I'm no where near where I expected to be, and I wanted to spend my summer in Korea going to pro games, etc... I figured I needed $12k so I got 2 jobs, and started playing poker. Made up to $9k and put it into the bank.

I hope to some day go to Korea, but as a pro gamer? not anymore. I figured out I'd rather go with the flow, get a college education, and do a semester abroad in Korea or something which I still can do.

Good job coming to your senses.

:O Good luck with your dreams. Don't forget to enjoy childhood, though! It's the only time in your life when it's socially acceptable to be completely dependant, while spending almost all your time on your own interests; cherish that.

How did you feel about turning 18? Did you have any dreams that you was looking forward to?

Basically the only difference was that for all the years I've been staying out of trouble, now I know that if I do get in trouble it'll be much worse. The closer you get to 18, the more you realise you don't really want to take on the responsibilities that come with adulthood, and that it's going to be awhile before you're completely independent. It's sort of like living in a limbo of semi-dependency looking toward a dim future if you don't get really lucky. My dream is to write professionally, but I might as well want to be a rock star or progamer. Natural ability is secondary to luck and fate in the world I live in.

That said, there are privileges to adulthood you'll finally get to enjoy... Watching any movie you want, drinking (well that actually stops being fun after a short while), and if you're an attractive human being, maybe marriage and some kids one day. People will probably patronize you less, but you'll feel worse when they do.

I feel like dreams don't come true until much later in life... I'm on this sort of tightrope where either the cord is gonna snap and everything's gonna go to shit, or I'm gonna pull a miracle and make it to the other side, where I won't have to be so worried constantly.

i thought it was just a period of ignorance and bliss; thus giving advice like that is completely absurd to us children.

while spending almost all your time on your own interests

as opposed to not doing that later on?
;edit; on second thought... im not sure i want to know D:

as opposed to not doing that later on?

Later on, you'll have a lot less free time. Work, active citizenship, and errands will suck the life out of you to the point that it takes a very strong person to still actively pursue their hobbies instead of just wanting to go to sleep.

It doesn't hurt to try.

Experience is great, traveling around gives you a new perspective, especially if its a foreign country. However if your serious about anything involving e-sports, you have to take into consideration your own benchmark for your own ability and not disillusion yourself. People develop differently, some pick up and get incredibly good fast (Flash) or others take quite some time to break out(Much), so the variability is quite stark. Also many talented pro-gamers who I think are better than most of the 3rd-rate crap that goes on proleague never break out either cause of bad luck in the prelims or simply because there are too many of that particular race on the team to pick out with. Savior, in his prime for example, could not qualify for the OSL for a very long time even during his reign.

Even if you don't succeed, remember the journey is more important than the end, take with you whatever you gained and develop it, take expectations and dreams one day at a time. But you have to ask yourself, how much do you want it, how much are you willing to sacrifice, and that's where the line is drawn.

O and for the 18 question, it pretty much sucked for me.
Didn't get anything I wanted, lost quite a few things in the process of attempting, but I'm still a young individual with potential.

No use in lamenting on past mistakes though, makes me motivated not to fuck up anymore. I suppose other people have it worse out there, and that gives me some solace in that thought.

QuietIdiot, I don't think he necessarily means to become a progamer... I think he just wants to be involved with the industry, which is not disillusioned at all. There are plenty of work opportunities that the industry creates. The pretty logos, translations, and camera work are all realistic possibilities for anyone who isn't necessarily an S-Class human being, but just wants to be involved with the industry they love.

Yeah I must've skipped reading a sentence, simply working in the industry sounds like a fun plan, would still be hard for a foreigner though, since most of the suitability and convenience would simply be from Koreans. Maybe GSI will become big enough to encase more opportunities outside, sc2gg could be cool.

You can still work in the e-sports industry and go to school, you know. Or he can finish his studies in Korea at a super awesome university (I got rejected from Korea University, like 3rd best in the country ;_;) and then go into the e-sports industry.

I think it would be awesome to have a non-Korean commentator speaking in Korean hahaha

Not to discourage you but thats not likely to happen. Its a huge investment with little chance of success if you ask me.

ye you either have to already be a wellknown progamer or have videos on youtube to show as your resume and to show you have knowledge and experience in the game. no one wants a boring amateur talking about what the players are doing. people want those sports commentators like in ESPN where they're talking about their strategies and how the players trained for their matches, and so forth.

When I turned 18, all my friend turned 21.

It made me feel empty... I'll always be the one behind )=!

Instead of going balls out to Korea, maybe consider college with study abroad programs associated with Korea.

Just as a short anecdote... I received certification as an EMT in order to see if I wanted to continue the path to a physician or lab work later in my life. What being an EMT taught me is how screwed up payment for the medical system is and as such I'm going to stick to lab work instead of stressing out whether my patients will be in debt for the rest or their lives.

It might be a good looking cake, but it could taste like shit.

Hey OP - esports here is all about who you know and what you can offer to the industry. I think before anything, you should go to school in your own country and do a semester in Korea or something. Go to the games, hang out with peope involved in esports and see how you like it. I don't recommend coming out here as a progamer - at all. Do things as you normally would do, and make Korea a nice interlude to your life - and once you get here and decide then that you love it, you can make a job of it, you can DO something ... THEN make the plunge and move.

Oh yeah and don't thnk that you're gonna get an English teaching job to hold you over. You'll need a college degree for that.

When I was about to turn 18 I couldnt wait to buy a car because my girlfriend lived about 50 km from me.

Now I am 24 and she is still my gf so the car was a good investment I´d say

EDIT: And I still play StarCraft. As you can see, when you are 18, nothing changes anymore :D or should I be sad about it?... Think I should just watch MSL now....

Thanks alot of all the answers, sad tho that this blog entry got more posts than my first blog entry about Boxer.

I want to work with E-sports, not as commentator, just doing something to help the industry and be invloved in it. That is what I want to do. Fun people like lilsusie and Idra commented. ^^
