I found another way to catch hackers by analyzing their replays. This method gives more concrete proof than the lack of suspicious actions method (it can prove 100% hack from as little as 1 replay). I have PMed hotbid a detailed explanation since he was simply the bomb at handling things last time. But he has not responded, maybe he is on vacation or something, does anyone know?
Last time we caught alot of hackers and then the hack makers patched their hacks in a few days. Since it hasn't been that long since then, there probably aren't going to be many replays to get and find more hackers. So I'm thinking the best thing to do is to simply announce that there is a new way catch hackers, but without announcing how. Hopefully this will discourage people from hacking in the first place (at least in tournaments and stuff). I would like to think that I prefer to prevent people from hacking in the first place than actually catching them. Hopefully there can be a news post so hackers can know to stop hacking.
I will also promise to reveal the method by some fixed date to prove that I am not bluffing, and to allow replays from now till then to accumulate. The date should probably be something like Jan 1, 2009. In the meantime I would be happy to look at replays from tournaments to make sure no glory goes to the undeserving.
On another note I am on the counter abuse team at iccup now, but I haven't done anything yet mainly due to timezone difference for communicating with Juppi who was teaching me what to do. I probably should be taking some initiative on my own though, so I apologize to him for my lazyness.
Also, I have a non-serious way to catch hackers, which I think is pretty funny and surprisingly accurate although I would never use it as proof. I'll share that in a later post for fear of bloating this one too much.

He probably just forgot to respond. He told me about this and I was supposed to give you the WCG USA Spades replays so you can confirm once again that he's a faggot, but I forgot.

Someone with skill in prose make a Flag Appreciation Thread!
|
why don't you just not release how its done, and study the reps for tournaments.
That way hackers will still get caught, but have no idea how
|
thats what he's doing -.-
|
|
good job
and yes i agree, if you don't give out the method then the hackers can't update their hacks to counter it
*thumbs up*

WAIT

How about he picks a date to release the source for the hack detection? But until that date he just releases who he caught, not how they were caught. It's brilliant.

Nice going Flag! I'm super curious of how this new method works!
|
This is really good to hear. Hopefully it'll catch those who hack and discourage others from using them.
|
Yea give names.
WE WANT DRAMA ! And die hackers -.-

Omg, get Flag police protection right now, we cannot risk him to be in danger!

yeah
and why not just never release the method excpet to trusted tournament admins

That's a pretty good idea.
@Flag: can you estimate how easily they'll be able to patch once your new method is released?

If you're going to analyze the WCG USA replays, then analyze all of them, not just the suspected hackers

Cheater is fine. I agree, to me hacker means hacking something which implies skill, but running a bw hack that someone else wrote doesn't take any. It is just convention though to call them that.

On June 24 2008 04:09 NonY[rC] wrote: i'm working on collecting some reps from wcg usa Alright send me replays when you're ready. One thing though, did these people actually win anything or place well in tournament? It would be best to only check winners, because by announcing who hacks and who doesn't, hackers could start to piece together which hacks are detectable and which aren't, if there are any. I wouldn't mind checking one for others but results should be kept in closed circle.

You'd be pretty pissed off, thinking I'm a liar, have an agenda, or just made a mistake. At least this way you'll know that any wrong will eventually be righted. It's the same reason people want a concrete date that we will be out of Iraq by even though it would be better to just get out as soon and efficiently as possible how ever long that takes. Also this way people can check on their own over replays, I can't easily check all replays that are out there.

Hahah sweet After your last method I was thinking the probability of catching hackers would now be a lot lower than before, but here you surprise us yet again!
I hope it works well. Good job!

Nice one Flag. Hunt those fuckers down!

Flag, congratulations on discovering a new method.
You should get some people who are familiar with server-side coding (ASP, PHP, JSP, .NET, etc) to help you write a web-based application to check for the hacks. I'm assuming that your new method can be determined mathematically? By setting up a web page where a user can upload the replay, you can keep the source safe, while allowing everyone in the community to use your findings.
If any part of this does not make sense, let me know.

Just wait till TSL2 ends in my opinion. (when btw?) ^^
Waiting too much could also be bad because know that they know that there is some catching it. They will prolly try to find holes and eventually find it, and fix it, before we can benefit too much.
Anyway great job flag, keep it up

If any part of this does not make sense, let me know. That is a good idea, but it should be done after release of the method because it could just be used to narrow down which hacks it catches, and with more trial and error possibly what it catches.

My hat is off to you flag. Great, great job! +1 vote for the cannon icon.
But please everyone, don't wait too long to release this method. It will only result in accusations and flaming excesses and at some point the hack creaters will find out anyway.
