Cheapest housing options are probably the co-ops - I think they're officially called housing cooperatives or something. Examples are like Kloin, Kingman, Casa Zimbabwe, so try looking for those in google. But these are where the craziest parties and a lot of weird things happen on a regular basis - if that's not what you want, you really should probably just look to rent a single room or find people to get an apartment with. If that's still okay with you, you need to sign up for it in advance - there's usually a waitlist for getting in. A typical 2 bedroom apartment costs about $2400 a month here, which is usually split 4 ways to about $600 a person - then add gas, internet etc ===> ~$700 a month is about average here. A studio apartment costs in the $1000+ range, so it's sort of an expensive option, but you will have the place to yourself. Another option is the International House, which is basically a dormitory for international students. I don't know the exact prices (probably more than apartments for sure), but you have food/dining options so you don't have to cook, and there will also be around a lot of other people who aren't from the US, so it should definitely be easier to make friends here. You can also try looking on Craigslist - google "Craigslist San Fransisco" and go to that website, and click the Eby (East Bay) option. People post housing/apartment openings here, so if you're okay living with a random person, this is not a bad way to go. Summer life in general is definitely less crowded than during the school year, but there are still a good number of people around for summer school and research/work etc. You can definitely find things to do. As for must do activities - in Berkeley itself, there's not all that much stuff, but off the top of my head, I'd say: hike up the Fire Trails, go to Tilden Park, eat at Cheeseboard and a lot of other food places, go to the Marina. For shopping and sight seeing and definitely for night life, you should go to San Fransisco - it's a 30 minute subway ride away and there are a lot of things to do there from food to shopping to sight seeing to clubbing and bar hopping. That's all that I can think of now. I'll try to keep looking at this thread if you have any more questions. Feel free to PM me too | ||
