hello guys, as always I come to team liquid for help. you guys are awesome and really rock.

I used to be very involved in computers and technology but the past 3 years I haven't, so I have no idea whats good now days. so I seek help!

I'm looking to buy a new "home use desktop" the hardest software on it would probably be autocad, other than that basic home use. budget could be up to 1k.

I also need a new laptop, I don't use it for gaming or anything like that, but i would like a mass multitasking machine i wanna chat, download music, listen to music, burn a CD and have many things running at once without the laptop freezing or giving me crap. I have USD 1,500 available for this.

Suggestions are very welcome. and again I really thank this community for always helping out. I really need to think of a way to give back to the community.

For laptops I'd suggest the Lenovo Thinkpad range. Using one right now, they have good specs for a low price, high build quality being quite difficult to break, only downside for some is the relatively boring flat black design. T520 series is my personal recommendation.

The new 13 inch Macbook Air is a really good deal if you're looking for a portable and reliable laptop with an SSD. It easily beats out the competition.

If you don't need an SSD or a slim laptop, go for a Thinkpad.

ThinkPads are indeed solid, well-built machines that can probably survive a nuclear holocaust. If you can navigate the impossibly complex range of Asus offerings, though, I'm sure you can find something there as well. I was looking at an N53 IIRC and it's got sweet specs and a decent price (that's actually much lower than your budget, I just realised). Won't game like the G-series, but good enough for everything else. Also, consider the HP Envy series, but HP itself is a bit iffy despite their sweet computers.

Are you building your desktop or buying? (If you buy, though, prepare for this thread to turn into a huge flame war TT)

Building a desktop is highly recommended regardless of what purpose it's meant to serve. For a standard desktop you can buy for 600-700 dollars you can build for maybe 400 with good deals on parts.

As for laptops, it depends on how much you're willing to spend. Asus is great for gaming, Lenovo is great for everything else (their ideapad lineup is not bad for gaming either I guess). Macbooks are nice, but obviously they're really expensive and they won't synergize well with a windows desktop.

Did you really just seriously suggest a macbook as a good deal?

On topic, I really like the MSI laptop products, can't go wrong imo

^thought that too lol. Although if you're talking about portability/lightweight but still having power, can't beat the Air, at least until all the Intel-class "ultrabooks" come out.

Your OP didn't convince me that you even need a desktop. Modern laptops are very capable. I have been quite happy for a long time now with my laptop set up on my desk, with a mouse and speakers attached. (Yes, it's a Thinkpad.) However, if you are going to get a desktop, I agree that you should build your own. Stop by the Computer Build Resource thread - the folks there are as knowledgeable as they are helpful.

I am pretty sure that if this was posted under the Tech Support forum you would have been banned for giving bad feedback. We all now that any PC or laptop priced equally with a Mac will beat the Mac in all categories.

OT: If you really want to get the most out of your money i suggest going to www.techbargains.com and looking at the PC's and Laptops they have listed, then look at their specs, and then go from there!
That is how I got a Dell XPS 15 which is usually priced at $1000 for only $650!

Off course, do this if you have a relative in the US who can receive the order once it has been shipped.
