When you go steep and deep, I don't particularly see the use in helmets and so I have never gotten one. It could be useful in skiing in the trees (we have some pretty tight tree runs), but then again I just don't over-ski in the trees. If one skiied out of bounds, a helmet might be good due to rocks. If I frequented the terrain park more, I suspect I would buy a helmet because landing on a groomed run off a jump isn't that nice.

But I suspect it is more necessary for snowboarders who tend to get that whiplash into head plant due to catching an edge. For skiiers, unless you are doing flips (and I don't), I can't think of many situations off a jump where the head is going to be the issue over legs, knees, and arms/wrists. (The only injury I've had is a partially torn acl. Skiing tends to be bad on the knees more than the head.)

Also, to be honest if you are on green and blue slopes, a helmet is overkill unless you are one of those maniacs that scream down the hill and have no idea how to stop.

only reason id ever wear a helmet unless i was heliskiing

Why would i not use a helmet?
I think the people suggesting hitting your head is a rare occurence in the slopes might be confusing alpine skiing with cross-country skiing.

Well, it is pretty rare. The only time I can remember hitting my head was when I tried snowboarding (usually a skier). But then the impact was so rough that even with a helmet I was seeing stars and had to call it a day that day. Without I would have gotten a heavy concussion or worse I am sure.
