I just finished watching r2...and I have to say...it is definitely one of the better anime I have seen, and I keep ones such as Cowboy Bebop and Suzumiya Haruhi at the top of my list.
There are SPOILERS past this point, and if you plan on watching it, I HIGHLY recommend you don't spoil yourself.
Its greatest strength is in keeping the viewer from knowing what was going to happen next...I can't seem to recall the term for this kind of dramatic tension, but this series executed it in spades. Nearly all the entertainment in battles was from seeing how the MC would win them or whatever.
The pacing and plot was thought out pretty well too. Compared to most other series out there, none of the plot twists felt too contrived (except for the Euphemia and Marianne twists), and served more like they should have: to keep me on the edge of my seat and staying up all night.
The only thing I absolutely couldn't stand about this show was the terrible music. The OP and ED songs were atrocious...like what the fuck?? I've heard better coming from my ass when I drop bombs in the bathroom. The actual soundtrack used during the show was fine, though. Not superb...but...fine.
The art style bugged me a bit as well. I'm not a fan of that exaggerated drawing style, but I got over it when I saw how relatively fluidly they animated everything. The animation was quite solid, and while clearly not the best, it was definitely above the norm. Mech designs went from ok, then to bad, then to absolutely atrocious, and never found its way back up. The whole bright colors and giant robots using kung fu on each other and shit really doesn't work for me...
Anyway...I'm a pretty cynical fucker, but this series even got me excited and shit. I think anime in general have the ability to do that to me which western dramas and such seem to lack. This is probably why I enjoy anime so much. I'm not really a nerd (I was scarred by the anime nerd subculture at my high school...ridiculous), I admit I watch a lot of shit. Taking all that into account, I have to say that the extent to which this show got me riled up and emotionally invested was surprising. I was nearly driven to movie-tears at the very end between Lelouch and Nunally (or however you spell it). Ok, I liked...my eyes did get moist.
Anyway...this wasn't the best work all things considered, but the end result was quite something. I definitely won't be forgetting about this series anytime soon, if ever...and not in a bad way like School Days, but in a good way.
EDIT Oh, and I found this amusing: + Show Spoiler +

This series was solidly 'good' R1.
R2 it fell apart when it introduced plot holes and unkillable characters as it attempted to reach some sort of proper ending, throwing proper storylines and character development out the window.
But then it went full circle and became full of absurd fabulousness.

I agree...the whole unkillable characters thing was retarded, and SERIOUSLY threw out my enjoyment of the battles in R2.
The plot holes weren't too bad, though R1 was definitely much more solid in that regard. Needless to say, R2 was still strong, and very much so compared to all the other stuff out there...which is relatively boring and unimportant.
I have no idea what you mean by your last line, though...huh? lol.

It was one of the better series I have watched, even with all the randomness in R2 (gonna geass the Jupiter! etc.) Then again I don't watch that much anime, since I prefer reading the manga equivalent of the series if there exists one (usually better with less filler shit).

Eh, the plot holes were bad but not too distracting - the really bad part was how they had at least 4 or 5 plotlines that ran around and competed for central attention. Just really annoying.
I'm surprised by how well the last ep actually tied things together.
That line is a reference to Orange-kun, my favorite character.

I consider them different...and since I sort of prefer just being able to sit back and just kinda...see/hear shit...like relax and watch something when I watch anime, I don't really get around to much manga. I'd read a lot more, though, if it weren't so damn hard to find translated scans of manga...and then among them to not have the translators shit on you from lack of motivation and disorganization and all that...
All in all, I'm just a lazy guy that would rather watch something than have to actually read it.

That line is a reference to Orange-kun, my favorite character. I just couldnt stand the second half of R2 when they went from one HUGE twist directly to another like every other episode...that was pretty bad, but still interesting. They also completely neglected some plot segments...which was retarded.
...and ah, I think I remember where that line came from.

wait wait afaik doesn't Lelouch appear on the back of the wagon on the very last episode? I really enjoyed the series aswell, considering mech isn't my thing aswell its quite and accomplishment I liked R2 better than R1 for some reason

I couldn't even force myself through the first episode. It was just too ridiculous + I couldn't care less about the premise.
|
r2 was wayyyyy better than r1 in my opinion, ending of r1 was just böring.
|
i had to force myself through the last 3 or so episodes because they were that stupid that it caused me physical pain. wayyyyyyyyyyy too many plot twists and turns that didn't make any sense or serve any purpose because the plot would swing the other way half way thru the next episode.
the last episode was nice though and actually managed to tie up the mess of a story line the previous episodes had created (or maybe thats because the plot went back and forth so many times that all the plot twists had retwisted the story back to neutrality)

A lot of people watch anime in my school. Almost everybody knows about Naruto or bleach. It's the hardcore anime fans that know about the "real" anime. I have to agree though, Code Geass is up there in my favorite anime list.
You should watch Baccano. Great opening theme.

i didnt like how they changed the somewhat-realistic ground based mech into super flying gundams
|
i didn't really care if it was good or bad. i was reading subs so i didn't have time to think if it was good or bad. anyway i thought it was good. i liked lelouch / zero's personality. he had that evil good guy thing. the music wasn't too bad either. i think it went well.

code geass was so over-the-top insane.. but that's what made it so much fun to watch
|
Season 1 was good. R2... It was good for a while, but just got ridiculous at the end. R2 is one of the few animes I've seen that was probably a legitimate troll-anime. I was also annoyed by all the seemingly abandoned plotlines that had going. Its like they got to a point in R2, and they thought "hey, wouldn't it be funny if + Show Spoiler + Lulouch's mom is still alive, and his dad isn't actually as evil as he really is (but is just a different type of evil), and then kills them both?" and then they realized "Oh shit, we gotta end this anime soon, we gotta hurry, throw together an ending!"

+ Show Spoiler +Three month wait after Euphie dies and everyone's wondering if Suzaku knows Lelouche is Zero or not
And then a 6 month or so wait for Season Two. Ridiculous.
R1's ending though, It was just like waaaaaaaaaaattttttttttt!?

Once you get used to it, though, it's really fun.

I really agree that the OP and ED songs were horrible, in both R1 and R2. Especially when you hear the ED during the last ep, it just ruins it the mood...
Another thing, ridiculously absurd endings and unkillable characters are typical of Sunrise, just see Gundam (00 has become horrible as well). It seems that Sunrise is building up a reputation of doing amazing 1st series, only to follow up with a horrible sequel series.

Season 2 was mostly trampling about in a puddle of shit, splashing it everywhere, but at least by the end gold was uncovered. That's why I hate shows like Lost which can only be described as trampling about in a bottomless puddle of shit until everyone watching gets bored and goes away.
Anyway, I thought it was pretty exciting throughout but it was the ending that made it one of my favourites. I didn't really like any characters except Lelouch and CC though. I think the most disappointing part is CC not getting to eat the giant pizza.
|
damn R2 was not horrible wtf you talking about? In a way it was very unique and had amazing feel to it if you cant get used to it then its your own opinion, im pretty bored with standard plots and enjoyed R2 thoroughly
|
Oh just to clear things up my analogy doesn't actually mean it's horrible, just very frantic/messy. I suppose it's due to all the twists.
|
I thought r2 was more amazing than the first overall. The plot was more global in scope and personal at the same time. The ending is just bad ass mastery, damn. I really liked the in show soundtrack too. Certain themes were very reflective of the scenery and catchy. Animation was fluid too. Good stuff.

Hey youtube actually featured this, apparently bandai entertainment uploaded the whole first season in order to draw in more viewers or something. Here you go, if you have never seen this anime i higghhlyy recommend it. The storyline is sick, very unpredictable! Plus the quality is HD so take advantage of it!!

!!! enjoy!!

season 1 was alright
season 2 was horrible
code gay-ass?
|
wow the end of r2 was GREAT imo so good, and i was so curious what they were going to do, couldn't have been an easy story to end lol
|
r2 had many serious issues:
bad pacing: seriously wtf, things were happening rather slowly as lelouch spends many episodes just fucking around with his school mates, making giant pizzas ect. and developing his relationship with the girls, and then suddenly shirley dies. The plot suddenly goes into overdrive, he goes to war, fights multiple battles, and things begin to revolve around his grand plan for world domination, all feelings for shirley forgotten.
giant plot holes: .... not even gonna go here
useless plot gimmicks. - Death of shirley would have been actually important if lelouch continued to express remorse of her death, or if her death changed him in any significant way. Really the only thing achieved was to free him from school life and to make the anime about giant robot battles again. They could have killed her off earlier and spared those filler episodes of r2. She should take lessons from Euphemia on "how to die with plot significance". Oh and Lelouch only has eyes for his sister anyways. - Lelouch loosing his memory at the end of r1 is another giant waste of time. Again, that doesn't serve any purpose because he just climbs back into power and continues with world domination. Not only that, it is a total cop out of the cliff hanger ending of r1. I was totally expecting something cool start off r2 with a blast, but NOOOooOoooO he just forgot everything so now you can watch him remember it all again. Its a total cop out to diffuse and rebuild lelouch and suzaku's rivalry. - Lelouch's battle with his father should have been waaaay epic. It should have been the climax. The whole anime up to that point was hyping up hatred for his dad. Instead, he dies a pussy death. No awesome battle, no action packed scenes, what a let down.
Fail Battle Strategy: - HOW MANY TIMES DOES LELOUCH HAVE TO BLOW UP THE FLOOR YOU'RE STANDING ON BEFORE YOU LEARN? Really, his so called "tactical genius" revolves around two tricks: blowing up the floor/platform/oceanbed and predicting your video responses. I thought they would continue to wow my mind with awesome strategy, but nope, sorry, hes just a two trick pony. If you want to see some actual clever strategy, go watch gundam 00.
Yes, R2's ending is probably the only redeeming point. Lelouch is destined to be martyred in the first place, he has committed too many sins on his path to victory, so the end is fitting.
/end rant

well season 1 was really exceptional and it's pretty hard to top that. the ending was fantastic and made up for all the things you pointed out in my opinion. the pizza episode was kinda stupid.
|
Lelouch is alive here is gif of uncut episode
Since I'm already posting pics
|
The coke image there is great.
|
HOLY SHIT COKE ORANGE?!
oh and lelouch is dead, etc. I'd type more but i choked on my saliva and lost my chain of thought.
|
hahaha "Divided by Zero"
IMO this was the best part of R2:
![[image loading]](http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/darksentenal/1220329409434.gif) GO EMPEROCKET

I just finished it, and I thought it was very, very great. I went into it looking for a second Death Note, but it turned out very different... not so much a constant battle of two geniuses, but a battle of a genius against overwhelming force.
I had a couple of problems with it but overall thought R1 and R2 were both great. Actually Im kinda mad they didnt show what happens to Xing-ke, I thought he was a cool character.
I really, really, REALLY expected Zero Requiem to have something to do with people returning to life like Marianne mentioned. It would make sense with everything: Suzaku turned into a heartless killer because he knows that everyone would come back, including Euphemia, Lelouche would agree to oppose and even kill Nunally because he knows she would come back to life, Shirley would return to life and fufill her dying words of being reborn again and falling in love with him, Lelouche's out of character quote about filling rivers with blood would make sense because they would come back to life, etc. Basically I expected Zero Requiem to be some variant of the Ragnarok thing Charles and Marianne were working on that would revert the world to a previous point in time or something.
