Definitely a fun video but tells a different story from my first impression. Still it got me hooked and I looked up some more Porter Robinson stuff. I remembered him as one of those guys who had one or two good 'bangers', standard EDM-stuff. Turns out he himself admitted in an interview that that was basically him, but for his new album he wanted to do something different:
The kind of songs that sound less like bangers you’d play in the heart of the club and more like ones you’d listen to while watching the sunrise after the night is over
After that I checked his soundcloud and found some more of his new songs (the album is only coming out in two weeks).
To give a short summary about the songs released so far:
Lionhearted: see above
Sad Machine: Inspired by the game Portal (not confirmed yet but the voice as well as the lyrics really make it seem like it is) with a duet between a robotic voice and Porter Robinson himself. I've listened to this song a lot, at least a few dozen times by now.
Sea of Voices: Mostly an instrumental but the few lyrics there are make it feel like a Sci-Fi theme
Flicker: A song about the text-to-voice feature of a translation program. Yeah. That doesn't make any sense but it's awesome.
So why am I writing this? Sounds a little bit like advertising. Well, the reason I write this is that I have never been this hooked by music before, never been this hyped for the release of a music album. Somehow the theme of this music really caught me. Maybe the reason that this music speaks so much to me is because Porter Robinson is only a year younger than me and probably grew up in a similar way (with the games and the fantasy and sci-fi novels etc.). That's at least what I imagine. But I can't wait till the release, I already pre-ordered the album even though I normally never pre-order anything. I don't think I've been this passionate about something in a long time. I listen to all these songs (especially Sad Machine) every single day, I browse artwork (Porter is releasing a new piece of concept art for the album every day on his twitter account) and I think about the meaning of both (artwork and music) a lot. The album is called 'Worlds' and to me it seems like it's about all the worlds I know and love as well.
That's the reason I wanted to share this with you guys.
Edit: oh, and here's some of the concept art, just to give you an idea
