I love my mother, I really do. Not only did her amazing English lessons help me get a strong footing in the proposting world, but she has supported me in many aspects of my life.

Both of my parents had me fairly late in life, my dad was 45 when I was born and my mother was a few years younger (37 or 38). I was an only child, so I relied heavily on my parents for socialization and to be my play-buddies. This dynamic helped me view my mother as a friend as much as a parent. Truthfully, I see her much more as a friend than as a parent now and I often call her by her first name.

My mother is definitely a mama-bear type. She's short, stout and cuddly, until you piss her off, then she become a frightening woman with almost 40 years of martial arts training. She's definitely an oddball, as well. When I was a child, I remember her being excited to see Totoro with me and getting me a huge catbus mat (yes, I still have it). We actually bonded a lot over Japanese culture. I remember waking up early in the morning and going downstairs with her to watch Sailor Moon together. Later, my mom made me my first cosplay for Halloween: a Sailor Moon outfit (I'll try to post pictures later today). I was six or seven years old at the time and wasn't aware what cosplay was, but that one outfit started a trend that defines me today. Since then, she has helped me with 6 of my 9 cosplay costumes (as well as many Halloween costumes) and is currently assisting me with making my Nidalee costume!

Not only does my mom appreciate Sailor Moon and Miyazaki films, but, when I started middle school, we started watching more anime together and then started reading manga. While my passion for video games continued to grow, my mother's passion for manga expanded rapidly. Today, we own around 300 graphic novels from nearly 50 different series, all of which she purchased.

Of course, there are downsides to her passion for Japanese culture, though they are more amusing than anything. She took to a habit when I was younger of yelling at me in Japanese in public places. Apparently, she found that telling me to stop or wait in Japanese was more effective than calling out to me in English. While I generally didn't mind, when I got older, I found myself slightly embarrassed being ordered around in Japanese by a clearly Caucasian woman, especially when she did so in stores such as Uwajimaya.

However, as I mentioned before, as I got older, she became more of my friend and less of a parental figure. I feel completely comfortable telling her about anything I would feel comfortable talking to any of my friends about. Yes, from heartbreak to partying to sex. I know that may seem a little strange, but you would have to know my mother's personality to really understand. Truthfully, she's pretty perverted, open-minded and not at all judgmental. She is perfectly willing to drool over pictures of guys with me, and, when I was younger, attempted to set me up with some of her students (she's a high school teacher).

I'm really grateful to have her as a mother. My dad is enough parental guidance for two people, so it is amazing to have my mother as a friend. So if you ever see the two of us bonding over a few drinks, come say “hi,” I'm sure she'd be as excited to meet you as I.

Now, for some quotes from my dear mother:

"Hope you don't go all drunken slut reboundy--i'm sure you won't, as tempting as it might be." -After I got dumped for the first time

Me: Made it to work, forgot my breakfast sausages, though
Her: I've noticed. They are tasty.

“Wrrrrrong! This is just wrong!” Her response to this picture:
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

My faceook status: Happy Easter! Go forth and celebrate! Have sex in the fields to encourage the wheat to germinate! :D
Her comment: Uh, didn't I teach you anything? May Day is "go out in the fields and show the wheat, sheep, et cetera how it's done."

That's a pretty awesome relationship. I've never known anybody with a parental relationship quite like that. It seems like it can be pretty awesome for sure. I personally have a good relationship with my mother and we talk about a lot of things, but not quite like yours. Mine is probably considered much more normal than anything else.

It must be nice to have someone you can relate too, my entire family doesn't really care that much for any of my hobbies, I mean my brothers and cousins will play games with me but its not something they truthfully enjoy. My parents never even tried, just claiming games are way too hard to play(which kinda defeats the purpose of people saying video games are so easy a 3 fingered monkey can play them).

I always wanted to get into cosplay but living in the midwest its kinda hard to find a lot of people with the same interests, especially considering a lot of people around here are jocks and constantly push their kids to either something overly religious or into sports.

It's only creepy if you get a boner looking at them. I don't see anything wrong with posting a cute kid's costume. O.o;

I'm from the Pacific Northwest.

Yeah, location can be a major influence. Being from Seattle, there are a lot of otaku and gamers up here (Microsoft employees' kids, imo).

My mom supports my passion for video games (generally, we've gotten into a spats this summer over me not hearing her call for dinner because of my headset), but she doesn't play any video games, unless Bejeweled counts.

If you want to get into cosplaying, you should just try to make a costume. It's not like someone is going to invade your house to catch you doing it! The internet and a fabric store is all you really need and I know there are anime and gaming conventions everywhere now.

My mom has only done one cosplay herself. I don't have any pictures of it on my computer, but I can try to find them.

Generally, she prefers having me cosplay outfits she's made.

Sounds like a pretty great relationship to have. Nice to be able to share your hobbies, and not only your college results or whatnot.

One thing bothers me though. Why Nidalee? Surely an Akali (in the Kill Bill skin) or a Morgane (in the angry chef skin) would be much better? You should definitely poll before taking such life-changing decisions imo.

Because Nidalee is the #1 character I play.

It's always who I'm most passionate about, not who I would look "best" as or who would be easiest to cosplay.

Also, I want to stand behind people and say, "Did I mention it's mating season?"

Alright. You win. I just hope that there's at least an illusion of man-woman balance at whatever convention you're going to, otherwise it's going to be one very peculiar mating season. Not that there's anything wrong with it, of course.

I just got back from traveling up and down Japan from Kyushu to Hokkaido... you sound like a person who needs to spend a weekend or two in Akihabara, or even Harajuku. Ikebukuro is a cool place too, and there is Otome road for all the girl otaku out there.

Last time I was coming back to Ueno from Shinjuku, I saw three separate business men passed out in front of the steps of three separate manga shops and maid cafes. I liked to joke in my head that they hadn't missed the train last night drinking, and that they just needed to get there comic book fix but ran out of energy haha.

You really are one of the lucky ones. One of your parents shares one of your passions? and Understands you? Holy shit. That is truly awesome. And its great to see that you realize how lucky you are.

Plus I am not a fan of Nidalee. Morgana so much hotter and more bad ass. And Akali ofc, like duh...

I disagree, kind Sir.

I'd say Riku is particularly impressive for her micromanagement. She's great at warding of trolls, detecting cheesy comments and reacting accordingly, as well as impressive map control.

Her macro is a bit sloppy though. She never gets supply blocked which is good, but sometimes there's a lack of production facilities, so that her minerals tend to pile up as she masses a lot of units of the same type. She is vulnerable to splash damage and has a hard time breaking a turtling opponent.

Interesting.

I know that may seem a little strange, but you would have to know my mother's personality to really understand. Truthfully, she's pretty perverted, open-minded and not at all judgmental.

I laughed a little at this part. As a male, it's quite normal to see adult perversion from your father.
In fact my uncles, my brother, my friends all shared this openly perverted mind process.
Being judgmental is also quite regular, but open-minded much less!

At least you're mother has quite the awsome combination of being honest while remaining humble to new knowledge and less conservative ideas.

Thank you for the sailor moon flashbacks, while I was young that show was not only epic, but very romanticly sweet. I'm not gonna talk much about them sailor scouts, but I used to practice intercepting projectiles with solid roses, all while maintaining a steady pose and picturing myself in a fancy ironed black suit and the appropriate accesoires.

My father also liked to give me commands in his broken french.

Relating is happening, again thank you for the free and worthwhile entertainment.

An admirable relationship, I'm sure you would of never achieved the revolutionary role of first female proposter without her. Just... Don't let her sue random people if they flame you over the internet, that usually doesn't end well.

Ah, all of the girls must have fallen over themselves for you!

I still know the theme song by heart. Don't ever tell anyone in Japan you know the theme song in English, though, they think is the absolutely most awesome thing and will request that you sing it and then make you sing it to all of their friends.

Hmm, I have a friend who has parents just like your mom. He tells his mom and dad every single thing in his life, so naturally they hate me now. TT

I always did like to hang out in his basement... >_> Now instead my sister uses him for his hot tub. -.-

Wow, you have a great relationship with your mother. She must be a real fun person to hang with! Some descriptions of her remind me of my mother, who is also open-minded, a LITTLE bit perverted, not judgmental of others, and a great person to talk to about literally anything.

I spent a week in Kyoto, unfortunately I was a little sick and it rained a lot, but I spent a good amount of time by the river and on the older side of town. Never been to Nagoya though.

And there is no question in my mind those men certainly had a late night drinking somewhere or at a hostess club ect.... it's strange how you'll see people of all walks of life randomly passed out in places in Tokyo and no one really pays any mind to it :/
