Well I just landed a really sweet research job at my number 1 pick. So now the actual moving commences. The place is just east of central park so the commute from the northern part of Brooklyn doesn't seem too bad.

I have some specific questions if anyone can answer them (PM or posts):

1. Good neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods in Brooklyn.

2. How easy is the subway? Does it run on time usually?

3. Cost of food? (Groceries, grabbing a quick lunch, and if im too lazy to cook dinner and want something kind of cheap)

4. Cost to go out on the town? (Bar w/ live music or something, I'm not a big club guy)

And still general advice is always welcome. I'm flying out there in a little over 2 weeks. Oh, and any advice for searching for roommates. I have no experience looking for roommates.

I'm planning to move to NYC in a few years so I do a little research every now and then for fun. I've stumbled across a few helpful websites that you may find insightful.

http://nymag.com/realestate/articles/03/realestate2003/neighborhood_map.htm This was useful to get a feel for the different neighborhoods and their reputations.

http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/neighbor/neigh.shtml Is another similar one that maps out all the neighborhoods.

http://www.noisiestpassenger.com/ is a witty/funny blog written by a girl who did the whole transplant-from-far-away thing. She's written about a lot of the experiences and has a lot of advice. I'd advise giving it a skim.

As for places to find housing/roomates...
craigslist has tons of stuff but you'll have to weed through a lot of garbage. Be careful of scams and the whole "wire money since realtor is out of town.." This may be your best bet for finding a roommate, though, seems like there are some legit ones buried in the heap. Also possibly http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/roommate-share

Other sites like http://newyork.apartments.com/ and http://www.renthop.com/ may help if you decide to go with a studio.

I'm sure you'll be able to find heaps of other sites if you do some digging. Good luck!

Where in Northern Brooklyn? DUMBO? Greenpoint? All I can say is the area you commute to for work is nice; old buildings, museums, tourists, all-around upper-class neighborhood.

1. Certain parts of central and eastern Brooklyn are relatively dubious
ie. East New York, Bed Stuy(Actually considered north but still), Crown Heights, Brownsville

2. Subway never runs on time as its in service 24/7- 365, but it really depends on which train you're taking. So just learn how to read the map and follow the system. Its a lot easier to negotiate than many other subway systems around the world even when there is construction occuring and reroutes, heres the website: http://mta.info/

3. I would say its relatively fair as a university student working in the summer

4. Out of town in the metro region is negotiable as theres public transportation everywhere

And as a reference I reside in Southwest Brooklyn.

edit: This is not the first time, you asked. I had deja vu for a second lol...

the subways run whenever the fuck they want to, this is NYC.

cost of food is very dependant on the neighborhood your in. the further downtown you are, the more expensive shit will be.

and why you would want to go out of town for a bar is beyond me, NYC has literally every type of culture/setting you could hope for
Thats "Grand-Master" SMURF to you.....

Holy crap thanks for all the info so far! I figured the subways would never run on time.

Yea #4 is go out on the town, not out of town
I have a friend and a little family out of town if I want to visit them, I'm looking for how much it is and how hard it is to find some live music in any given night.

I'll be working at Rockefeller University, which is on the east side around 62nd. I hear North-East is pretty nice but boring as hell for people my age. I would really like to be able to stroll around and find a cool place to kill some time. I am thinking williamsburg or surrounding are could be nice. At least that is where I hear all the beautiful people roam around.

I've been riding the subway multiple times a day for the past year, and I'll be honest, I didn't even know they had scheduled times. They come so frequently I figured it was just "they come and go".

The trains generally run pretty smoothly. There is an app for smartphones (if you have one) that shows the next train arriving and it is almost always on time +/- 2-3 mins (no biggie). If you can use that app you'll save yourself a lot of trouble.

That being said, yes, there is always construction and trains absolutely always be rerouted and have weird situations. Just don't be afraid to look like a n00b and ask someone.

Ex: Last week the mta decided they want to make all D trains run on the local A while making all D lines nonexistent past 10pm. I saw a whole station full of people waiting for the D train and it wasn't going to come. I just went around telling everyone to find another way to get where they are going lol. Most didn't listen though haha

In BK, just find somewhere in williamsburg. Pretty nice place, has a lot of kool cultural things to do and close to downtown and midtown. Food around there is also relatively cheap and there are a ton of bars with live music close to you. A really popular one is Pianos. There is also places like the lions den and other spots on bleecker. Fat black pussy cats, blue note (jazz if you enjoy it), Fat Cats (again jazz), Cafe Wha
