I just found out from some guy in Maintenance Department that 15% of the Machine Operators are going to be layed off in 2 weeks. He is an electrician with the lowest seniority and was already told today at work that in 2 weeks that he wouldn't be needed. He told me they say its for 3 months or so but he thinks it is for 6 months.
I work for a company called P&F Tool and Die which is Part of Magna and we make parts for GM/Ford/Chrysler....well you can tell how this is going to go...
Anyways, how does this concern me? Well, My employee # is 743 and I got hired November, 2006 and a guy in my department who I eat lunch with and talk to is #694 and there wasn't a lot of people who got hired after me. Maybe 20 people. I heard they going to lay off about 30 people or something like that.
There is a chance that I just barely manage to stay but it also depends on how they do this. If its 15% per department like 15% 180 & 15% North Welding & 15% South Welding and finally 15% Stamping then I would be layed off for sure because there is about 15 people in North Plant during afternoons and most of them have been here 10 years with me being here 2 years and Nick being here 2 years and 2 months. If its 15% of all Welding then things could be different. I don't know
I'm glad I have IE [un-employment insurance] that they take from me every month so I would still get 60% of my pay for about 6 months or so. I could spend that time catching up in school work and playing more SC lol.
One thing I don't like about my work is that if they know who is going to get layed off now then why they wait to tell people.
Also, I was going to go 1 month vacation in Dec-Jan but if I am getting layed off then I will cancel that and save what money I have.

I doubt they would just lay people off based on your employee number. Especially considering you've been there 2 years. All you can really do is make sure you're doing a better job then the next guy. Suck up to the bosses for a bit and hope for the best.

well if your employee number has something to do with how long youve been there, it would be logical to lay of people based on employee number

Seniority is everything.

Yeah brother, that's the way it works. It doesn't really matter if your slightly better than Person A or B, if you have been there the shortest amount of time, your usually the first to go; unless your in a much needed position. Good luck Yaqoob, at least your insurance will cover you.
I don't want to be a complete downer, but if they are cutting jobs now for awhile, I think you should start looking for another job. Things aren't getting any better for plants like this (especially with a lot of talk about GM going bankrupt & their need for some financial assistance) so your job is always in jeopardy; that's what sucks. If you do get laid off, you should spend the majority of your time on school so you can switch to the job you really want to do ASAP.

Start looking for another job anyway so you won't be sorry if you are indeed laid off. You should always be on the hunt regardless.

Not just GM, people are getting laid off every where. The recession started since this April or earlier then picked up about June. I didn't even find a job after my 3rd year in university ended. The first place I went to, they told me they were actually laying off people. I went to several job agencies, Tim Hortons, Food Basics, Winners, Beer store, Walmart etc... none of them were hiring.
The best option for you right now to start looking for another job, don't be stupid and bet on your chances. Always plan ahead, because right now the way economy is going, I am not sure if I can find a job after I get my BSc; I applied to Canadian government public service jobs, wrote their exams and I don't get to know the results until Sept 1st of 2009. What if I don't get the job by then? That is why I applied to teacher's college just in case; at least I'll have a decent income for life if I get in. And I am not stupid enough to wait for 4 months after I graduate and only to find out I got reject by their fuckers in the government and missed my chance at teachers college..

I would say that it is not only these companies that work this way, but companies in general tend to follow the "last in, first out" rule.
Recession is hitting hard everywhere, especially manufacturing sector as people will be consuming less as of now. Good thing you have that insurance thing.
What makes me most angry about this whole recession predicament is that it has worldwide implications; I am across the globe from the US, and even here it has an impact.

They just laid off a bunch of people at my work yesterday. Ever since I was hired 2 yrs ago they just started letting people go. Some of the people were here 6 years, or 12 years, but others were here for less time than me. Just do your job well and you may be ok.

I'm still at uni so I don't have a job yet, but my dad's company fired 10% of its workers a short while ago. It's a big international bank so that's expected I guess.

The auto industry is so shitty now it's not even funny - Which explains why my state (Michigan) has the worst economy in the nation right now. Sorry to hear that you may get laid off - especially despite the 25 billion dollar bailout that's going the auto industry's way.
A similar company called Donnelly which is located near me (and was oddly enough purchased by Magna a couple years back) has also laid off a lot of people lately, including a few people that I know that work there.
Sucky. But at least you get 6 months unemployment to find another job! I wish the best of luck to you!

Ugh the layoffs begin ...
Hope you don't get laid off, begin looking for other jobs like other people are saying.

To reply to the people about work good and stuff like that. My work is not unionized and very unfair. Certain people follow certain rules. I am not allow to listen to an I-Pod cause its against the rules as my supervisor says but they are allowed to smoke in the plant and other employee's who have been here 10-20 years can smoke and whatever even though they know its against the rules to smoke unless its break time and only in specific areas.
Then everyday before work they talk about 'Safety First' and that is a complete Joke. Basically all the Supervisors and Lead Hands are Vietnamese (nothing against that race) so if your from Vietnam then you can do what you want, smoke when you want and what not. If you not then Supervisor on your back.
I also love how I am 99% sure my work knows now who they are going to lay off and when but still hasn't told anyone cause they love to tell things last minute cause as long as they have their jobs in the office then they don't care.
They want to do it in December because then they don't have to pay 5-6 Days Holiday Pay and Christmas Bonus. It saves them about $1500 per person. Such a nice holiday present.

wow your company is s a faggel. If i could help you right now i would, come live with me, we can be SC partneres and move to korea and restart hexatron...
PS: But even though some are seniors don't they get paid more? so if the seniors got laid off the company don't have to pay so much to them anymore...

Yeah Yaqoob I've thought about you every time I heard about GM in the news recently. I hope things work out for you in one way or another.
I'm lucky my interests aligned with public service because that's one of the only areas that are remaining reasonably secure.
