Hello,
I've been using a Logitech G5 for something like 5-6 years. The mouse is now absurdly expensive because Logitech doesn't make them anymore; it's about $150 on Amazon for one. This is the mouse I'm talking about:
The Logitech G5's mouse surface texture is different from other mice I've used and is the main reason I like it enough to have bought 2 of them in the past. It's a kind of hard-rubbery-textured surface; anyone who has used a G5 knows what I'm talking about. It's very dry and has an almost dusty-type feel to it.
Now when I look at mouse reviews and when I try to google what the mouse surface texture is for most mice I find almost nothing, because nobody seems to really care. For me, the hard plastic shell surface of a mouse like the MX 518 is terrible and makes my hand very clammy and uncomfortable. My hand stays normal and comfortable when I use the G5. Here's the MX518, the shiny hard plastic shell is quite evident:
So, since I can't feel a mouse when I look it up online, I can't feel a mouse in the store because they're packaged in plastic, and I can't find anyone who actually talks about the texture of the mouse in mouse reviews, I'm turning to TL, a large community of people who use gaming mice. Are there any gaming mice out there that have a G5-like surface texture? Do those Razer mice have that kind of texture? It looks like they have a kind of matte rubber surface but I can't be sure.
I'm looking at the Logitech G500 but I'm concerned by all the reviews saying the sensor is in an awkward position and that the side buttons are very awkward and have a tendency to overlap and be difficult to hit. The G500 is supposed to be the G5's successor/upgrade:
As you can see there are 3 buttons on the thumb side for a right hander and that middle third button looks very annoying. I would probably just disable it if I got that mouse.
Thanks for any input.

You mean a rubbery kind of texture? Razer mice have that. Hold out a little longer though, the Razer Deathadder 2012 is coming out very soon, and it looks mighty awesome. Also, Razer DA/Abyssus has the best sensor in the market bar none, if it means anything to you.

I can't offer any help, but I can commiserate. My logitech MX310 is finally showing some wear after 8 years of use. Logitech hasn't made them in ages and I hate the shape of modern mice. They made such greatones why did htey have to change them T_T

I can't speak for the G5's texture, but my Razer Abyssus does have a matte...plastic feel to it. Definitely not rubber-like IMO, but it's comfortable and feels softer than normal plastic to my fingernail. My only complaint with it is that after about a year some of the plastic coating has started rubbing and flaking off in places and it's kind of annoying.
EDIT: Question to Deathadder users, does it have some kind of hardware/easily accessible software switch for dpi? The abyssus has a nifty slide on the bottom to change dpi, but I don't see that mentioned in the DA's product description.

I've been reading about the new Razer software having some sort of DRM crap where you need to be connected to the internet to use the mouses features. Any input on that, Razer users?
Frankly I don't really care that much about the mouse's "features." As long as it's decently sensitive, has 2 side buttons on the thumb area, and has a good texture (this is like by far the most important thing to me, kind of weird I know), then I'm fine with it. I don't need 10 billion DPI or 12 buttons like that crazy mouse that looks like it has a calculator on the side of it. Also, look at these mice, they look like fucking gundams or something:

Just get used to the G500. Stay away from that Razer shit.

I had a g5 like you that lasted for fucking ages. after it finally died i got a razor deathadder. it died after a year. replaced with an abyssus. died after a year.
i know its all just anecdotal evidence, but the g500 i bought a few months ago has been awesome, feels a lot sturdier than the razor mice (also a little heavier). the buttons are fine once u get used to them. get it imo

idk maybe you have sweaty palms or something, because I use the mx518 and its nothing but great.

The current Razer DeathAdder has slippery plastic for the sides, which is much worse than the MX518's texture. That's being changed for the 2013 version, though. With that fixed, the only other problem is that the drivers are garbage, but it's fine without them installed.
I really hate my DeathAdder, and was going to replace it with a Logitech G400 soon, but maybe I'll try out the 2013 version instead, because apart from the slipperiness it's a great mouse. Edit: Actually, at exactly double the price of the G400, I can't see it being worth it at all.
