How did you ever expect the taste of certain candies because they are nothing like the real taste...
People start eating candy since they're young so I guess people already know what the flavor's going to be, like there's two different types of strawberry flavor, the actual and the artificial which dont taste alike at all. But I think its in your system so long you don't even care what fruit flavor it is, you just eat it. Same with like those fruit soda drinks, like Fanta; those are good to drink but when you think about it, its almost nothing like the actual fruit except maybe for orange, its alittle bitter. I just repeated myself like 20 times. And for popular sodas like Coke and Pepsi, how would you categorize the taste, its not just sugar but its hard to explain.

Eh... artificial flavors are often identical to the real thing, there's just not the other stuff that would be in the fruit so it tastes different. For example synthetic vanilla extract is just... pure vanilla extract synthesized from phenol, whereas the real stuff is extract from beans via ethanol and has who knows what else in it. There's strawberry gum that would fool me if it weren't for the texture/lack of water.
I have no idea about soda though. I imagine the sugar makes it taste slightly off as well.

I think they just make random stuff and if it tastes good then they market and sell it, if it happens to be any somewhat similar to an existing taste (usually that of fruits) then they market it as such.

Watermelon and raspberry are generally close.
What's scary though are Jelly Bellies. I mean, holy crap, those taste exactly like what they are supposed to be.
Buttered popcorn? You got it.
Buttered toast? No problem.
Grass? (Harry Potter version) Why not?
Dirt? (Same story) Sure!

Cola's are generally vanilla and cinnamon. It is very strange what flavors some soda though.. You'd probably never guess that Dr. Pepper is flavored with prunes.

I hate watermelon flavored everything; NEVER tastes like watermelon.
All the artificial flavors suck :<

Idk, whenever I eat artificial flavored stuff I'm eating it as a whole different food, not a substitute for what its supposed to taste like. My favorite would be strawberry.

You should read "Why McDonalds fries taste so good?" its a nice book on the flavoring industry.
well, the artificial flavoring started with perfume companies and then developed into a milion dollar business. Now scientist are behind what you call flavoring
the chemicals dont hurt your body though, they are FDA approved.

I remember learning in chemistry (like 8 years ago) that esters were artificial flavors, but you can probably look this up from a reliable source.

It depends from fruit to fruit. I really like cherries, but anything with cherry flavoring like popsicles or candy is pretty nasty to me. Same thing with grape, but orange on the other hand is tasty.
