SC2 is coming up and for some reason I feel it will be the total and permanent replacement of our beloved broodwar. It is looking like a really awesome game and will pretty much have a lot of potential in its competitive aspect.

When I started out playing StarCraft, I did it because I wanted to be serious about it and have been ever since. It's been a little more than a year since then and I can say that it has been truly worth it, and a really fun experience as well.

But for some reason I just feel that when I switch to StarCraft 2, I will be a complete and stupid noob at it, that all the time I spent on playing broodwar was just a waste of time and since we're all going to be starting the race to the top on the same line, I pressure myself a lot because of it (because I want to achieve something, or at least be good at it).

It's driving me crazy! But the worst part is the following: I consider myself too old to start all over again =[ I'm 19 years old and the gaming scene seems to be getting owned by younger people nowadays.

I just don't know what I'm going to do, I don't know if it'll be really worth it to switch to SC2, what if it becomes like WC3 and I get trapped inside that world? Sigh.

Just play Sc2 as a semi casual.

I know some people who don't really take bw seriously ( mostly playing 3v3 or UMS but they are/could be quite decent ).
You don't need uber mega training to become good. It will just take more time. And who needs to be super gosu anyway ?
The most important thing is to have fun.

You can have more fun at D level than at B, skill doesn't really matter.
fuck all those elitists brb watching streams of elite players.

I was thinking just like you a few months ago, but then I came to the conclusion that I don't care! I'll just play and get better because playing is what I want, but if SC2 will be the better game, sure I'll mass game it, but if BW continues I will be gosu at it (at least compared to if I didn't play at all until SC2 was released)

And who needs to be super gosu anyway ?

I'm pretty competitive, that's what drives me to play really (1v1 that is). I want to become better, defeat opponents and just win goddamit

EDIT: Raptor are u in school? Because you're not on msn

I took BW pretty seriously for a while as well, tried my hardest in every game and pushed myself for months at a time. The coming of SC2 upsets me because I will not be getting it, nor would it work on my computer. I'm sure I would get used to the new aspects of the game and adapt like most of us BW players would, and would have a mechanical edge over the total newbies that start the game. However I just want to hold on to the game as it is now - ICCup, TL.net, Korean proscene, my friends that I play with, the people I have yet to play with, SC:BW tournaments at my college... It will all be drastically changed when SC2 comes out. I am also 19 and I know that with college, work, and a girlfriend, I will never be able to devote the consecutive hours I did for BW to improve. That's when you approach a hard fact of life - it's time to move on and let some things go. This is true for me, but only you can decide which way to go. My suggestion would be to gauge how badly you want to immerse yourself in the upcoming SC2 scene (although trying the game first might help, as well as seeing the community response), and then embrace that decision. I chose to deny SC2. You can choose to be semi-casual (although the contrast might be frustrating). You can choose to try hard again. It's all about what you want and what you have time for.

Good luck and have fun.
Peace~

whats going to be funny is that everyone on TL will be in the top half(eighth!?) of the ladder (unless the koreans are part of the same ladder system) for SC2 within a week.

I hate new games and I hate new technology. Having to learn something new when the old worked so well feels like a homework assignment. Especially when you spend years getting good at something and the new version just erases all that work.

I wouldn't worry too much. Of course the game will be different, but I think that a lot of your skills will be translatable from one game to another.

I don't know a lot about SC2, but scouting, macro, micro, multitasking, harassment etc etc will probably still be important, and you should have a good chance at being good at that. Learning strategies and BO:s will come over time, just like it does in BW.

Then keep playing BroodWar, if you don't want to ditch it.

Being good at BW will immediately make you better at SC2, giving you a leg up on all the RTS noobs who will start playing when it hits.

I'm inspired by you to learn how to use MS paint better.

The only thing I can use it for is to resize images to use in PL threads.

Exactly. I'm looking forward to SC2 for this reason. Right now the standard of SC is so high that it's hard to get wins if you're a casual player like me who started late.
There's going to be plenty of complete noobs to stomp when SC2 comes out though and it's going to be fun being part of the evolution of the strategy rather than coming into a game that was already pretty much mapped out.

Just take refuge in the fact that Blizzard takes forever and ever and ever to get their games out. You probably have a good year and a half at the very least to enjoy BW.
