Hello, hello. I dont really know why i'm making this blog, but I'm just going to list some of the songs that I really think a lot of the others can enjoy.
Usually, rap is best in english; and between korea and usa, i prefer korea's rap, perhaps because i understand both korean and english. I'd translate all these songs that I'm going to list, because they do have great lyrics if you can understand them. But I'm not THAT good at korean, and plus it'd be really hard x_x
So i'm basically saying, it might sound pretty much horrible to any others, but do give it a listen ;D
First song: Soul Connection - 새벽아래 (Under the Dawn) One of my favourites by far, it really is a good song. the beat is nice, the lyrics are really great, and the three rappers involved in it are very very talented.
Second song: E-Sens ft Simon Dominic, Minos - I'm no good E-Sens, Simon Dominic, Minos. I consider them probably in the top 10 of korea's rappers that I really think sound great. They are amazing; flow, rhymes, blah blah. This song is based off Winehouse's song; and it sounds great =D
Third song: Kinetic Flow - 몽환의 숲 (Forest of Dreams) Kinetic Flow is my favourite group without a doubt. This is my favourite song. Top 3 easy~
Just listen, if you enjoyed the songs above.
Three songs that i really think are great. I dunno, if people like it, i'd post more of these blogs because I really think korea's rap scene is good.
Korean hiphop is generally better than English hiphop for me due to the heavy use of strings and piano and generally lyrics that are deeper than pimping and killing rival gang members
Kflow is my favorite korean group, along with MC Sniper, Epik High, and CB Mass

I like American hiphop better cause it's not like Korean hiphop, full of random asians trying to be gangster and rapping about kimchi or some shit.

Lol shallow generalizations.
Except what I said is true, you fucking retard. I listen to plenty of American underground hiphop. My generalizations about mainstream american rap are true. What do you want me to do, fucking specifically list all the fucking names I can think of to make myself seem "legit" for some fag online?

lol you do realize that there are gangsters to every race? and street fighting is a lot more common in korea than it is in America, alot of black+white kids when I grew up in america just talked big, dressed gangster and couldn't fight. And rapping about kimchi? you're a douche, i have never heard a korean rap about kimchi
No, but I rather dislike people using the easy argument that American hiphop is bad or worse than other music by just focusing on mainstream rap trends. Ok, your statement is legitimate with regards to mainstream hiphop. It still ignores the vast group of rap artists who use softer, instrumental beats and meaningful lyrics. Name all the rappers you listen to you want, you generalized American hiphop into a phrase that is simply unfair.
Now I enjoy these 3 songs that have been posted up, so don't think I have anything at all against Korean hiphop, but I am just fed up with all these repetitive and broad attacks on American hiphop.

That's great. I was being sarcastic.
EDIT: I guess if people don't get it, I was responding to such a broad and inaccurate generalization with an equally stupid one of my own.

a better analogy would be someone preferring american pop over korean pop because korean pop music is stupid because all of them are about love. (which i strongly disagree with)

the problem with your response is that your statement was completely untrue. name me one song that a rapper/rap group/hip hop group raps about kimchi. it was just totally random and uncalled for. on the other hand a lot, though not all, of american hip hop is about sex and other junk.

rofl. American rap is fucking horrible. Soulja Boy? Young Jeezy? Young Joc? go fuck themselves.
Unless we're talking about the underground scene, with Celph Titled, AOTP, Move.meant, Lowkey, etc etc etc
lol korean rap is arite but then again all rap always talks about similar shit anyways american rap tends to talk about sex girls drugs politics thats just the way it is i dont know what koreans talk about cause i dont understand it but that guy saying its about kimchi...ROFL first of all hes ignorant and second...no one raps about food =D! i notice a lot of asian bands rappers though do rap about love and girls leaving them, getting a girl, something about loving which gets old.
soulja boy, jeezy, joc, wayne, bird, blah they all suck but im pretty sure there are a hand of bad famous rappers everywhere

Don't be so quick to make generalizations about hip-hop, it's a very eclectic and creative genre. People who say Rap/Hip Hop only talks about [gangs/drugs/girls etc] are as annoying as people who say metal is just people screaming. That is not to say there aren't good songs that explore these topics...
Regardless, I liked a lot of the Korean Hip-Hop in this thread, I just wish I could understand more lyrics than I did.

wait what?
I listen to hip hop. I know what's good and what's bad. I said good rap doesn't talk about sex, girls, or drugs (not like the main concept). I'm confused. I thought the quote you quoted about me says "good rap doesn't talk about sex/drugs/girls" o_o and yoo said that "people who say rap/hip hop only talks about [gangs/drugs] etc etc"
I don't see the need for the big fight here; American rap is also pretty great. I forgot who created the blog, but he introduced me to CunninLynguists and Cyne and Brother Ali and what not. Since then, I haven't stopped listening to them. I also think they are really good, just thought I'd post some random korean songs that I do think are also worth a gander =D
Basically, mainstream rap is not that good..
epik high got better recently, but I still dont like them as much. PS: Yeah, Garion and Primary Skool are sooooooo good. Meta and 나찰 = awesome =D some more songs I though people'd enjoy
동전한닢 Remix ft frigging 31 MCs. Some of the greatest are in this song; Garion, E-Sens, Simon Dominic, Palo Alto, Quiett, FANA (or hwana whatever you prefer xD), IGNITO Great song~
배치기 - Unfade from a couple of years back, this was one of those mainstream songs that I do think is good ;D It's basically a ballad and rap combined together, and i really like the melody.
Outsider - 연인과의 거리 korea's fastest rapper. this is his first song that i listened to, and i immediately downloaded all his songs. very good overall!
I'm simply saying that many people pigeon hole hip-hop, and that you shouldn't suggest that no good rap speaks of girls/gangs/drugs. Moreover, I didn't post it for your benefit, as you seem to have fine taste if I may judge.
Jesus Christ how can anyone even think that Korean Hip Hop is remotely close to the level of Hip Hop in the United States. Soulja Boy and Little Wayne are a thousand times better than any Korean Hip Hop I have ever heard, and I hate both of them. Despite my hatred for them they utilize the current popular styles of Hip Hop to A) Make them money and B) Make chicks ass' shake. Besides that the music is what Hip Hop is right now.
I am a big Hip Hop fan and I have probably listened to alot more than most of the people here at TL.net. I see alot of you using the same old stereotypes like "Rappers only rap about chicks, cars and drugs". Thats just fucking retarded, thats like saying pop songs shouldn't be about love or girls/boys. Sex, Drugs and Cars is what speaks to alot of the people that Hip Hop is meant to, and despite everyone thinking that makes Hip Hop shallow it doesn't. It is the median of the genre not the definition of it, its where the fans that dont pay attention are.
I cant believe anyone would even try to argue that Korean Hip Hop is better than American Hip Hop. The difference between Korea and America in this case is bigger than the skill gap between Best and Nony.... no im not joking either. Hip Hop was created here and there will never be anyone who can surpass the rappers who lived here or are living right now. Tupac. Biggie. Dr. Dre. Ice Cube. MC Ren. Tha Alkaholiks. Hiero. De La Soul. Need I continue?
With that being said two of my favorite artists right now are Japanese, Nujabes and Tsutchie. Just because America is the king of Hip Hop doesnt mean that rap from other countries isnt good, it just means that you are learning from us :D I enjoyed the first track in the OP thought he other ones didnt really speak to me that much.
Firstly, I agree with your entire post as a whole. However:
Soulja Boy and Little Wayne are not hip-hop, and their music is garbage. They are pop singers.
Also, where do you find/ do you listen to new hip hop?, because aside from Soulja boy, Wayne, and possibly the 2 Japanese artists, all those acts are at least fifteen years old.
there are plenty of good korean rappers out there, just not enough attention paloalto the quiett loptomist plastik mic e-sens simon dominic the list goes on~
Who can decide what is better? I just listen to whatever I think is good, even if it's commercial music that is generally considered to be shit just cause a lot of other people listen to it.
I just find these music discussions pretty funny, aren't you supposed to listen to music because you enjoy it? Why do you then have to argue about which one is better, does it make your music sound more awesome if you get that other guy to change his mind? He obviously won't change his mind since taste is a thing that goes deeper than two pages of discussion in a thread.
Why I like korean hip-hop is because the underground scene has an awesome old-school sound and the language works great for rapping imo. My only gripe with is is that I can't understand the lyrics and as such I lose one pretty important factor from the songs.

I suppose that if you think there is nothing artistic about music than an argument in quality does sound pretty funny...
But forgetting all other genre's, hip-hop forgoes singing for lyricism, and thus I treat it as poetry foremost. I can't understand how people can listen to rappers that sound like they have but a second grade education.
Instrumentals don't exactly take the backseat however. As hip-hop's musical quality stems from the artists voice and flow, as well as the beat itself, these variables separate the best from the mediocre.

I dont like Soulja Boy really, but Lil Wayne is probably one of the best producers right now. His songs arent the best but his beats are fucking awesome and he does what the public wants well. If you havent heard some of Lil Waynes mix tapes then you cant really judge him because he does shit for the radio and then he does shit for his mix tapes. Im not a huge Lil Wayne fan but I would rather listen to him than anything in the OP of this thread.

Dynamic Duo - Gone their mv's are known for their hilarity and randomness but their rap is great
Double K - Nu school just cause i cant find his video/song for 너가 날 떠나면 안되는이유_(feat_정표)
and epik high has been continually getting worse since their album that had 'fly' in it im so disappointed by them lately that i dont even bother downloading or listening to their newest songs

No, but you're just one of those people who listens to music PURELY for the musical perspective, and there's a whole set of other people who really like lyrics. I myself am kind of in the middle.
For some people, shit lyrics = shit song. I agree with that.
Its true that I listen to music which is in a language I dont understand purely from a musical perspective, I fail to see how I can look at it any other way besides learning the language or looking up the lyrics to every song and memorizing them.

Learn language, find and read an English translation or don't make this kind of comment. Rap isn't all bout the flow or the beat.

T-T
Thats not what I said at all. I never even said the music was crap because of the language... I said I did not like it, thats my opinion. There is very little music I would call crap, without a doubt Bon Jovi is one of those but I didnt ever say this music was crap. In fact I said I liked the first track...
What I said was I am not going to learn a bunch of languages in order to understand music which I already enjoy just fine. I see no problem in liking the style and rap of a person who I cannot understand at all. I listen to music in quite a few languages and enjoy it without knowing what they are saying. You didnt even quote my original post >.< Did you read it?
Your an idiot. So I can't enjoy opera in Italian? I cant enjoy a Beatles song sung in french? I am sorry but what the hell dude music is about sound yes the content of the lyrics is important but lyrics are just poetry without music.

Rap is mostly about lyrics... it isn't rock or electro. It is like saying that a book or a film is bad just because you can't understand. Thank you for calling me an idiot.
I would never listen rap if i couldnt understand the meaning of the lyrics.

Then you have no appreciation for a good beat... Why would you listen to rap if you dont enjoy a good beat? Rap isnt about lyrics. That may be your opinion but you should really look into where rap came from and what its about. One is no good without the other in the world of Hip Hop and you cant have lyrics without a beat and have it be a good song. Likewise you cant have a good beat and no lyrics and have it be a full song. Though I do enjoy instrumental hip hop.
Your welcome, thanks for saying the same about me :D
What makes a good rap song is not only good instrumentals, but good lyrics.
Good beats don't mean shit when you're blabbing shit about bitches, cars, hoes. Rap is truly at its finest when the lyrics actually mean something, and it also has good beats...
I think that there has to be a very fine balance of the two because both are equally important to a successful song. But I also think that I can enjoy a piece of music without understanding the language, though it isn't the same type of joy as someone who takes something away from the content of the lyrics.

Quit insulting me for my musical opinion jesus fucking christ. I LIKE IT MORE! GO SHOOT YOURSELF NOW PLZ! You must realize by now this argument will never go anywhere because we are both set on our particular opinions. I still stand by the fact that I dont need to understand lyrics to enjoy music. I dont even understand half of what Lil Wayne says for the love of God, fuck I couldnt even understand Zach De La Rocha live half the time, didnt ruin my fun at all.
that fact is derived from the internet aspect of you because i can't access the real life you, but i'll happily apply that generalization to the entire you.
it's obviously not just about korean songs. it's about how you're so adamant in your superficial glance being superior to any opinions that consider so many more aspects of the subject than you do. and yes, some opinions are better than others, and i'd rather stand behind someone who can understand both english and korean lyrics than someone who can only understand one. (although i do admit the glaring ignorance from some of the posters on american rap or hip-hop is -_-;;;; )
Well my entire point was that I can enjoy a song without understanding the language. My judgment was based upon those aspects of the song which I can understand and I actually said I enjoyed the song at first, which was immediately followed by a storm of people saying I couldnt form an opinion without understanding the language. I never said my opinion was superior to others, in fact I think it was quite the opposite as most of the posts insulting me said there was no way to enjoy music without understanding the language.
This thread was made for English speakers to broaden their horizons and learn about Korean rap. Thus, the target audience is like SpiralArchitect states, where they can only enjoy Korean hiphop because of its beats. Now all you Korean speakers suddenly busting in this thread and saying that we're all ignorant for not caring about the Korean songs' lyricism, well screw you. Just because you can understand the lyrics doesn't mean that we have to in order to pass judgement on whether we like the song or not.
Beat is very important in rap. When people casually listen to a rap song, the first thing they notice is the beat. It lays the foundation for the whole entire song's success. That is why there are so many critically acclaimed producers and DJs in the hiphop scene. It isn't just about the lyrics, and if you want pure rap poetry listen to Saul Williams. Otherwise, listen to these Korean songs that have been posted and consider that most of the enjoyment you get out of it is from the beat and flow.

That was really rude. The argument started here. You have somewhat clarified the situation so we cant top here. But next time don't make statements like this. Say "in my opinion"...
My language was rather coarse I agree. But the basic idea of that post has nothing to do with what you tried to say I was being ignorant about. Thank you for citing on paragraph of a four paragraph post, taking only my opinion and not any of the facts I used to back it up. Besides the first sentence still rings true, how could anyone even think that? Thats like saying Euro leagues compare to the NBA.

Jesus i can't stand it anymore. Why are you THINKING THAT YOUR OWN OPINION IS BETTER WHEN YOU CAN'T EVEN UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ?? AND WHY WE HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU ??? ONLY BECAUSE OF THE BEAT ? BECAUSE THEY ARE BLACK AND NOT ASIAN ? BECAUSE RAP STARTED IN THE US ?
Soulja boy better ? No thanks. I have the right to disagree ?
With the same kind of stupid statements i can say that all the American writers, or painters are utter crap because " HEY LULZ EUROPEAN PEOPLE STARTED IT AND I DON'T REALLY UNDERSTAND ENGLISH LolOLOL".
You want me to name Z- class French soccer players and say that they are better than any American soccer player just because soccer is more popular here and because indeed our A team seems stronger ?

/ignore you are so ignorant, rude and arrogant.
You are doing the exact same thing to me, I stated my opinion of the music which you then proceeded to flame me for because I said I judged it without understanding the language. I never said that my opinion is better than yours I merely said I have the right to enjoy music without understanding the language, and you shouldnt be all up on my ass about it. You came into this ball game at half time and started flaming me off a reply I made to clazzi. I really dont see anywhere that I said your opinion sucks or that mine is better even, I really dont think you should be berating me for enjoying music.
The first thing you got all hot and bothered about was me calling the music crap because of the language, I never did that. Then you got all pissed because I said I can enjoy music just fine without understanding the lyrics, my opinion not yours. You then proceeded to FORCE your opinion on my stating that I was ignorant for not learning the lyrics of songs I enjoy. I fail to see where you get off telling me I dont enjoy music that I clearly do.
You came into this whole thing without any idea of what my original post was stating or what it even meant. You took one statement which you found particularly offensive for some reason and took it to the level of flaming me for it. If anyone has forced their opinion, or thinks theirs is superior than another, it is you. God sometimes I really hate the French.
i agree some of waynes beats are pretty good and the souljah boi ones are kinda catchy but what ruins it is the lyrics or subject they rap about (and i fucking hate waynes raspy voice)
imo, id rather listen to the korean songs and not know wtf they are raping abt than listen to the mainstream US stuff abt gangs money and girls.
beat wise i think the korean songs posted here and wayne's beats are kinda equal but one is better than the other depending on the mood ure in
but the lyrics just plain makes it shit
thus posted korean rap posted here>wayne/souljah boi
Opinions opinions, opinions are like assholes...everyone's gotta have one!
The original 3 songs are aight! I definitely appreciate the post for helping me expand my mind about korean hip hop.
Korean rap better than American rap! That won't happen in our life times. But then again..Our president is Black!
Korean hip hop is nice to listen to for this one reason....every word can be 1 syllable. You can do alot with the word play. But realisticaly...most of the music is borrowed from american hip hop. Society in korea at the moment won't allow korean lyrics to be deeper than american hiphop. That's just not possible. I could get into this but I wont... If you can really understand both cultures to a point where you can compare and contrast them both...You would understand that socially speaking, Koreans aren'tas open minded and exposed to enough ideas as we are in america. I will say this tho...Korean hip hop with everything else koreans try hard to do, have vastly improved in such a short amount of time. Who knows what 10 years may bring.
