My Dog Won't Pee

So when the summer ends, I will be commuting to a new job. We adopted a dog a few years ago, and I won't be able to get home to walk him during the day. I decided to try and teach him to use our back porch. I cut a stick for the door so it opens just enough for him to go in and out on his own without someone robbing us.

Unfortunately, this dog REFUSES to go to the bathroom on the porch. I've tried everything I can think of.

Bought some fake turf from Home Depot since he's used to going on grass. He doesn't care. Bought some spray that is supposed to attract dogs to urinate on it. He doesn't care. I pulled some plants and grass from outside and put it on the porch for him. Doesn't care. We take him out there with his leash and harness like he's used to going, and even tried using a "potty command" when we go for walks for him to associate with. Doesn't care. He just doesn't fucking get it.

He sits there and stares at me like an idiot. Eventually he gets bored and sits down. I try to get him up, walk him around, and he stares at me again like an idiot.

Eventually I got frustrated and said, "if he doesn't want to go here, then he won't go at all." I decided to just wait for him to need to go really bad, and then take him in the patio again, and reward him if he goes. My wife thinks it is cruel to make him hold it, she thinks he is suffering even if he doesn't show any need to go. Do you think this is cruel or not? I don't know.

I'm not sure what else to do. I can't leave him alone all day in the house, he will have an accident. I can't drive home in the middle of the day. I don't want to give some stranger the keys to my house. I don't want to give the dog up. We've tried all the tips and tricks on the internet, and none worked. Any ideas?

All else fails, keep the dog in a place that has floors you can clean up easily. Alternatively, aren't there pads you can buy for indoors for dogs/cats to use? Just like a giant diaper you lay flay on the ground in case they do go.

Why would you want him to go ON the porch?

Have you tried pissing on the porch yourself to show him that it's ok?

It's just cement, I can hose it off.

I got so desperate I actually considered this. Doubt he will get it though.

Yeah we tried those floor mats a couple weeks ago, he never used them. I can't think of any place in my house where I want dog piss on the ground. Plus that's like reverse house training, and I don't want him trying to hold it in every day for hours and hours.

I guess I'll just go with the plan of making him hold it until he goes. Don't see any other options.

Have you tried talking to an expert about your animal problem? As in, his vet, a trainer, etc.?

I don't know what your normal system is, but I assume at some point (shortly) after waking up you'll take the dog outside to pee (also assuming it's an inside dog). Just take the dog to the porch instead of outside. Walk in a few circles ending up back at the desired spot if the dog doesn't want to go on the porch right away.

I understand your wife saying it's cruel to make the dog hold it, but you're not doing anything wrong and your dog should learn pretty quickly where it's acceptable when it really has to go.

Just get him into the habit, anything with him will take some time to adjust to and learn

your dog is hella stubborn. I think i taught my dog to pee in the back yard by rewarding him when he does so, fairly simple but I guess my dog adapts quite easy.

Also I don't think its cruel to let your dog hold his pee? Since i KNOW when my dog needs to, he doesn't really "hide" his need to pee. before we had a doggy door he use to go ape shit if he needed, now he just leaves the house and pees.

good luck!

For some dogs, it's just not gonna happen. I would suggest getting the pad, it will cost a bit, but it's worth it. Also, go talk to a professional trainer, I think that this is generally a discipline thing that can be taught out, the way you are doing it is indeed cruel; this is because he has been trained to pee on walks, so he will hold it until he enters a situation he deems similar to a walk. That's all I've got for you .

Asked my fiancé, she said she likes the idea of forcing him to hold it then reward him for using the porch was the best idea, she also suggest "puppy pads" (sheets that dogs can pee on indoors, but use them on your porch). I think it's absurd to call the "force him to hold it" idea cruel.

I'm having a similar problem currently where my basset hound won't poop because the firecrackers scare her and she wants to come back inside.

You said your dog shows when he needs to go, how long does that usually take? We waited 7 hours today to see if he would go, then my wife gave in. Now that I think about it, he's held it for about 9 hours overnight. Maybe that means he can handle waiting the whole work day? I don't know.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

My dog's pretty small so the timings won't be the same but it will move to the door and whimper or bark a bit when it needs to go, happens 2 or 3 times a day.

My pup is pissing everywhere and staining our concreted floor (painted ) with it.

Want to swap?

(FYI, she's 7 weeks old and only got her last week, attempting to train her slowly but she's so young lulz.)

Just don't go with him until he does it in the house, then show it to him like a puppy and drag him to your porch. Or get a cat toilet. We have a dog and two cats, and sometimes the dog just goes into there and takes a piss while the cats stand outside and watch confused.

If you are trying to train him to use the puppy pads rub some of his pee on a new mat so he knows its for peeing on. Also get the good puppy pads w/ the scent on it.

The wife and I have a shitzu, we trained her to use puppy pads and leave her in the house all day. Even though she has access to the pad 24/7, now that she is older, she will usually hold it the whole time from when my wife leaves work in the morning (I leave before her) til I get home, it can be 10 hours sometimes. She holds it the whole day because she knows if she does it in front of us she gets a treat. So I don't think it is abnormal for a dog to hold their pee 9 hours, puppies won't be able to and old dogs may have issues but under normal conditions I don't think it is an issue.

casuistry, where you ever successful in training your dog to pee on the porch? We are in a similar situation, my wife started a new job that is much further away and can no longer get home to take our dog out. We tried the fake grass, but he refused. We tried putting 3 sections of sod out there, but he refuses.

I was hoping you might have been successful and could give us a tip.
