So I got myself into playing League of Legends two weeks ago and I am hooked! I didn't like DOTA because it wasn't very noob friendly, but this game is much more noob friendly and if anyone is wondering about it, I highly suggest it, and it's free to play. My girlfriend and I have been playing it everyday and she loves it just as much as I do, which is awesome because starting a brand new competitive game with my gf is just what I needed. I was way better than her in SC2 so it was just her relying on me in 2v2s, but in LoL, she can actually get a better KDR "sometimes"  anyways, the main point of the blog is that I just bought riot points.. I bought myself 50 bucks worth and same for my gf. basically I just spend a 100 bucks on a game that is free but has microtransactions to gain revenue (small ingame items u can buy for real money like custom skins). it was an impulse buy and i can't decide if it was a bad decision or not. i made my gf super happy because she is ecstatic about buying skins (which is always a good thing :D). i hate my impulse buying habits.. i'll probably regret this a lot tomorrow. hahaha.

I don't really understand why you would buy RP after two weeks of play...you should still just be learning the free characters. I can see buying char and runes later on.
Please don't buy skins.

I've spent as much money on LoL as I have on SC2.
I won't say which was the better investment, but I haven't regretted either purchase

Skins seems little pointless imho and you can buy rest just with IP, but if you got lot of money, RP will get you things faster. I woudnt buy them though...

Skins and ip/xp boost are the only things you can buy with only rp, and it doesn't take long to save up ip.

I completely agree, though sometimes I get the feeling that the ratio of money they are cashing in to the amount of money they are spending to make the game better/balanced is off, but I try not to judge because It's not like I have their financial info or anything.

If paying for something makes you/your gf happy, go for it! So many gamers have a "I'm not paying for your service" attitude...IMO just do what makes you happy as a consumer just don't spend your RP on runes/champions since you can use IP. Buy lots of cute skins! Frostfire Annie is worth any amount of RP.

LoL is a great game to play when I need to relex from SC :D.
You may want to buy cheap IP champions, but its better to spend RP to buy those 6300IP champs. Since you will need your IP to buy runes. Don't buy runes untill you level 20 though.

Only time I bought RP was when they had a double xp/ip weekend last summer. My friends and I all bought those xp and ip boosts since they stacked with the weekend bonus, and we marathoned the hell out of some LoL for a few days. Funny enough, doing that burned me out on the game and I haven't played since. I never even made it to level 30. 
I've been thinking of playing again, but even though it's more friendly to noobs than other games in the genre, it's still not very easy to pick up and play. I didn't know half the champions back when I did play, they've added a few dozen more since then, and people are dicks if you don't play perfectly.

yeah you can, but i spend a lot of time on the game, so i figured it's worth it to make it more interesting for me. all my friends play it so it's nice to show off some cool skins. haha

Hahaha, it's hard to find good looking girls that also play games with a guy. Especially really nerdy games like SC or LoL. I knew she used to play WoW before I met her so it wasn't hard to get her into other games. Her dad loves to game so she was introduced to games early on since she's close to her dad.

The NA server isn't as bad. The worst server times are during patch days, which is twice a month. It's an annoyance at best however.
I personally wouldn't use RP to unlock champions. Just grind a little more for IP and you'll be fine. Like with most purchases, you should probably wait to test out champions when they're free before buying them. My main buyer's remorse are buying champions that I've never played into the double digits (e.g. Lux, Karma)

If you are the type of person that always wants to have the best gear, I don't recommend spending that RP On Champions or Runes until atleast level 20 (when T3/Greater is unlocked). Instead use the RP on IP Boosts and if you are impatient use it on some RP. And use the free champs each week, when you find one you really like then buy it with some RP. The main thing is don't buy every new hero every week, because they end up being free 1-3 weeks after release.
Why? Because it is more expensive than you think to fill a rune page and if you always want the best you won't want to switch champs once you hit 30. So you farm up a bunch of IP have rune sets for similar types of carries, decide to start doing ranked and realize you may need to play a tank/jungler every now and then and get frustrated.
However, if you don't mind the occasional bad game buy as many champs as your heart desires!

LoL is a fun game and you can't blame yourself for supporting those who make it.
Also, don't forget to check out Riot's weekly champion/skin sales. You save thousands of RP from buying stuff that is on sale so patience pays off

I got one of the champ packs ~2 years ago and haven't regretted except when I've tried to quit/cut down on the game. FML. There were less heroes back then though so the pack gave half, was relatively simple enough to IP unlock the rest, not sure how worth it is now though.

i don't regret buying them at all.. i got the coolest skins for mordekaiser, yi, and my gf loves these skins! was definitely worth it in my opinion.

Started trying out LoL with my bf too a few weeks ago due to a friend mentioning that LoL is more noob friendly than Dota and introduced new mechanics (like the bushes).
Its a nice break from SC2 since I suck at SC2 with my lack of experience in RTS and fail game sense. Then again, my bf played Dota semi-competitively some years ago... so he pretty much picks up the game so much faster than me.
TBH I'd never spend money on a free game since I'm a full time student and not earning any money yet, so I don't foresee myself spending on LoL anytime in future haha. If I do buy, I'd simply be using the points to buy new heroes and just try them all out, not on the skins though.

edit 1: I've spent about $80 on LoL since i started playing last summer. Grinded most champs with IP, buy sweet skins on sale for favourite champs or indulgences (Arctic Ops Kennen and Gatekeeper Galio ^_^).

No, you use your own account (or make a new one). Champs and runes will be unlocked automatically as incentive to play at the PC bang and not at home.

I think when you start hitting the upper ELOs, let's say from like 1.9k upwards, you might want to get a skin for your favourite champions, to differ yourself from others.

Lev 22, only play with friends, hate the way the game is so big, wish SC2 had those numbers (A much better game with a much higher skill ceiling imo, if its the 1v1 format that puts ppl off SC2 they should just play teamgames, we need a more competitive teamgame scene!). To the point, im level 22 and i never bought RP, spent at least 20k IP though.
