At the end of last season and at the beginning of this season, I've felt reluctant to ladder. Not out of fear of losing or anything like that, but that all ladder play did was make me frustrated.

Tonight, I lost a game I felt I had won because the guy made 5 or 6 banshees (either as I was killing his base or starting them just before I attacked), cloaked them, and killed off my buildings while he floated his into corners. I didn't rage on him or anything. I said GG to him after the game finished (as I didnt have a chance to once my last building got destroyed), I was the better man about it, but the anger I felt made me realise that I didn't find laddering fun anymore.

I love 1v1 though. It's where I get the most enjoyment out of Starcraft. I dont really enjoy team games very much. I've got friends who play and my girlfriend plays too, but they don't want to custom 1v1 with me. I still love the game, just not playing it where I have the risk of rolling PvP, or playing it with people wanting to stroke their ladder point ego.

Does anybody else feel this way?

EDIT: I'm taking out the word legitimately - it was a bit of stylistic writing from me and it didn't really define what I meant very well.

Yes, there is a small subset of you guys who don't have fun laddering. Everyone else enjoys it, and sorry to break it to you, but you didn't legitimately win or else you would have came out with a victory. How do you win the game legitimately? Destroy your opponent's buildings or have him leave the game before you do. What happened? Your buildings got destroyed first.

If you get frustrated by the game, take a break. It's not going to drastically change because a few people don't like laddering.

Losing is part of the game.

Winning is not everything.

try having fun with it. Do some fun builds, and not be in super try hard mode.

You're taking the ladder too seriously. Instead of getting mad at a loss, write down or make a mental note about how you can prevent that type of thing in the future.

I'm usually fine with losing, but the situation it happened in made me annoyed. I've pretty much decided to just quit ladder altogether and become a pure spectator like I was in BW. This is more of a venting post anyway, which is why I put it in blogs.

And yes, watch the game completely change and fall apart now because I decide not to play ladder. I apologise to everybody who likes Starcraft, but I'm afraid I can't keep it going anymore. I'm killing e-sports.

The problem is because you didn't rage. There is a famous quote - "The opposite of love is not hatred, it is apathy". Your issue is that you've suppressed those frustrating feelings so much that you've reached the stage where you don't care anymore.

I agree fully with this. You have to lose to win. (or win to lose?)
Try out fun stuff, like in PvP, Chargelot Archon or w/e

In-house games really save me from this. Sometimes you still get upset cause you lose but most of the time it's just a friendly competitive match that will help you get your spirits up I recommend you try it =) Cause when those games turn into a 50 minute slug fest where neither team has over 100 supply and its T3 micro vs T3 micro its amazing. lol

I don't find ladder fun, but for a different reason - I don't get anything out of it besides the points, and when it becomes a number grind, it feels like a chore. If I want fun/practice, I have practice partners to custom with.

I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I used to be able to hammer out 10-12 games a day when I had the time. But it's summer now and I've done that maybe once? And I really hate the new maps. That may be a part of it. The only other Blizz map that I've actually despised was Slag Pits after I got close positions one too many times. I've just been playing more custom games recently...

You'd probably have more fun if you just accepted that you lost fairly instead of bitching about how you won legitimately when you didn't

Overnight, Masters league has turned from long, solid, fun macro games to a clusterfuck of cheese and all-ins. I'll be back in a few months.

I think I understand where you're coming from, although we might just have the same symptoms with a different cause.

I don't like to ladder because every victory seems so hollow and I never really improve. Each game I play just seems so independent of one another, that it's rather irrelevant. If I lose to someone doing some weird strategy, sure I can watch the replay to see what I could have done different but it will probably be days or weeks before I see the same thing again so it doesn't even matter. Then in the games I win, I usually just feel like he made more mistakes than me or that he was bad and winning was only natural.

These reasons are why I like to play with friends/practice partners much more (although I have hardly any friends who play and practice partners are hard to find). When I lose a game with a practice partner, we can immediately rematch and I can fix my mistakes and hopefully come out on top. If I do come out on top the next game, the victory really feels like victory because I just overcame a weakness/defeat.

I played my placement match a few days ago. I 9-pooled an expanding protoss and delayed his expo. Destroyed his army 3 times before he went +3 mass dark templars and wrecked my buildings incredibly fast. I had made 13 overseers but couldn't find them at all nor did they come in time to save my structures.

I lost even though I demolished him.
I was annoyed and bothered, but I still technically won by the fact that he made DTs and relied on an alternative than fighting me (not wrong, just shows that I beat him in the main aspect of the game).

Frustrating, yes. But if you find something you enjoyed about the match, it lessens the blow.

I haven't laddered in a season and a half because can't get myself to enjoy this game. Watching is OK though...

Yeah, I'm in a weird place with the ladder right now. I've gone 1-9 this week, and it's starting to make me question some things. I played on a friend's account as zerg and I'm actually beating players that are ranked higher than my main account. I'm thinking it's time for a race switch to keep things fresh. Maybe you just need a new perspective?
