I have this Westel DSL modem that is just a modem and nothing else, I want a very reliable(will work for years+) and decent signal strength(50ft+/-?) router, basically, I've never bought a router before and I need it for other computers in my house, someone recommend me a router thats around $100? Thanks.

I've been hearing good things about the Linksys WRT54 on here and other sites. I think that's the one I'll be buying as we'll need wireless soon at home.

Any of the WRT54 ones are great. I have a WRT54GS. If you have the guts, you can try to hack it so that you're able to have more port slots and other extra features.

I would do it, but I can't afford another router if it messes up. <_<

I use d-link rangebooster N.

I've had no problems with anything (SC or torrent) as of yet.

I've just recently flashed on the dd-wrt firmware onto a Linksys wrt54g (version 8), which adds some extra functionality. That wrt54g v8 only has 2 MB of flash memory, so only the micro version of the dd-wrt firmware can be installed on that (not enough space to hold other versions), meaning it doesn't offer as much extra features, but it at least allows the use of the router as a repeater, bridge, client, etc. rather than just an AP--in any case, these different modes of operation aren't useful to most people anyway, who just want wireless service for their other devices.

I hear good things about Buffalo routers as the best of the cheap kinds, but apparently they're having legal issues right now and can't sell their products or something? Anyway, the Linksys wrt54g is a good, standard wireless router for under $50 that you should be able to find in just about any store.

Just note that in the version 8, the antennas are not detatchable. If you for some reason wanted to flash on the dd-wrt open source firmware as an alternative to the supported native Linksys firmware, I could probably give you the relevant links for the correct version of the firmware to use (it's buried in like the 30th page of a forum post, lolz; no stable release works).

At this moment, the wireless N standard is in the later stages of revision and dealing with legal issues, etc. It's the next greatest thing in wireless LAN standards, and pre-N or draft N products have already been on the market for one or two years by now I think. These products hope that the current draft will be close enough to the final draft that they will be able to perfectly interoperate, but it's something of a small gamble. If you wait a couple of years you'll be able to get an actual 802.11n product, which may or may not be worth waiting for.

The draft-n products are superior in range and speed to the current standards: a, b, and g. However, unless you have multiple think concrete walls all over the place and/or need speeds higher than 3 MByte/s, any cheaper, established 802.11g product should be fine for your needs.

So just go with the Linksys wrt54g or something similar.

I have a NETGEAR WGT624v3 wireless router and it sucks. I had to make my network wired because it was crash every 5 days and I would not have internet for about 1-2 hours. Not to mention my download speed was inconsistent. Also it's even worse when you want to play some FPS games since the ping would be so high.
