For people that go on youtube often, you guys are probably aware of these "youtube stars" who make videos, have millions of subrscribers/fans, and acquire internet fame. Most people couldn't care less about being famous on the internet, but did you guys know they make a shitload of money? Nigahiga is the most subscribed user on youtube and he makes $162,720 per year by just making some silly videos and posting them. I don't know about how the average person feels about his humor but it's not that funny to me; there are people on youtube that I find a lot funnier. I first found out about him like 4 years ago when no one knew about him and I never would've guessed he would make this amount of money through his videos. Now he goes on tours all over the world! Pretty crazy...

Sorry massive massive pet peeve for me. That aside yeah it's actually very cool how successful people can get off of youtube, there are a few musicians that make livings off of youtube that are hugely talented I'm actually listening to one right now and most of them are much more musically talented than most pop stars.

While I don't think a lot of youtube stars deserve the amount of money they make (because I personally don't find many of their videos entertaining at all), obviously youtube thinks they are worth paying $100k+ a year.

My real question lies in how advertisers who pay youtube, think that their money is being put to good use. Nowadays, internet ads don't sway me to buy their stuff, perhaps even less so than TV ads. To me, advertisers are wasting money (the reality may be that internet ads are effective, I just don't feel that they are effective).

sc2 streamers also earn money in a similar fashion, right? just not as much (since there arent as many subscribers/viewers)

Well destiny makes a living off of streaming. I'm sure from his stream he makes like 4-5k a month to support himself and his child.

yeah I wonder who clicks on those ads anyway (apparently a lot of people) and who actually buys stuff from that ad...

Rumor is that Husky and HD each are pulling six figures yearly as well.

HD still commentates? Husky is invited to events like MLG but I haven't heard from HD in a while

In all honesty? I don't care. The kids funny, but he's also kind of lucky, by being one of the first to do it and being at the top he has new people giving him views all the time because they check the "most subscribed" list. But while he's doing that, he's actually also trying to forge a career, this is no longer his 'job'. He's in college for film-making and has produced at least one 30 minute show, with plans to make more...
I'm glad that a lot of entertainers can make careers and forge something bigger for themselves through this medium... I don't see the problem.

This guy knows nothing -.- . You get paid by adclicks and views, views a lot more so then clicks. If you are familiar with twitch/justin tv you can understand that they get paid based on however many thousand ad views they get. Nigahiga, as shown by social blade here: http://socialblade.com/youtube/user/nigahiga Easily pulls in 200k a year. As he is a high profile youtuber I would not be surprised if he was pulling in near the higher end value.

Also I get the idea from your main post that you are not happy that someone is making money doing this because you don't find him funny or some such thing, this seems like pretty petty jealousy.

don't get how that guy gets so many views/subscribers but with 912,046,862 views that guy is making a whole lot of money
E-Sports is competitive video gaming with a spectator fan base. Do not take the word "Sports" literally.

nope not at all. Dont get why some of you guys think im bitter towards him. I dont have a problem at all. I just mentioned that i think there are some other youtube stars that i think are more entertaining but i dont really care, they arent taking money from me. The main point was that you can make a ton of money off youtube. I knew you could make money but didnt expect it to be six figures

The way they set things up, these youtube partners can pull in consistently at least 7 figures of views at least weekly (and some of them post videos more than once a week) from a very specific and targeted demographic.

That kind of marketing is absolutely invaluable to any company.

RayWilliamJohnson pretty much ruins funny vidoes and makes a killing. His viewcounts are outrageous. I am sure he gets 30million + views a week.

Sounds like a lot of money until you realize that youtube fame almost never lasts past 12 months.

Well, it's a job like any other - meaning that you have to create content every day, which can easily take 8+ hours every day - and if they are good at it, well, they deserve the money.
You don't get subscribers just by being lucky, you have to provide content that a lot of people like, have to do that consistently every day (depending on the content) and have to know a lot about marketing and advertising yourself.

I wish it was as easy as a lot of people seem to think *looks at his 6 subscribers* :-(

Here is a good article:
http://www.businessinsider.com/meet-the-richest-independent-youtube-stars-2010-8#1-shane-dawson--315000-19

About half of the top 10 earners are doing it as a hobby/12 month fame while the other half are aiming to make a living off it.

All top 10 are comedians.

If they've found a cool way to make money then awesome for them.

This idea that everyone should have a supposed 'proper job' and make money by slaving away in an office is a relic of the old fashioned mentality passed down by older generations.
