Hi TL.
My best friend, who I used to be in a band with, has released the first song of his one man project, DAHLIAN, today. It's prog death metal, with a heavy Opeth influence; it also draws inspiration from 90's melodic death metal though. The song he released today is a pretty extensive 12 minute piece called DIVIDUAL, which is thoroughly composed and features completely acoustic passages next to neckbreaking up- and midtempo riffs.
I know there are people here who should definitely enjoy this music so I'll just leave it here and let it speak for itself. I hope you give the guy some props on facebook, soundcloud or right here on TL (he's 'Dahlian' on here).

Meh.
While I am a definite fan of the genre itself what ruins this for me is that I feel he had a clear recording in mind but then had to roll with some low-budget thing. For something with such a trashy recording style it just doesn't sound right.

I don't think it's trashy by any stretch. There's a lot of delay going on on the guitars and the vocals but in my opinion it gives the whole thing a very organic feel. Reminds a bit of Orchid or comparable records. The fact that the music isn't over produced makes it much more sympathetic.

It's okay, I guess. I just found it to be nothing special. Also the transitions are kinda weird, even for prog standards. I know Cephalic Carnage songs with less jarring transitions.

Yeah, I was just gonna post what Surfinbird said, the transitions between "sections" was a little rough...more rough in the last vocal section. Otherwise it was alright. I am not really a good judge, I really don't like vocals in this kind of music, so I enjoyed the last few minutes a lot more than the beginning sections
Jeff Loomis is my kind of prog metal :p + Show Spoiler +

the song and everything is pretty good. but something bugs me. i have a REALLY hard time putting my finger on it. is it because of him trying to sound exactly like opeth?
no idea. i'm listening to a band which is "heavily inspired by death" and i dont mind it a bit.
he should try to not copy anyone. i'm sure he'll make some more likable music then.

Wtf, that was fucking awesome, your friend is very talented!
As for the transition comments I don't agree. The only one that felt kinda out of place was on the 5th minute mark. Besides that everything was perfect.
I've just pressed the play button again.

Sounds great. It's evident that he put a lot of work into this. I'm sure he'll go far, if he keeps up this work ethic.
If I should point out something to work on, it would be the drumming in particular. It is currently fine, but a bit bland. I'm not looking for all sorts of funky fills or breakdowns. But it could be somewhat more interesting. I like the vocal arrangements and the guitar harmonies (harmonics?).
Would like to hear more. + Show Spoiler +Sorry for english fail. My brain won't work at the moment.

I agree, the drumming is what I would also work on, being a drummer myself I usually pay a lot of attention to it. Probably some more snare action with tom fills would work?
Otherwise, very good tell your friend to keep it up!
