Greetings!

I have been lurking here on tl for 3-4 years and greatly enjoyed my time here. It is the one forum I come back to time and time again with a great variety of posters as well as moderators. Over that time I have somehow found myself in something of a career. While this is exciting and the rewards are substantial, there are more than a few drawbacks.

I have some concerns about the ethics that rule me versus the ethics that rule the governing body of my workplace. It is not a small organization but I suppose it's not large either. I am a little nervous to go into detail so I'll keep this as neutral as possible.

The body of people we administrate believe we follow a strict set of rules. We follow them to a degree but in the interest of the greater good we bypass these rules at times. Other less savory characters I work with bypass them for their own benefit with little to no oversight. I feel responsible for affecting the lives of people that trust us and my position exists solely on money paid by these people.

My plight boils down to:

Stay and compromise some of my beliefs to try and affect a system positively, or leave finding work through connections I have developed during the course of my toils.

Upsides to staying:
Financial Security
Connections with influential/knowledgeable people
Authority(which could be viewed as negative but I guess that depends on how it's used)

Downsides include:
Shady Co-Workers
Responsibility for numerous peoples' well-being(also could be viewed as positive, but nerve wracking none the less)
Being trapped in a political merry-go-round of trading favors and kissing ass/smiling when required. Lots of bullshit involved and I like being blunt both personally and professionally.

If I leave I have to take into account someone else will fill my position. The only reason I mention this is that our batting average for new hires is atrocious. New hires have been without exaggeration 75 % negative. These positions as I've mentioned have direct impact on average folk.

I am not asking this to have an internet forum to make the decision for me. I'm posing this question to TL because I know there are wiser and more experienced people here who might have a perspective they want to share. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks for your time TL,

I'd prefer this dialogue not find its way back to my office somehow. The "plan" that has been told to me is that I'm intended to be part of the executive board as well as a long term employee. This could be bullshit but I don't think it is. I'm trying to make a decision before I get in too deep. In case there's any confusion my job is fully legal.

The job itself is basically representing members through negotiation and conflict resolution. One step below legal action I suppose.

That seems to be the norm in most places, unless you know somewhere you can go, where you work with friends don`t expect much difference, people don`t like blunt people, because the truth is hurtfull to them.
Other than that, I`d say lead by example. It can be quite strong to just see someone doing the right thing because it is the right thing, reminds them often times of the morals they once had themselfes.

See there's part of the catch. This is just my opinion but in some circumstances we do things that are wrong to help the greater amount of people.

Other problems include knowing co-workers doing negative things to the membership but due to political pressures not being able to do anything about it.

What I consider "the right thing to do" veers in a very different path from where I am headed. So do I compromise and try and change the path positively with great effort and time, or avoid compromise and find something with less grey area? The more I talk to people about their workplaces the more I think every job is fucked up in its own unique way. Perhaps there is no escape and compromise is part of "growing up".

The more I talk to people about their workplaces the more I think every job is fucked up in its own unique way. Perhaps there is no escape and compromise is part of "growing up".

this is the most depressing truth ever but i say rally against it! Try to be as uncompromising as you can with your own morals because if you lose the capacity for empathy towards those whom you fuck over, you become a part of the machine that dictates the necessity for such lies on a daily basis.

Unless you actually meant the only reason its shady is for the greater good and not for the good of the company or an individual which i assume you meant.

Your gut feel seems to be that it's wrong and you don't want to be part of what's going on. How long have you had these thoughts?

If they're fairly fresh thoughts, maybe let it sit for a little longer and reassess - either it'll become even clearer that the job is no good, or you'll realise something new that makes the job not as bad as it seems now, or your moral compass will readjust itself.

If this is your considered view already, then get the hell out the second you can. Justifying staying as 'someone else will just do it instead' or 'maybe I can influence it for the better' are just bullshit excuses.

I assume the same stuff happens in many administrations. The people part of the organization believe things are one way. In reality business is conducted in a very different manner. The goal that the members and the administration is identical, the ways we go about doing them are not. That's whats shady among other things. Lack of transparency and communication. When you operate with someone elses' money they deserve to know how and why it's being spent. There are liberties taken without full disclosure.

I guess you're in management or consulting. Stay and take the money. Chances are some shitbag will take your place if you leave.

Anyways its not like its only your company. Likely that the whole sector is equally as bad so unless you're going for total career path change.

Oh and if you are in those sectors, nobody really thinks you follow rules so don't worry bout it (at least for management) most people just agree with you to stop minimise changes of you being a cunt.
