I'm thinking of buying a new (hooded) winter coat. Here (near New York City) the temperature varies in the winter between approximately 0F (-18 C) and 50F (10 C). I'm looking for a coat that will be warm enough for those really cold days, but still can keep me dry, even in a drizzle. My older coats were all ski jackets, or later college gear which I am going to stop using now. I've done some shopping around on internet sellers as well as some nearby store catalogs, and it's difficult to tell if the more expensive ones are actually better than the cheaper ones.

I'm looking for suggestions for coats, preferably for coats that you actually own, and can vouch for. I'm looking for a good value; either a nice inexpensive coat, or a quality one that costs. Thanks.

With stuff like this, it is always better to buy used. This significantly lessens your environmental impact and your involvement with exploitative labor practices. I would find a thrift store and see what you can do. As to a specific coat to look for, I have no suggestions :[ I've just been wearing multiple layers of stuff I already have. Works fine for me. Just my damn feet keep getting cold.

Hey you live near NYC? Let's meet up one day! :D

Anyways, I bought the Wolf Jaw jacket from Abercrombie and Fitch. $170 but DEFINITELY worth it. That jacket is all you need for the winter. Maybe some leg warmers :D

edit: The outside material is cloth so it might be bad for a rainy day (usually it's warmer on rainy days though so I wear my Apex North Face; light and made of good material and blocks out wind and rain but sucks in sheer cold)

I have been wearing this. It keeps me quite dry and it's pretty toasty as well.

Also, equinox, you spent $160 on a hoodie lined with fake fur. The fuck?

The URL doesn't work. Can you give the specifics?

Layering clothing is better than trying to buy one good coat.

Something like this might be good: http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?page=storm-chaser-3-in-1-jacket,-men's&storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&categoryId=42674&guideCategoryId=502579&feat=502579-dg&from=GL

I can't personally vouch for it, but nothing that LL Bean makes is bad.

It's a military style jacket (M65) with plenty of pocket space and a hood that can zip away into the collar. So far it's proven to be quite water resistant (it's constantly raining here in Portland) and very warm as well, though admittedly it doesn't get much lower than freezing here. As an added bonus, it quite fashionable but not too trendy. It will cost you about $180, but I think it's very worth it.
