installer on a CD you can get everything up and running quickly.
But what I would recommend would be Doom 2, or one of the open source variants. It's really really fun to play Doom CTF.

worms Armageddon - It's a turn based multiple player game that has a ton of weapons that are a lot of fun to use, and lets you use strategy and such to try to win. It's not necessarily two computer, but you can network it and play against computers.
not sure if that's exactly what you were looking for, but the learning curve is pretty easy, and it really is a lot of fun to play.

Yes, it will work.
In terms of which games to play, I'm rather uninformed myself, but I've done HALO over lan at school before. I usually to stick to starcraft, though.

As long as your sister doesn't suck at videogames, Resident Evil 5. I say this because in that game, if one player dies, both die, so it's really annoying babysitting someone the entire story.

Can't go wrong with sonic games, metal gears, or final fantasy VI, VII, or Tactics, although not sure how these will be enjoyed by each other since they're one players(except race modes in sonic[I've never played past Sonic 3 and Knuckles])
