Here we are at the height of the Christmas Season. Snow is falling (if you're in the northern hemisphere, anyway), school's out (if you're in university), and finals are done (unless you are tragically scheduled). In my European history final, I had an interesting question. I had to know out of Britain, Germany, Italy, and Russia which wasn't in the EU. The answer, of course, is Russia. How did I know this? BRAT_OK. As most TL lurkers and posters probably know, BRAT_OK is an awesome Russian Terran player who was denied entry to the WCG Finals in Germany.
Now considering that all EU member states allow free passage between eachother, and BRAT_OK couldn't get into Germany because of passport/visa issues, it wasn't hard to figure out that was the country not in the EU. So as asinine as the WCG issue seemed, there was something to be learned, and an extra mark on a test to be gotten. Hopefully next WCG, or any foreign scene tournament won't see those problems.

Haha, SC helped in school!
That's a good sign to continue playing SC

Hehe, and people say gaming is bad for you . Still though, everyone should know Russia isn't in EU.

This.
Although, puzzling it out from starcraft is pretty sweet none-the-less.

Nice, wish it could help me on my math test though.

That's a pretty easy question anyways. Obviously Germany, Italy, and Britain are in the EU. The question could of at least thrown in some obscure countries to make it not so obvious.

I think Britain was the obscure country, as it isn't in the common market. Also, we learned about the EU through its various stages, such as the ECSC and the EEC, either of which may not have included all potential answers. Also, I could be wrong about Germany and Italy. I don't remember if those were potentials or if it was a different, more obscure country, but it was central Europe for certain. I'm only absolutely certain of Russia and Britain.

Yeah but either way you should derive out of historical context that Russia would NEVER take part in a thing such as the EU

I did think of that, and was pretty sure it was Russia to begin with, but the BRAT_OK thing made me 100% certain.

you would fail in european finals, because we don´t use multiple choice

haha learning life's lessons from games. This reminds me of a time I had to take some vocab test in middle school and the word was "vitality." Good thing I knew how to spell it since "vitality" was a stat in Diablo 2 :D

I would have been between England and Russia. Since I know they both don't use the euro. At least would have guess Russia right since many ex. USSR country are trying to get in the EU and Russia isn't even in Europe. But hell I'm fine with letting starcraft take the credit for your success. I also passed my macroeconomics class cause I knew a 12 hatch is better then communism.

We had a Bio test, and we had to name the protective shell that most insects have or another. My friend got it right when guessing Chitinous (or something like that) because the Ultralisk +2 upgrade is called Chitinous armor. Lulz

I knew what "avarice" meant on a vocab test because of Diablo 1. The word was used in one of the shrine messages.
And yeah, Russia isn't even in Europe.

1/3 of Russia IS in Europe, Jesus... Russia is both european and an asian country. In fact maybe around 1/3 of Europe belongs to Russia. Russia's got more european teritory than any other country in Europe. How is this not an european country?
Look here.
As for the question which country isn't in EU... Wow, can they make it more easier somehow? Only if they replaced Russia wits the US. You watch 5 minutes of news and you will hear about Russia and EU bitching about some gas issue or Georgia or whatever.
I mean... There are maybe 4 or 5 countries and organizatiions in the world for which you just have to know the basic stuff, US, EU, Russia, China I guess. Need to know where they are at least and some very basic knowledge about how they are governed. That shouldn't be in a university test, that's a question for... I don't know - 9 year olds maybe?
That's like asking me which is not a part of the United states - Texas, Florida, California or Mexico? Totally retarded... Wow...

The thing is that EU is not a coalition of all the states in Europe, for example Norway is not in the EU even though they are in Europe geograficaly.

I'm not so sure you should be happy that you knew this through that context

Excuse me for having an easy history final. Also, being in Canada means I get little news on goings on in Europe, and televised news wouldn't tell me anything anyway. Especially since I'm in BC (as far west as you can go) so there's far more news about East Asia(esp. China) than Europe.
I can understand why you might be annoyed, being that you are pretty close to Russia and were part of the USSR, now part of the EU.
