farvacola: Apologies for my brevity. It's 2:30 in the morning and I've consumed copious amounts of the reefer.

Yeah this doesn't usually turn out as well as the respective dude would hope, and even if it does it doesn't tend to last long. Life isn't a manga nor a romance flick, sadly. Obviously you're gonna do what you want, but you gotta realize that sometimes you need to look after *your own* best interests. I mean it's not like by passing up this opportunity you're giving it to your friends, let's face it, "He has had a thing for her for years" that ship's pretty much long sailed. Unless we're missing some crucial information here, but even so... years?

Your loyalty is a good thing, but in the real world chemistry between two people should not be intervened by jealousy or insecurities. Pursuing a relationship behind his back would be a dog move, however if the chips landed on you and the girl developing something, you need to address him and express how much you like the girl and how much she likes you. Then it's just up to him from there, and a best friend would get over it.

I know it sucks man. Been in this position before myself, but there will ALWAYS come another girl that you will feel for. Reading all these answers... None of you knows how his friend is as a person, how can you give such advice? "He should understand" What if his friend has an altar of her with candles and voodoo dolls and big posters and pictures of her with different outfits and postures and facial expressions... OP: Ultimately you have to ask yourself this: Is it worth risking a lifelong friendship with your best pal for a relationship with a girl that might not even last a year? The first step is to tell you friend how you feel. After that you have to feel what to do.

Then he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting with that girl or any other girl for that matter unless he changes his attitude. Roflmfao that's just creepy. "None of you knows how his friend is as a person" right back at you bro. How do you know it's a lifelong friendship just because he said best friend? You know friendships change over time right? It's pointless to speculate this kind of thing because it can go either way anyway. Same goes for the chick, who are you to say she won't be a great fit for OP and might have a great longlasting relationship? You're just making shit up as warped by your own views and perception.
