Some time ago I had this idea of using save games to practice and memorize builds. It seems to work really well.

During 1v1s it's sometimes hard to remember every detail about a build. With practice you can stop getting supply blocked but doing a build optimally takes some analysis as well as repetition.

To shorten the time needed to repeat the build, go to single player and start doing the build against the computer. Save the game once you're past the part that you already know well enough, for example in a rax-FE build you'd save maybe after starting the CC.

Copy a build from a VOD. Try to write down every single relevant detail. Then, when you're practicing it, if you mess something up, see how much it affects the build, and re-load the saved game and do it again, until you can do it perfectly. For example, in Flash's TvP double expand build, I found out that if you delay the 2nd gas even a little bit, you will not have the 600 gas needed for throwing a bunch of factories about 5 minutes later.

Here are a few examples of me practicing build orders:

Flash TvP double expand

Bisu PvT expand with 3 gates

Flash TvZ 5-rax expand

Definitely a good point, most of the extended build orders are pretty hard to effectively practice all at once, especially from scratch, breaking them into specific chunks makes it much more manageable to practice effectively.

It's a great idea, much better than running through the first 3 minutes every time you mess up. The minor downside is that reps don't work from save games so you can't review your execution. Or you can just record it.

The problem with such method is that in normal games vs real opponents every game is different and if you focus on this way of practicing, you won't in fact improve (in my opinion). I think that getting practice partner and simply executing the build over and over against real players is better. You gain necessary experience against variety of different builds and tricks that opponents throw at you. You will see holes or weaknesses that your builds have. You will also know how to adjust your build to different situations, which is MUCH more valuable then making factory 3 or 5 seconds earlier. Playing against computer will make you learn the perfect build order, but in 90% of real games you won't be able to execute this perfect build order.
Be the change you want to see in the world.
