My "Who is Riku?" blog had a number of complaints about lack of depth, so I figured I'd give a story version:

I was a fairly normal child, though somewhat tall and lanky. My house always had cats, so I was fairly fond of them, and my parents decided the best car ride entertainment for me was math problems. Aside from that, I was just your average little girl. I chased boys and threatened them with kisses, I asked every Christmas for a white kitten, and I wrote all of my letters as capitals for a good year or so.

Second grade was treating me fairly well until I noticed I had issue reading the blackboard from a distance. From second grade to sixth grade, I wore glasses. They plunged me into the teased world of the "four-eyed." I responded... well, violently. Both of my parents were martial artists and I had been in the dojo since before I could talk. In fact, I think I knew how to count to ten in Japanese before I knew how to in English. Anyway, when I reacted to teasing with threats and fists, I fell head first into the socially awkward life of the geeky girl that everyone avoids.

In third grade I took to the habit of dressing in boy clothes, which went more punk as I reached middle school. I had always appreciated video games. Though, as a child, I spent more time watching my dad play them than participating myself. Every time he started up Wolfenstein or Doom or Duke Nukem 3D, I'd pull up a chair and watch him play, rooting him on and mimicking the monsters. As I reached middle school, I played the games more actively myself. I started out with FPSs, but discovered RPGs through the few friends I had in the band. Thus my true geekiness started.

I had few friends in middle school and the teasing was worse than ever. Since I was well known for punching the last person who taunted me in the face (he stole my lunch and dared to taunt me with it), the bullying was all extremely passive aggressive. I was constantly blocked from getting in classrooms so I would be counted as tardy, I had water poured in my sports locker during PE, and the girls liked to talk loudly about how they viewed me when I was a few meters away.

I took most of my pent-up rage out on the track. I was on the volleyball, basketball, cross-country and track-and-field teams, but track was my true love. Everyday I had some practice or another, and it kept me out of a lot of trouble I would have probably gotten into otherwise. When I got home, I ground my nose to the books until I was sure I would destroy the material, then I retreated downstairs to my sweet little PS2. That is, of course, until I found the wonders of MMOs.

My first real MMO was Ragnarok Online. I made an assassin cross on a private server with a fairly low rate. I spent tons of time on her, grinding, chatting, pvping, and made a lot of friends in the process. Though I had contacts, I had gotten braces just after getting them, and still felt like automatically had "nerd" tattooed across my forehead. During the day I was the tough, nerd who wore all black and red and chains, and at night I was the flirtatious and hyper "Ryu-chan."

When high school came around, I decided my look and personality needed a make-over so I could make more friends. It's amazing what some normal clothes and a smile will get you. High school went well for me in comparison to elementary and middle school. I made tons of friends and still found myself engaged in band, sports and video games. Though I rarely hung out with friends after school, my school days and lunch times were filled with jokes and chatter. When I got home, I spent my evenings and nights playing games and talking to my online friends, Admittedly, I didn't ever get much sleep, but I did well enough.

I never completely transformed myself for the sake of popularity. I still often wore combat boots and plaid skirts and definitely had a punk-touch to much of my outfits, but not the full-on way I did in middle school. The entire school seemed to know who I was, but no one really had the same opinion on me. Some people just thought I was a stoner, some thought I was just a jock, some thought I was a band geek and some thought I was a nerd. None of them were wrong, but none of them were right, either.

My junior year, I started dating an older guy. He was a sweetheart, but his friends were rather sketchy and I got sucked into their world. I did E, smoked weed, dropped acid, etc. I didn't let it interfere with my school or athletics, but it definitely gave me a dose of the reality that was fast and harsh.

I also became the captain of the track team my junior year and lead... well, myself, to state my senior year, shattering the school record in my main event (the triple jump). Suddenly, all of those girls who were so cruel to me in middle school thought I was awesome and had nothing but nice things to say to me. Part of me wanted to go tell them to screw themselves, but I decided to be polite instead and found myself with a huge amount of support. When graduation came around, I was more than excited to go to college, but I was also a little sad to leave all of the friendships I had made. I worked the rest of the summer at Game Stop and then was off to school!

Losing all of my friends from high school by going to college out of state brought be back into playing World of Warcraft. After canceling my account my senior year due to... well, disinterest, I started playing just after WotLK was released and gained a new-found passion for the game. After getting tired of PUGs, I rejoined my old guild and reformed my old friendships and made many new ones. My freshman year of college, I was in Army ROTC, which ate up most of my time, so I did not make many friends in my class. I also had a hard time fitting in socially, my hyper-forwardness was frowned upon by a lot of the upperclassmen females and I found it to be oddly like middle school in terms of bullying, just a more passive, adult-version. I spent more and more time with my guild, until I really felt like I had a family there. To this day, I still consider them my family, though, admittedly, we talk much less often.

Freshman year was a whirlwind of bad choices, too much drinking and exhaustion. I pulled through and corrected many of many errors my sophomore year, making tons of friends with the incoming freshman and finding another "family" in my dorm. This past year I experimented with a long distance relationship, which burned much of my social life, but gave my liver a much needed rest.

Now here I am. A mechanical engeering looking for an internship and entering her last year of college. I play video games in most of my free time and post blogs daily that are received with mixed reactions. The internet has always been a home to me and feels almost as comfortable as PS2 controllers and mouse do in my hands.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to make a flash game called Snugglestime Ale featuring an amazing, brewing cat.

Oh, and here's a picture to go with my story:

You still owe me some drum covers, slacker.

I only really got fun of in school for having skipped third grade. And that shit follows you, too. It was like...Junior year of high school and people were like "Hey you skipped a grade right?"

wtf person I've never met how do you know this?

Not only that but I started school one year early, so I graduated high school at 16. lols. Lots of age jokes and stuff...but hey, if the worst I ever heard was "You'll be graduating college before you can legally buy beer" then I can live with that. Haha.

Um.

You've given me hope my sophomore year will be better than my first. Thank you. I've never been depressed a day (ok a day, but not actually depressed) till I got here. The loneliness has been overwhelming. But now, hopefully, my sophomore year I'll meet new people like you ^_^

Obligatory 5 vote for effort, probably the most extensive and sharing blog i've seen on TL.

Your "social curve" is eerily similar to that of some friends of mine, with a few minor differences.

If i'm to give you any advice, it'd be to read some of the major works in feminist history when you have some time to spare. Starting with Wollstonecraft and onwards.

The situation you're describing is one that affects girls much more than boys, it's unfair and to a large extent unnecessary. While you obviously "turned out alright" everyone should be entitled to security and comfort as well as fun in school (pre-high school). Those who have a limited social experience before high school (adolescence, coming out of puberty) often get into relationships and group association like the one you're describing with the older guy and it often ends poorly.

I think most of us here will be excellent parents of a new generation with glorious prospects, born into a digital age where what you can do with your imagination is much less constrained. Not all children that our kids will interact with will be parented by the likes of ourselves who see past gender though, so it's my belief that we owe it to our potential offspring to consider "what if i have girls?". Such basic things like a child asking "what's the difference between boys and girls?" needs to be answered in a simple and resounding manner, but most importantly the key lies in what we do; our actions. It's hard for children not to associate with role models of their own gender and Disney and its likes do their bit to keep us in the middle ages.

Anyways, some feminist theory, yes yes! I realize this reply is quite unrelated and that i haven't shared myself, but i extend the post to other potential readers as well. Given the reaction we have to any "girl gamer" thread we have here on TL i see dark times ahead unless the matter is addressed. Raising all kids as you'd traditionally raise boys is a decent answer but far from perfect in that it's simply a bit too incompatible with the current status of society. "Girl Power" will sadly be needed for a couple of generations more before differences are weeded out and not in the form of Spice Girls. There are heavy hitters in the literary field who deserve to be read in spite of their mammary glands!

Read 'em TL!

Sure. I've actually considered blogging about it here...while few at school seem to relate I'm sure more on TL do. Depression seems to be relatively common.

Also my sexuality feels less accepted than it was in high school...

edit: I'm the same poster as above, just logged on on my high post count account to report the first reply -_-

Sure, I wasn't trying imply that they were equal (or even similar) in quality; I was merely referencing the quantity.

I love making things! Hands on solving puzzles using the pieces of information I've gained throughout my life, then searching for more! I hope to work at a small engineering company with diverse projects so I will constantly be busy with engineering and less with paperwork and bureaucracy.

Sure. I've actually considered blogging about it here...while few at school seem to relate I'm sure more on TL do. Depression seems to be relatively common.

Also my sexuality feels less accepted than it was in high school...

edit: I'm the same poster as above, just logged on on my high post count account to report the first reply -_-

I personally wouldn't recommend blogging about it unless you are prepared for the assholes. While TL has tons of nice, supportive people, it still is the internet are they are going to be trolls and jerks. It could be a good chance to build a support-base, though, so it is really up to you!

I'm here for you!

This was my #1 concern when the turtles were first blogged about.

1) I watched a decent amount of TMNT, but I preferred other shows (Beast Wars was my true love).

2) The only turtle currently alive is female.

3) I named the now deceased turtle after my ex boyfriend's WoW character. He was going through a really bad time and I knew it would make him happy. Also, the female turtle walked all over him, literally.

I'm not convinced.

Last girl who couldn't help but awkwardly post about her life every day. Who would insist with an unusual weird perseverance and making sure everyone acknowledged her. Over and over again nonstop. Turned out to be a guy, a very disturbed guy who got some random pics in the internet and would pretend to be a girl. Not only the last girl, but the one before her and the other one before her.

In my almost 20 years of internet I saw this same story repeat itself about 5 or 6 times. I never once saw a girl that was so needy like this who were actually a girl and not a guy. I saw this happen on different communities at different times. One of those were actually here at TL. I don't remember her name. But I'm sure some TL veterans will. (I was just a casual lurker back then) But so far all this girl's steps seem to follow her predecessors. I can almost guess that her next step will be photoshop a girl pic holding community related stuff (tl sign or shirt etc)

So yea, this Riku girl. I'm not buying this just yet

Heh, a daily blog on TL, interesting. I thought my rate of 1 blog a week was pretty fast, but it seems like i am convinced otherwise (then again, it is a blog).
Anyways, I feel like your story can be related to by a lot of people, myself included. It's a funny thing when you go from "loser" to "Awesome" during high school.

Jeez everyone is going on about Blogs and what is real and fake and bla, how about reading this one and commenting on it?

I think the blog was interesting, albeit many elements being typical youth-teenager-college life, but hey, that's what most of us live! You seem like a fun person just judging by your writing, but internet persona are never quite the same in reality, despite what everyone says to the contrary.

Anyway enjoyed the blog and looking forward to more in the future! Since you're on TL and I am a BW fan I can of course only urge you to glance at BW and give it a chance, even if you don't play it, it can be enjoyable to watch.

Edit: Beast Wars is awesome, I could for the life of me not remember the title of the show when I was a teenager and 2years ago finally bumped across it online and rewatched the entirety of it, so good!

You're a blog king queen. Although it's interesting for many of us (including myself) to know more about (moderate to hardcore) female gamers, don't you think you're leaking a bit too much information online?

Anyways, grats on making it through so far in a probably gruelling engineering program and good luck in your final year.

why do people push this line of reasoning?

the fact that i know someone's name and city makes them no less safe than if someone met them in a bar and asked them for their name. then they know their name and, logically, what city they're in. except now i'm thousands of miles away and on the internet, and the other person is right in front of them, possibly inebriated.

there is absolutely nothing to fear letting your true self be shown on the internet. it is a tool to expand your normal sociability, not a broadway stage.

Truthfully, I don't mind people finding my real identity from this blog, I didn't exactly hide it. However, finding this blog from my identity is difficult, and I plan to keep it that way.

Riku, as some advice, please don't pick a fight with a TL veteran, in the interest of keeping you here, it never ends well for the nonvet.

Perhaps grudge match?

TL hasn't had one in a long time D:

I wish my blogs about video games, how to make costumes and other such things got half this much attention.

Alas, they don't.

Sadly, while I play a lot of video games, I don't play enough to write a blog every day about them.

However, I promised myself I would make a blog a day, and a certain TL member has shown me how important it is to stick to your promises and goals. Thus, you'll have to excuse my non-gaming blogs, but I'll try to ramp up my mini-reviews.

All hail the NeverGG boobies!

Sorry Riku, you will never be able to reach her status here on TL.

But since you aspire to be the next attention princess in the Team Liquid Castle, the best advice I can give is to challenge one of the queens to a grudge match.
Maybe even make a whole tournament out of it, why not ask Peanutsc, Raeleigh and all the others to join in?

It''s a sad day when you wake up in the morning, blast on The Cardigans' My Favourite Game, while reading random blog threads in TL and your only response is: "what the fuck have I just read?"

If you're going to blog about yourself, make it interesting please. Everyone has a tough life, that's what life is: tough. 90% of people in schools are bullied, considered "nerds", it's not something that's new, or old - it's actually standard. Personally I think governments across the world should reintroduce the tripartite system into education ... It'd be one step closer to stopping this obsession about whining about having a "tough education."

Other than that, I hope you like The Cardigans' My Favourite Game....

why do people push this line of reasoning?

the fact that i know someone's name and city makes them no less safe than if someone met them in a bar and asked them for their name. then they know their name and, logically, what city they're in. except now i'm thousands of miles away and on the internet, and the other person is right in front of them, possibly inebriated.

there is absolutely nothing to fear letting your true self be shown on the internet. it is a tool to expand your normal sociability, not a broadway stage.

Thank you for this post <3

So who is going to create a Riku fan thread? I've never managed to read more than one sentence of her because it's just so boring. Reminds me of teenage girls that tell you about school and all their uninteresting teenage stuff and you're just thinking how long you have to listen to that shit before you can get it in.

Lol, you're really beaming the "I'm trying to come across as a casual cassanovian machoman, but I'm atually just a nerd sitting behind my PC convincing myself I could talk to girls if I wanted to" - aura.

And I for one love Riku blogs, they're always straight forward and guaranteed to bring some drama:

I've seen these shops before, you can see the pixels. Timestamp or gtfo

I know it won't win me sympathy points. For that I'd have to say how much of a nerd I am or threaten to end my life - create a persona that the majority can identify with or someone to feel sorry for.
But I won't give in. Maybe that's why I like Riku? Both of our personalities are vulnerable to cyber bully attacks. We gotta stay strong, girl. Fighting!

And thanks to everyone else who has shown me similar support. Every time I receive a PM rooting me on or letting me know I put a smile on someone's face really brightens my day. You guys are awesome.

Hi Riku,

I was in your shoes not too long ago (as in soon to be graduating, looking for an internship). Here's what I would recommend to help jump start your career. By now, your Mechanical Engineering classes are probably so small to the point that you probably know all your classmates, at the very least you may never have talked to them but you do know that they are the mech e students around your level. Start talking to them about what their plans are after school. Ask them if they have found any internships or full time jobs yet? If so, ask them how much they are getting paid (yes it is a personal question but it's not as taboo as you think it is. They will voluntarily disclose that information or not.) and last, if the salary is attractive, you simply ask, can you hook me up! A lot of companies offer referral bonuses so it is in your friend's best interest to get you an interview.

Career fairs work the best, it's easier for them to put a face to a resume. You also need a good resume, if it's rubbish, it'll get thrown away (I'll help you on this if you want). It's a good idea to get job offers on the table 1 year before you graduate, that way you can pick the highest paying, best benefits, most interesting work job.

I have no idea where you live but I think the starting salaries for Mechanical Engineers are 65k, it might be higher if you are willing to relocate. Hopefully next time you ask for help, it'll be about how to "maximize your returns on your disposable income". (Grown up talk!)

or find a rich guy and waifu him, get carried.
My better is better than your better

Riku that was a pretty awesome blog I finally read it. Big improvement on the previous one about you that I said was too generic.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

I made a blog for some (un?)healthy competition between us TL females. *coughandbecausei'mboredcough.*

I am not looking to compete with you for anything.

If you dislike people responding to my blogs instead of drooling at your feet for your possession of breasts, then go forth and post and many attention-demanding blogs as you like.

This is my blog and I write it for myself.

wow sometthing new a female dramaqueen

*hint* boobwiping doesn´t pay off, not even on TL ...
