is it just me or is reading the automatic ban thread hilarious? For example the people who usually get banned really do deserve it and I go on to wonder why the bother sometimes. If you want to rant or hate, do it here all you like, but at the end of the day you wont be coming back. Its funny because the mods are usually so good at posting a reason or why the banned the people, and I've come to think of them as very fair, they always give second chances except for really bad offenses.

So thank you TL Mods for keeping it clean and providing some humor for myself :D

This post I guess had no real point, but feel free to discuss the troll situation on TL.

Yeah, I'm constantly amazed at the quality of TL.net compared to most other forums (especially gaming forums). I'm so happy that our mods do such a good job dishing out bans when they are needed, but also at helping newcomers learn the rules when needed.

I snuck into a new tl mods initiation and it was batshit crazy I hope they don't ban me for this but I hear them say this when they welcomed in the new mod. I think its their official oath for the staff.

The trolls gather, and now my work begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no third, hold no timing push, father no bad threads. I shall wear no crown and win no glory. I shall live and die by my posts. I am the mod among the horses. I am the watcher on the blogs. I am the fire that burns against the drones, the light that brings the nukes, the horn that sounds the Nydus, the shield that guards against the balance whine. I pledge my life and honor to the Team liquid Watch, for this blog and all the blogs to come.

The only place I know with better quality is HackerNews, and that community doesn't have nearly the volume of TL

Probably because all dumb and pointless posts get deleted. I'm pretty sure that already clears like 99% of trolling by itself. Post count is also a good indicator of a troll. I think the troll in TL have evolved to a point where the people they troll don't even know they are being trolled. Only the subtlest of trolls will survive.

Nah, I think only the B.net SC2 forums are higher quality because the balance whine there actually gets listened to.

Exactly. TL is a gauntlet. Strict modding (although not as strict as in the past) breeds only the best trolls. Those too weak get exiled, and only the best can thrive in an environment such at this. That way, you know that if any troll has existed for a good amount of time on TL, they're at least good at it.

Such as maybe Hot_Bid (dont hurt me!)? Hehe but seriously i think your probably right with the subtle troll thing. I might even be being trolled right now and I have no idea :O

EDIT: Also it might be the fact that mods instill fear into the hearts of the posters so well that they have basically neurall'ed everyone into good posts.

i think they're too lenient sometimes. I've seen some really horrible shit get 2 days. but all in all, they do a fantastic frigging job and i salute them all!

they're also very nice, once i got a 2day and wanted to explain to Hot_Bid that he misunderstood my post, i knew i deserved the ban but i just wanted to be clear about my post to him, we had a nice chat and hes a really great guy

i <3 you Hot_Bid :D

Strict threat of the ban hammer keeps everyone in check, and quite frankly, I don't mind it (we'd be flooded with 1 line topics, questions, and horrible forum games otherwise).

Everyone has a inner troll, some maybe be larger than others. Its good the mods suppress it well.

I had a chat with Chill on Battle.net. We were wanting him to play mono's with us, and Oh My God he is so nice, but when we went to invite him he had to play in tourney games, but was awesome chatting with him.

Some forums get really slow on the new threads. People don't want to make new threads that suck. That is great, but it leads to a ton of off-topic discussions in already established threads.

The Automated Ban List thread is awesome.

It's funny and educational because you see what some people get banned for and think shit, I've made some posts which could be close. It sort of embarrasses you into making better posts (but not really through shame, more like because you wouldn't want to see one of your own terrible posts to be framed in there for other Auto Ban thread connoisseurs to point and laugh at) or just to stop and think before posting and avoid making many posts at all.

The latter being my personal choice because let's face it, making good posts that actually contribute to a thread is pretty hard

Back in the days when I played WoW I used to visit Elitistjerks for pve related information and theorycrafting. This forum was absolutely beautiful.

The thing is, EJ covers very specific topics whereas TL is a really huge community with thousands and thousands of people talking about hundreds different and / or unrelated topics. Furthermore I believe it's the mods choice not to go berserk and enforce the rules, or create stricter ones. So I understand why TL moderation is not perfect, however let it be known that I definitely appreciate it.
I'd say that TL moderation is quite effective and strikes at the right places at the right times so it's fine by me

TL is certainly amongst the best on the web. Jalopnik used to be as great, IMHO, as TL and had some amazing posters but it was never the same after the Diaspora.

Of course, the biggest trolls on TL are actually the mods. so I wouldn't call it troll-free!

Yeah, that is the only reason I ever signed up. I am not much for forums because the internet is crappy at a lot of sites. I love TL for this. I have gotten a warning once and a temp-ban once, both were my fault for not following rules properly. Not that I was trolling at all, I just did not read everything right on a couple of posts. I have this fear now of the ban, but not that I am complaining, I think it is totally fair. I love TL.

Seems like vet users and mods troll a bit but it's mostly harmless fun.

I'm trying to just avoid political threads from now on to avoid the massive trolling there, outside of there people are rude but not necessarily trolling, just very blunt.

I have a question.

What is trolling ? Where is the line drawn ?

Wikipedia says
a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

While I agree about the off-topic messages, I'm not sure I understand why having the intent of provoking readers to respond would be a bad thing.

Every time I enter a thread or discussion about whatever possible topic, if there's two (or more) possible opinions on the said topic, I always try to see both and to get people to see both so I'll reply to someone's opinion with the exact extreme opposite of his just to see how he defends his or switches over and accepts the one I posted. I believe that's a good though process to have and it helps me to always see and consider all options equally and not judge anything too quickly.

Does that make me a troll ? Because I believe that's what discussions are for.

Are you a mod there or something (I remember someone saying they were).
You ever write a blog about the toils of Wikipedia?

I'm an administrator. I haven't. It's pretty bland mostly.

Except for the community as a whole makes verdicts on trolls, unless they are blatant. So things get sticky.

I post a lot on a message board for a college sports team that is about as good as TL, but they are a couple orders of magnitude smaller (if not more) and also have very strict moderation policies. So TL is doing an amazing job .

Gotta love the TL mods, they have been always doing a great job at keeping the forum civilized and because of that I think most TL members have developed a common sense of respecting the forum rules and respecting each other.
Go go TL <3

It's really not that there aren't many trolls - it's really just how swift the mods are.

When I first joined TL, I got banned once or twice. Learned my lesson about the quality of this site and I have come to appreciate that. TL is special like that, but there will always be trolls lurking.

I may be completely wrong, but I have a theory that the game StarCraft itself, attracts intelligent people. And considering StarCraft is what we all have in common, I think that's what makes this place awesome to be (combined with all the work staff & mods put into it). Literally thousands of interesting individuals who aren't afraid to think for themselves and state their opinions . And if you act like a douchebag, you'll be missing out.... or banned ^^

Go read the Bnet forums and you'll retract your statement. It is just that douche bags don't post on Teamliquid because they either know they will get banned so they don't register or they are already banned.

I actually miss the pre-sc2 beta days. We had a lot of fun trolling and being idiots in the forum and the irc channel. Thats also one of the reasons i don't post as much anymore, much of the hardcore fun of tl is lost. It's still pretty damn informative, but for me it was more than a news site.

I didn't really post much before either, but the forum antics from before sc2 beta were definitely more amusing. The smaller community meant a lot more drama in general. There's still lots of good stuff to see and the mods are keeping the forums quite clean, so I definitely don't regret staying for the wave of sc2 community members.

Oh god that "Foreigners still suck" article by rekrul comes to mind, that was a goldmine for drama. The old days were good but right now is great too. Thankyou sincerely TL

Still too lenient, but can't deny the mods doing their job. I wish they were harder on banning ppl who didn't read posts. Really annoying reading topics where dumbasses don't before posting. Some don't even read OP!!

lol, so you suggest banning 80% of the TL pop?

Go into the S.Korean chemical "castration" thread in general and you'll see what I mean.

Yes the difference between this forum and for example the swedish forum flashback.org if any swedes know it is huge, it was especially shown in the thread about the Norway massacre here and the respective thread on flashback.

I'm sorry if this is a little bit oftopic.... But is your post count actually declining? I see your posts all over the place and I'm almost certain that I've seen you with over 4000 posts.

All the websites I've visited with comparable activity levels have had many many more trolls and unwanted posters from what I've seen. TeamLiquid's quality is and has always been top notch.
