Hello fellow LDotaisti,

after the kind response on the last blog entry, I decided to go a little further.

I normally refrain very heavily from posting pictures of my kids on the internet. But after the reception of my remarks on some German language subtleties, I had an idea. In a sudden rush of feelings towards TL, in which I lurked nearly since it beginnings, that includes feelings which belong in a kind friendship or being a member of a big and close family, I will break my rule.

So here it is:

Thank you, TL!

I find it funny that you consider Muschi to be the 'children's word' for vagina. The perception of the word seems to vary a lot among German speakers. I don't think it's that bad, but it's definitely not the word I'd teach my children. One of my German acquantainces perceives it as so lude that she absolutely refuses to ever say the word.
On a purely personal note, I'd like to show Yellow the beauty of infinitely repeating Starcraft 2 bunkers. -Boxer

It is, but children pick up words pretty fast and without you teaching them. I knew the word Muschi in elementary school, and i am absolutely sure my parents would have never told me. same goes for more or less all swearwords really. Muschi would be one of the more innocent one that kids usually use. But as it always is, parents, or older people in general perceive swearwords way differently then young folk.

Yeah, it is the german version of Lord of the Rings. I find it quite okayish for a childrens game. The good but unfortunatly not great Mouse and Mystic is there too, these are the last games that we played. I am a boardgame fan and the last 10 years brought an unrelenting flood of great games, but the same is not true for kids boardgames. In my view the best are: Gulo Gulo, Chicken Cha Cha Cha, Viva Topo, Chateau Roquefort and maybe Louping Louie.

To the semantics: Avorin has the truth of it. My wife and I used it as kids, because our parants used it. We tried to never use 'Muschi' as parents, because it is not a pretty word - and I mean that in a purely aesthetic way - and it is a word which carries a hidden shame, it came along with other words via the kindergarden. Soon we recognised that we too used it again. One of the things you just can't unlearn it seems. It is an interesting topic though. We learned our children the words penis and vagina. And they use penis. The typical children word for it is Pullermann (peeman). And here it comes: if children use Pullermann everyone is okay with it, but if they use Muschi it is always a little more frowned upon, because it has this derogatory undertone. But there is no, I repeat, no other German word for it, whether it is playfull or children like in tone nor is there an acceptable word which grownups can use, which is not shamefull or disgusting, outside of a sexual context that is. So we decided to learn them the medical way. But if you look closer, the word vagina doesn't mean what we are talking about when we use it, because it is just the "tunnel", not the other, more visible parts, that we often mean by it. It is a very complex socio-cultural mechanism, with hints to how we treat man and woman differently and sexuality in general. It is still very shame-ridden and our language shows it.

We try to be as openly as possible when it comes to sexuality. They already know what it is for and why humans - and their parents - do it, and what can come of it. We think that it is the best if they have a positive look on sex, but we also show them that with all things that includes other beings, there is a lot of responsibility. The view on sex should be a fun one, not a look of shame and guilt and pain. But you can only do so much, as the kindergarden example shows.

5/5 for the Malazan Books of the Fallen : )

My gf's small sibling are really into sagaland (enchanted forest). The next step in their household is Settlers of Catan which can be played with kids at the age of 10 I guess. Takes them some time to understand etc but that isn't necessarily bad. I too love board games and can't imagine playing less complex games should I have children one day. Oh I'm going to be a horrible dad.

I like your approach to sexuality. Seems very healthy and my parents did it the same way so obviously I'm positive towards your method. My parents always used Scheide (scabbard). That might be a regional thing though.
Isn't most of our problems in sexual education related with the shyness of grown-ups? Sure in school we all laughed when teacher came with bananas into class but that's at best the 2nd step. It felt that most already knew the basics by that time but that again might've changed over the last decade.

Thank you! Yes I like Malazan quite a lot - but really only the first 4 books. I read the rest but they decline in quality rather rapidly.

Of reasons unknown they don't like SagaIand that much... I surely look forward to teach them all the games I like, that will be fun!

The problem with the word 'Scheide' is the same as with 'vagina', even more so, besides, who uses the word sword for penis, so the analogy is quite wrong, although it has its charmes.

The analogy doesn't work that's right but it always worked imo. But I'm not sure if I would use it myself when educating my children. Guess it's something you don't think about until you stand in front of your kids and have to decide.
It's not really adding anything to the discussion but I just had to think of this song again. It's about the male genital by german singer/songwriter Götz Widmann. You might enjoy it. Das zwischen den Beinen/That between the legs

When I first got into the dota scene I laughed pretty hard at Mushi's name since it was considered a pretty crude word in German, kinda like c**t in English. Anyways beautiful kids you got there mate! Where in Germany are you from? I lived near Hamburg for about a year.

Oh, I just noticed that that's a tablet in the picture. For a while there, I thought you owned a framed picture of Mushi. To be honest, I'm a little disappointed.

Nice kids.

Yeah, Mamabear did know it, frowned a little and snapped my salmon away as I did this picture...

Mushi means priest - isn't that gorgeous!

@FinestHour: do you mean Gesamtkunstwerk (houlistic piece of art)

I already said something about the boardgames. The one I did not mention is Robinson Crusoe. It is very good, but a little bit fiddly for my taste.

Have you tried Toc Toc Woodman/Click Clack Lumberjack? I've never played it, but I've heard good things about it. Another fun one is Love Letter.
