So when you graph something like y^2+ay+x^2+bx+c=0, why is it that between the two hyberbolas that the numbers are imaganery?

Because no X or Y values result in a 0.

That should be obvious following from what the lines are.

take an easy example: x^2 - y^2 - 1 = 0 and solve for y to get your hyperbolas:

y = +- sqrt(x^2 - 1)

see? between the hyperbolas you get sqrt(negative), that is imaginary numbers.
