So I just came back home after three weeks, feel a little sick, it's cold and rainy outside and my car won't start. That would be the typical conditions to spend a weekend playing some SC2 ...

It's really hard to appreciate what you have until someone takes it from you. For the last five years, SC2 was a big part of my life. And it was mostly team games with my wife and my friends, it was just good the thing to do in the evening, particularly when the rest of the day sucked.

Now that's gone because of some corporate idiots at Blizzard who don't seem to care in the slightest. Yeah, I can buy a super shiny new computer, I do physically have the money for that, but nobody can even promise me that it help anything because they apparently fucked the game beyond recognition - and I don't want to waste my savings for uncertain results, because every $500 on the account is potentially a month I don't have to work.

So here I am, sitting in my office, crying ... well not really just over a video game but over the fact that it takes so little to make my life suck again.

Sorry to hear that sc2 was the only thing keeping you from depressing mate.

There are other activities you can do with your wife and friends. Depending on what you and your wife/friends like, I can think about sports (hiking, jogging, other sports), going to the movies/theater/museum, go out and have a drink, eventually work on redecorating your home, or take another hobby (model airplanes/cars, woodworking, whatever you can think about that you could like). Or even more simply, just another computer game.

I don't want to seem rude/intrusive in your life, but if the only thing keeping you from crashing down is playing sc2 in the evening, maybe you should consider switching jobs ? It doesn't sound like the current one is really challenging/satisfying you enough.

I hope it gets better.

Yeah, I like to do other things as well, but it's just mostly outdoors and it's really not very inviting these days (also it's hard to get somewhere, when my car broke down and I am not feeling very healthy). I am just upset that I can't seem to find a way to do something I like so much and it makes me sad and when I am sad, everything is bad and stupid. Venting it is pretty goood though ...

And my job - I don't really think there is much room for improvement, I not generally very good at ... doing anything. My current job is probably the best of the bad choices for me - and it has some pretty cool moments, such as the worldwide travel that sometimes happens, fieldwork with telescopes and so. Only it also has the slightly soul-crushing parts of programming/data processing/writing papers etc...

edit: @OtherWorld: Indeed, that would be good. For some reason, I can repair much bigger things and more expensive than a car in remote locations, but when it comes to fixing my car conveniently located in my backyard, I am usually completely lost, don't really know why ...

I'm not sure what Blizzard employees have to do with you not having a computer?

Either way, it sounds like you should focus on your work or other hobbies to take your mind off StarCraft for a while

The way I understood it, it isn't a computer problem: it's that LotV problem where some people get super low (i.e. barely playable) framerate for no apparent reason, despite having a good computer.

Ah, I was unaware of that problem. I don't have a new computer but mine works fine.

There are always work arounds.
It is 99% of the time due to users.

@OP:

Have you tried launching the 32-Bit Sc2.exe? It shouldn't be that different from HotS or WoL, compatibility wise...

This blog should be more of a tech issue, than a rant towards blizz employees. It's pretty ignorant to get mad, instead of closing out all the options. (unless your PC is just really really bad.... but then you wouldn't have been able to play HotS anyways aswell).

It's not even a LotV thing. At the start of HotS, my laptop could run HotS on high settings with no problem (except for maxed fights). Fast forward a few months and the damn thing is nigh unplayable with everything on the lowest settings on the same machine.

Have you played any team games? What is your fps in 200/200 1v1 fights?

If the answers are at least one of "yes" and ">20", would you mind to share you setup. I have only a very limited idea about how to compare one computer to another these days (it was surely much easier back in the time, when you knew that 160 Mhz>100 Mhz...) but if I can collect some examples that work, maybe I will be just able to pick up some components and play again ...

I have tried enough "workarounds" to be quite fed up with that. 32bit was the first thing obviously, I am not the dumb to not just put the problem into google and do the first couple of things that pop. I have even filed several bug reports with Blizzard, but they don't seem to really care. I was able to play WoL and HotS with no issues until 3.0.

In my opinion, it is you who is being ignorant. The "99 % due to users" mantra of IT people is well-known to me and it is stupid. When I am paying real life money for software, I am expecting it to work. I am also not expecting that it will stop working when an updated is forced down my throat. Yes, I am angry, but I am entitled to be, this was obviously fucked by Blizzard, there is zero contest to that and you would know it if you tried to at least read something about the problem before spewing out judgements.

One big reason for my anger is the hopelessness. I want to play SC2, in particular I want to play team games, because I enjoy that a lot - but I have no good idea how to do that - or at least how to manage doing that cost-effectively. There are no reliable information on what hardware is "OK" and which is not. There are contradictory reports of people with similar setups, some can play fine and some cannot. Can't you see how frustrating it is? The main reason why you don't see a lot of people mad about the same problem is probably that most will just say fuck it and go play something else when they encounter this kind of shit.

That's why picking up birdwatching made such a big difference in my life, because it is a thing I just CAN do whenever I please. Nobody can stop me from going out to nature and enjoy it (well, at least not yet and not in Europe). I really wish things about computers were that easy.

I remember reading one of your other blogs were you were up in the clouds about your (and your team's) hard work finally paying off (can't remember the subject, something with physics ).
I was also under the impression that you considered LOTV to be an acceptable expansion to HOTS.

Wow, am I confusing you with someone else?

Anyway, sorry I can't be of more help but good luck with your technical problems.

Well, sorry if I came across an ass. But we "IT people" are getting wrong information on any given issue, be it simple shallow questions or deeper issues. I agree that it is stupid, but from your original post, there was no indication at all, that you had any knowledge whatsoever on your issues and seemed like a random user rant.
The reason I said that if you were able to play HotS, but not LotV was an user issue, was because nothing much changed since the introduction of 3.0.. So looking at your issue now, I will shut up and let you be angry, since it is more justifiable than it was before I (we) knew these things.

The reason I called you out was because we "IT people" (mainly me) are also sick and tired of the mantra that "everything should always work and if it doesn't work, it is the fault of the pc/device/program/<insert anything here>.

TLDR; Another perfect example of miscommunication on both ends. Disregard my first post.

Did you try lowering the sound settings and unchecking the box about "units responses" and the "echo"? (they were annoying as fuck anyways but now you just hear "bip" instead of "not enough minerals" which was quite useful)
I think I gained some fps doing that.
edit : also I think it's not that he badly needs sc2 but it's just really frustrating when you want to do something and you can't really and you SHOULD be able to do it yet the issue is weird and complicated.

One time I started crying because I started thinking about how much effort people put into music compared to how much effort I put into my entire life combined. The people telling you to get a therapist because you've had a shitty day might be a little short sighted. Sometimes something minor just hits you in the right spot to spring a leak. Take a walk, treat yourself to something you normally 'shouldn't' have like your favourite take-out food or sweets. Like you said, you weren't crying over starcraft 2, you were crying over your life.

Of course if you're lying in bed all day thinking about how you have no purpose or reason to bother getting up then ignore my shitty advice.

It doesn't sound like you're REALLY crying over the SC2... I mean, I think you know that.

It sucks when the one straw finally breaks the camel's back.

Everyone is like "DON'T CRY", but it's okay to cry sometimes. If you're in your room for days sobbing about SC2, then I'd say that's a bit extreme.

Yeah, I am definitely not crying for days, I just found it interesting that such an absurd thing can make my cry for like half an hour. I am well aware that my mood is rather unstable, but knowing a number of people who are actually getting psychiatric help, compared to them, I think I am pretty fine (having a wife suffer for ten years through clinical depression really changes your view on what is "bad" mental condition). In fact, I think that many people would be better off if they let their sadness surface from time to time instead of trying to be "normal" all the time and people here are pretty quick in jumping the gun when talking about mental conditions.

Cheers to everyone with friendly words. I know it's just some random website about a stupid game (that doesn't even work, ha ha ...) but it's still nice.
