This is done on toned paper (dark yellow ocher) with charcoal and pastel pencil. The rough lighting study at the beginning I sometime do when I try to enhance the lighting on the subject and want to test out to see if it works. It's a simplified statement, which is often the hardest part because if you can get that over all lighting and structure down, it is relatively easy to just add more and more details if you want, then it's a matter of how realistic / what style you want the drawing to be.

Hate to say it but your rough sketch looks better than any portrait I've ever attempted. Superb work as per usual, do you watch Game of Thrones or is its cast simply an easy pool to pluck subjects from? Looking forward to more of these.

Both. I am a Game of Thrones fan. And my choice of subjects sometimes come from how many people requesting the drawing. If i see the same character being spammed/suggested to me frequently enough I just tend to do it. Most time I pick public personalities just so people know what the portrait is building toward, that's about it. But I do enjoy Game of Thrones a lot so it's a bonus.

Superb portrait as always. I love how the sketch makes anything I've ever drawn look like stick figures. Since you look into requests, I'd sure like to also see Neil Degrasse Tyson, astrophysicists need some portraits too!
