Summer is the time to go out, pick flowers and chase butterflies, run on hills and swim in lakes. Yet with the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are forced to stay home. I hope that this song will make you feel happier as you remember that wonderful summer day.
Mamoru Fujisawa, professionally known as Joe Hisaishi, is a Japanese composer who composed a lot of music for Studio Ghibli movies. Joe Hisaishi composed 'One Summer Day' as the main theme for 'Spirited Away' (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi), a 2001 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and animated by Studio Ghibli. Spirited Away tells the story of Chihiro Ogino, a 10-year-old girl who, while moving to a new neighbourhood, enters the world of Kami (spirits of Japanese Shinto folklore). After her parents are turned into pigs by the witch Yubaba, Chihiro takes a job working in Yubaba's bathhouse to find a way to free herself and her parents and return to the human world.
'One Summer’s Day' perfectly captures a story that’s bittersweet, even though it’s full of fun and adventure. There are intentionally discordant notes scattered throughout and a melody that ventures in and out of minor-key territory. The melody sounds sad, but yearning, too, reflective in a way that echoes the complexity of the film itself. This song is also featured in Joe Hisaishi's album 'Encore'.
