This is a follow-up to Bethpage Black Golf Course.

I have the reservation... we play Bethpage Black next wednesday (8/17) at 3:15pm. I tried to get earlier but the phone reservation system was too busy to get through until 7 minutes after it opened, and by that point the earliest tee time I could get was 3:15pm. It's probably a blessing in disguise since it will start cooling off in the late afternoon.

I just got back from my trip to Canada so I was a bit rusty. I've gone to the range each of the three days since I got back. The first day was pretty terrible (struggling after 70 or so balls to avoid mishitting my 7 iron off a short tee 50% of the time). The second day was starting to look better (my mistakes were slight pushes or overdraws/fades instead of misshits). Today after a couple of minutes of warmup I was doing well with my irons and so I worked on my woods. With my 5/3 woods I had some great shots, and my mistakes were slight pushes or overdraws/fades again instead of terrible misshits. I sent a couple up too high or down too low but I think it's because the rubber tees I had weren't quite the right height so I'm not too worried about it. I even hit ~9 shots with my driver (9.5 degree S9-1) and had mixed results. I won't be taking it out of my bag when I play 18 tomorrow at Bethpage Yellow unless I'm doing superb with my 3 wood.

From the few rounds I played before I went away, I found my long game was my biggest problem, followed by my putting. My pitching and chipping are both quite decent now. In a typical round I have at least 1-2 chips/pitches that result in a gimme or a very short putt. Once I've got my long game to the point where I feel comfortable taking any club out of the bag when I go to the range, I'll start practicing putting a bit more... but for my round on the black course next wednesday I'm really just concerned about the long game. If I have a decent-looking long game but shoot 115 due to poor putts then I really won't be unhappy. If I one-putt every green and shoot 115 I'll be pretty pissed lol.

My injuries seem to be more or less under control. I'm able to hit more balls on the range than I used to without feeling like I'm risking overdoing it. Whenever skin on either of my hands starts to feel or look like it's getting sore or torn I just put some liquid skin (crazy glue basically) over it and it is pretty much 100% protected. My right hand/wrist does seem to get a bit sore if I hit too many balls but it hasn't been causing me a problem so I'm not complaining.

I'll follow up tomorrow with how my round on yellow goes! I'm also playing 9 holes with my neighbor on Sunday. I'm going to try scheduling one final golf lesson for Monday or Tuesday before the round on black if my pro is available (he's checking).

Fooled again expecting to read about an Asian man feeling uncomfortable at an exclusively Black country club.

Best of luck though.

Ah, yes. Bethpage Black.

The course that makes almost all grown men cry

At least that's what I heard.

I played Poppy Hills and Pebble Beach a few months ago and came out doing pretty well. For my first time at Poppy I managed an 87 while at Pebble for the 2nd time I played great on the front and shot 82. Hole by hole details are somewhat sketchy, suffice it so say that my tee shot on the first hole at Pebble was good and thats always the most nerve-wracking shot of the whole trip.

I'm glad to see there are people who also play Starcraft and golf! The big reason I do both is that they are both great forms of high level competition. Golf especially is without a doubt the hardest sport in existence. At least in my oh so humble opinion =)

How long have you been playing, Micronesia? Favorite golfers? Ever been in the gallery for an epic major? Heres a cute story: I was in San Diego for all 5 days when Tiger won at Torrey Pines in EPIC fashion!!! Yeah I know...I'm super cool (insert sarcasm indicator here)

On a side note...regarding pushing and fading the ball too much, a good quick fix I've found that works great with the driver (and the woods or long irons) is to pre-cock your left hip backwards after you approach the ball. This is specifically a remedy to pushing and banana slicing the ball. This will do two things: help close the front shoulder which has the tendency to open up when one approaches the ball with the longer clubs and facilitate taking the club back more to the inside. Both of these things produce straighter shots if not shots with a draw to get you more distance.

When I start hitting it poopy with the driver this is my go-to quick fix thats so wonderful I even apply it with great success in the middle of round. I got from hitting these little 260 yard slicejobs into the right-hand treeline or rough to hitting 300 yard bombs. Ok so its only 294 average but I like to round way up. Most golfers do =)

I don't have a favorite golfer although I was a standard bearer at a senior tour event for a few golfers including Lee Trevino and Dana Quigley. Gary McCord walked right by me also (I loved reading golf for dummies back when I was first interested).

I've been playing on and off for close to 15 years although I never got serious until recently. This summer in particular I've been working really hard to get better. My pro is convinced I'll be a 15 handicap soon once I get my act together.

Regarding my poor shots:

Usually if I push it it's not a swing-path problem; it's that I didn't close the club up enough before impact. Usually if I slice the ball it's because I hit the ball a bit off the toe. Usually if I hook the ball (instead of a slight draw which I tend to get especially with my shorter clubs thanks to my swing path) I messed up my grip pressure in my right hand because I wasn't paying attention.

I didn't totally understand your explanation of the thing you do when your woods are slicing... can you explain what you mean about your left shower and left hip?

I shot roughly 95 today on a par 72. I had a birdie and a couple of good pars, and a few terrible holes... :<

Still having tons of trouble off the tee with woods, and my left index finger was bothering me... I think the newskin was catching on the glove which hurts like a bitch.

The architecture of the green and green areas is something that really tends to separate golf courses into different tiers.
Bethpage Black and the likes are on a level of their own though, everything from the tee box to the green is so incredibly superb, it's breathtaking to be on a course like that. Golf courses are something to appreciate, different courses bring about different flavors and unique experiences within your own game that no other course will give you.
Congrats on playing such a prestigious course, and good luck, I'll be looking back for updates.

What specifically is so difficult about this specific golf course in relation to other ones? I have never played golf, nor do I know much about the courses. Are there more sandpits? More hills? More lakes? More turns and such? What specifically makes this such a difficult course?

Everything. The tees are longer with more difficult drives, the greens are tucked with hazards, the pins are tucked within the greens, the greens are lightning fast, the rough is thick and at some places completely unmanageable. I doubt it's kept at the same condition that it's groomed for the U.S. Open and such but nevertheless it is a treacherous course.

After I play the course I'll give first-hand information as to why it's so hard... one of the things is that you need your drives to carry pretty far to REACH the fairway.

Did a short practice with my pro today and got my 5/3 woods working decently. Was having trouble getting my driver to work but that's okay... I don't really need it. I should be able to reach the fairways with my 3W no problem if I'm hitting it decently (except for a couple). The problem is I am starting to peel away the skin on a couple of fingers again from all the practice... ARG.

I hope I'm okay tomorrow :/

Good luck tomorrow! Hopefully, the peeling skin won't bother you. I went to the range this past weekend and got a few blisters and it is not fun to hit when you hands are hurting.

I've been playing golf for about a year (actually practicing for about 6 months). Just like Starcraft, I lack consistency, but I hope to improve on that. Any advice for a new golfer?
