I remember watching this game sAviOr vs Bisu MSL Finals and Bisu using his famous corsair/dt combo beating sAviOr who had a 83% win rate in the match up and also had just recently beat Nada to reach first to 6 consecutive titles. When Bisu won, I was literally in tears. I hope sc2 will have the same effect on people some day.

I think sc2 didn't have the same effect on many people mainly because the players aren't as well respected. I think if you really respect someone and think of them as your hero, when you see them work so hard through a tournament and finally end up winning the finals, it just brings tears to your eyes. Sigh, I really miss watching Savior play, it's a shame really..

I think it's also partially the oversaturation of the scene - there's no special air to an MLG or an IEM or even a GSL because "Welp, there's another one in a month, and there's three other big tournaments this month so..."

It was OSL or MSL in BW that mattered. There were 3 of each a year, and they were so hyped it felt.. I dunno, there's just so much going on in SC2 right now it feels like it's impossible to really keep track of it all and even if someone loses one big tournament, they can just go knock a big one down the next week.

Yeah I think you're right.. it's really hard in the sc2 scene to become a bonjwa just because tournaments come so quick and in result the fanbase is so divided because there are people winning everywhere. I think we really need to redefine the term "bonjwa" in accordance to sc2 scene (maybe it's no longer to define someone who dominates the scene for a long time, but rather just multiple titles within one year), this way there will be more fans for one person and resulting in more emotional involvement when that person hits the finals. I mean, some people may already have the same opinion for who is current bonjwa but it is certainly not agreed by the majority.

I'm actually going backwards. From being a huge SC2 fanboy into SC:BW, its such an amazing game that I just wanted to see how it was like now I'm hooked. thank you so much for this, the Nal_Ra annoucement made me tear a bit.

I'm not a BW player and I really haven't followed it, just seen clips on youtube. So I can't really talk about this. However I would like to share some words of comfort. Sc2 is here, and growing in such a big way!
The SC enterprise is expanding and getting bigger. Although there might be many diehard BW fans out there, I think BW has had its glory (look at how many years it survived and how many fans it has still) However I would say sc2 is a welcome transition, and is one of the reasons that I am on TL at all or even know about BW. I'm happy for my BW brethren that they can transition in to Sc2 and I know many have obviously. I think we can look forward to many more fantastic moments, as illustrated by MLG Providence! And I'm sure many BW fans say that sc2 isnt as epic or as great. Well, was sc1 epic and fantastic the first year it came out? I say, give sc2 a chance and I'm sure it will give memories and experiences that are at least as epic. It's just gettin started

Oh, and I think SC2 does not spell the demise of BW. I think that happened by itself However the process is obviously accelerated when sc2 came out. I'm sad that BW is approaching its end, but I'm happy its transitioning in to sc2 I think it can give us 10 more years of amazing moments.

honestly speaking, the process accelerated because of the match fixing scandal not SC2.

Well i disagree with you on that. The BW scene was quite alive, but small in comparison to sc2, when sc2 hit the beta phase.
Back then, Korea and the two Starleagues were kind of the engine, that kept foreign BW running on and on. And since there was no plan to abandon korean pro-broodwar, the foreign scene would easily survived as long.

Very nice vid, to me Broodwar will still remain the superior game somehow, though i know im quite nostalgic on the topic and thus a bit biased. But what the hell; sc:bw meant and will mean something to me, that no other game will ever achive, and thats´s fine for me. However i think many of "us" will have to move on. If the korean pro-teams switch over, broodwar will stop to be an e-sport and be just another not-played-anymore title. While i still occasionally think about switching back to BW, there will be no opportunity to do so in the future, because i expect the foreign scene to completely stop existing one the heart of broodwar esports stops pounding.

That beeing said, im more than unhappy about this development, but i guess we all knew it was eventually gonna happen since WOL was announced.

I don´t bear any grudge against sc2 in general or the new players, that did not know BW, but matter of fact IS, that SC2 spelled the demise for BW. Huge prizepools attracted pro players and guys like "you-and-me" switched for various reasons.

An Era is finally ending, i think.
Broodwar for life!

Ahhh! Where's the rest of it?! What a tease!

Seriously though, that was really good. It made me a little sad inside. So much history full of passion, competition and friendship. I hope that if it does end, that there will be a documentary on the entire span of BW.
Even during difficult times, when I sat down to play the game, there were times where it felt like god has descended down and played [for me].

This is too sad, things aren't over yet.. i hope that things can go on past what some people here seem to think too. This is the kind of reason why it should, it's had history, real history that millions connected to. Surely enough people in Korea have the interest to keep it going as a niche like it has done for so long already.. it already defied all expectations. It's not aged any worse since 5 years ago. If a game truly is sport-worthy, why can't it continue?

This is what i think Milkis was talking about with his' only real eSport' comment. Western eSports has never even come close in actual feelings. No one will care in 10 years who won a million in a DotA2 tournament.. until there's the right game players and more importantly non-players can come together and truly appreciate then it will all feel subpar. Less that's said about SC2 the better imo.. take away the name and i'm not sure if it would be any more than another niche RTS community.

Even if the GSL was spaced out it wouldn't be the same, the game itself is part of all of this, the game so many loved that it grew into what it did. It wasn't forced, it happened because it was the right game. For people to just think it will happen all over again simply because a game has the same name is crazy imo at least. Personally watching SC2 does nothing for me, and it doesn't matter if any of my favourites switched.. because it's something totally different. Hard to explain but that's how i feel.

Everytime I see sAviOr I feel sad a little. Prodigy, outcast, forgotten. He was the hero that Gotham deserved but didn't need at the time. And then the Joker corrupted him. It makes me sad.
