You could be in the 0.97th percentile and not be masters. Chill the fuck out, bro?

I think you should stop buying into the whole "if you're not Masters, you're trash" idea. Ask yourself, if the definition of trash is anything but the top few percent, does that idea hold any water at all? I've always felt that the idea behind the negative connotation of "mediocre" is objectively stupid.

You sound like a depressed person. Go read some info on depression and try to fight it - preferably in other ways than laddering, that can only exhaust your system more. If you feel like sticking out is substantial for your existence, go run around the town naked.

Btw. This might help make you feel a little special...

Do we have tags for [Rage Blog]? Sorry to sound so harsh, but if your going to quit just like that then your definitely not in the right mentality.

Go outside take a few breathes in, take a nap (Cures anger) and try again if your willing.

eh come on man, i think you are looking at things with the glass half empty. you got a lot of good things going for you (fiance and nearly masters ), whining is just making it worse. if you feel like dying cuz you are sooo normal, what about the rest of us who are less than you? I guess we should jump off a bridge?

maybe if we had the attitude of a two year old, but we don't. instead we can be optimistic and improve like humans have done for thousands and thousands of years.

Less mad more self improvement

The definition of "trash" in starcraft seems to be you're bad no matter where you are

This is not everything there is you know, most people play just for fun. Unless you're one of those guys who think they are better then everyone else and deserve to win everything no matter what. You need to chill out. Go outside, breath some fresh air, and come play again

Masters is mediocre too. That's why I stopped playing a lot, I'm never going to be more than mediocre, so I'll just play here and there for fun.

It's a sad realisation to come to if you're a competitive type, but unless you're gonna give it absolutely everything, it's not worth caring about. If you wanna keep achieving, get to masters then quit. That's what I did, and I play my placements every season just to keep those filthy diamonds out

Master's isn't anything special. Masters to the starcraft world is basically what a job at pottery barn is. Not the total shit job you had when you were 16, but nothing to be proud of. You shouldn't be trying to prove yourself by your league anyway. Prove youself by self improvement. If you come seeking attention and pity, you probably came to the wrong place.

starcraft is a never ending quest of self improvement

rather than see the huge void you need to fill, instead look at what you've done so far

it's a road that never ends, and you've been running for so long

it's okay to sit down and take a break if you're tired, but just remember it's not the destination, it's the journey

If you really don't enjoy the journey, then stop playing. But the destination of being "awesome masters guy" shouldn't define whether or not you enjoy it.

If you're not having fun or deriving any enjoyment from the game, then stop playing. Has nothing to do with whether you're grandmaster or bronze.

If you're not as good as Flash is in BW, you're trash. That's more or less the general view, everyone considers themselves trash and obviously everyone below them, which is why you hear "if you're not at least masters, you can't have an opinion" everywhere on TL.net. That doesn't mean you're bad at the game, masters are only the top 2% of the whole playerbase, one would generally not make the case that the lower 98% are all trash in most situations.

Personally, I've always found that if I'm in the top 30%, I will consider myself good. I'm not all that competitive and I don't play even close to enough to be expecting a top position, so why would I care? There's just no reason to buy into the "everyone is trash" if you're affected negatively by it. The whole idea of everyone considering themselves trash is that it's good for training, if you think you're awesome, you'll just rage and be despressed. Consider yourself trash, and you might be motivated to improve.

That's an awful thing to say, sure he may be upset but to suggest that hes suicidal about the whole ideal.. really?

Ontopic: If you're nearly masters you're well ''above average'' in terms of leagues so I wouldn't take it that much to heart, just take a break maybe for a week then come back with a clear head.

well then, good news! Normal is not normal, a la house. I'm not sure why you're so hard on yourself. It takes two kinds of people to get into masters quickly, especially if you've seen my recent blog on what caliber of players held master positions in earlier seasons and how the metagame and evolution of player skill is quickly restructuring all ladder players so that they are in their skill appropriate designations.

At this point, it takes two kinds of people to get into masters quickly. Naturally talented or savant types, and hard worker types. Are you planning anything more serious with sc2 like making a little money off it with sponsors? I was approached last night about possibly being sponsored by a fly by night home grown unit from canada, because of my insane number of games played and the fact that I am master and compete in tournaments. I'm still iffy over the idea, because I know it means that I'll REALLY have to step up my game. stop the mass gaming and start really thinking hard and analyzing everything to become better. I wouldn't take sponsorship and stay lazy.

Are you planning to go into more of this kind of thing? Because if you aren't, you shouldn't take it this seriously. Imagine its something that you do because you enjoy the game, and that you will get beaten 50/50 because you choose not to try to be the best. there's no harm in having a hobby where you aren't the best at it. Hobbies are completely for yourself, and noone else has to accept what you do. Just you.

That said, why not find some pro build orders, work on your macro a little better, and practice holding down your economic growth under pressure with some friends. Then take some solid build orders and try to play them out and see what happens.

I as well, personally, wish I could believe these things, but the truth is, as social animals we are subject to the denigration of our peers for what we choose to do.

Why else is "basement virgin living with mom" an insult? they're choosing to do what they want with their life, right? Maybe its jealousy. I know this last word gave everyone reading a chuckle, and thats my point.

However, for starcraft this is perfectly true. You don't need to be good at SC to be special. Try to grow in other areas would be my advice. like going back to school, finding hobbies like bonsai or ceramics, etc.

tbh even if you got into masters, its still pretty mediocre and you'd still be a normal person. Anyone can hit masters, if they had enough time to play, even someone whos in bronze atm could do it. Going from masters to top masters and GM is where youre actually good at the game

everyone below that sadly should just be playing this for fun. Obviously youre not. Get a life

It's funny how tangible being good at starcraft is. I met a guy at a poker game this week end and we began talking a bit about starcraft. He asked me if I were good. I said I know how to play but I'm not really good. Then I asked him. He was really enthousiathic about his 2 gate dt drop vs terran and told me he was decent. Then I asked him about the league he's in, turns out he was silver and I am diamond.

If you don't enjoy playing Starcraft 2 on some level, don't bother practicing. Challenge yourself in a way that you enjoy, regardless of your immediate skill and improvements. Trying to get Masters sounds really great because it's such a tangible goal, but it's still hard lol, especially if you don't like playing Starcraft competetively.

Find a way to have fun. Stop playing to win. Star playing to learn.

This thread has given me something to think about. Strange as the OP is so short. I don't think I'm that special. I don't work hard enough and I'm not as smart as the kids at my Uni. Maybe I am that smart, but I don't work hard enough :/
This isn't something that I've been able to change and something that I may never be able to change.

I have improved a bit since senior year of High School and am, I would say, continuing to do so, but I will probably never become great. Does that make my life not worth living? Nah. I really do have to just try to do what I can. I should not tell myself that if I can't be the best then I shouldn't even bother trying. I shouldn't try to start my own company and become a millionaire if I don't have the resources and backup in case it fails, I should just get a job.

I don't think the Einstein quote was supposed to be limited to skills that allow you to get a job you're great at, but instead that every one has something they are great at that will help them in life as long as they discover what their skill is

It's much much easier to get into masters than GM and getting into GM is much much easier than winning actual tournaments we see on streams every day. So if a person can't even get into masters, then yes, he's relatively poorly skilled, even if masters is top2%

Relative to what? The top 2% or the whole playing field. I have always disagreed with calling people trash when they are better than the far majority of the community. Sure, they can't take any games off of any pros, but they can have a match win of 100% against 90% of the community. That is not trash. You might be a trash pro, but you are a very good starcraft 2 player.

You wouldn't start calling yourself decent in football just because you won some local high school game even though that would put you into a high % relative to amount of people who ever tried playing football at some point in their life

I would call myself decent relative to my piers. You should be proud of your accomplishments and at the same time aware that there is always room to improve.

I also think that by saying "hey, I'm diamond which puts me into top30%, I think I'm quite decent", you're basically giving up on rapid improvement. While you keep in mind that diamond is relatively shit, you have both the pressure and drive to keep pushing for the cool kids club (and once there you realize they're shit also and try to move on, etc). As soon as you start telling yourself you're already in the club, you've lost the drive.

This part I agree with a little more. If you only want to be the top than you do not want to lose your drive to succeed. However, I still think a little sense of accomplishment is important. I believe it creates a better mental state that will only enhance your learning experience.
