Hey guys, I just got my first SmartPhone, a 2nd-hand unlocked HTC Magic with Android.
(phone stats)
Up until the other day I've been using phones don't even have WAP, so it's been soooo fun and exciting to discover what I can do with it. I giggle like a schoolgirl when I slide my desktop from side to side :D Honestly I am overwhelmed with how awesome this thing is, I love it to BITS.
I'd like some tips or advice if you have any.. but first I'll write what I've accomplished with it so far..
+ Show Spoiler + 1. I set a finger slide lock, so I move my finger in a secret pattern to unlock the phone
2. I downloaded Advanced Task Killer and close shit whenever I think I'm going to lag
3. I installed Handcent SMS for texting
4. I got SwiFTP to let me connect to my laptop via my home router. This connection seems really iffy, sometimes it will fail constantly and sometimes it works, maybe because the phone and router have shitty wireless range
5. I got Skype and eBuddy for messaging. I think Skype is pretty shitty, it has literally no options (eg file transfer) and I needed to get Stop Skype to ever quit it -_-?
6. I turned off my gmail syncing, because when I want to check my email ill do it manually. And I turned off GPS.
7. I installed Mobo Player and Vital Player to see if they'll play videos better
8. I got AndChat for IRC
9. I got keyboard language packs, and tried out this ap that lets you slide to type, but dont like it
10. I got Color Flashlight
11. I got ES File Explorer, it seems okay
12. I got QuickPic to try out, as the default Gallery is insanely slow and crap, though it looks sexy
13. I installed Dolphin Browser, its good but maybe a bit resource intensive, idk.
14. Lastly I got Star Trader rpg (spent like 14 hours playing it), had a look at some other rpgs but they dont appeal. Instead I got some snes and gba emulators to try out!
So I guess I'm looking for any improvements and additions to what I've already done
Some further things you could comment on would be...
15. Whats a great Camera ap? 16. And a trustworthy Alarm clock (ive got AlarmDroid to try out)? 17. How do you get Star Ocean working with sound processing enabled (it crashes because it has those weird voices instead of normal sound like other games - is there a ROM with those disabled)? 18. On your desktop, you can slide the top down to show notifications and running aps - can we configure more of these slide-menus? Eg being able to slide one from the bottom aswell as the top?
Thanks for reading, go ahead and share with me your favourite Aps and congifurations, and Roots or alternative OS if you really want (I havent read up on anything about these yet, I have no clue what a Root is but it sounds cool)!!
Edit: Another question, but about internet... I just got a new internet connection, after not having internet for ages. Is there any reason that my browsers, within the last few hours, are randomly unable to load websites for approx 4 minutes each time? They just time-out as if I'm not online, but my download and torrents continue unaffected.... I've used ccleaner a few times but i dont think its helping..

Do you have your phone rooted? There's some pretty cool apps only available to rooted phones.
A really really nice free alarm is just 'Alarm clock plus'
The standard camera that came with my custom ROM is perfectly fine. It's just labeled 'Camera'. I've also got an app called FxCamera that is virtually a standard camera with some additional features.
For #18 I don't think so, unless you make your own custom ROM to use that features it.
Some other apps to check out: Team Liquid app (obv) Emulator ROMs(I dunno if there's a space or not) for getting emulators + ROMs on your phone JuiceDefender to save battery life ROM Manager if you like testing out custom ROMs and fooling around with that stuff. SoundHound for identifying music and stuff. It works really great, even the free version. Titanium Backup for backing up your phone's data and settings incase something were to happen. Also very useful if you want to keep your apps when wiping your phone to install a new ROM
I use gingervillian for my phone (HTC Desire exclusive I believe)

I will look into roots
I have gameboy advance and snes emulator, any suggestions for gba roms would be appreciated. honestly i only really like rpgs, and turn-based ones at that, gonna try metroid to see if it sparks my fancy tho!
i have 8 gig sd card so plenty of room there....presumeably phones cant play playstation games lol? never thought to check ;p

the magic is a bit slower than other phones, prob why some apps dont seem as responsive, as developers use those other phones as a baseline
also, explore the HTC apps more. the htc clock app has an alarm mode in it ... explore around and see what you can find
also, FF6 for GBA do it

my magic has been fine on the whole, but lagged to hell at one point so i just rebooted it and its fine (rebooting takes freakin ages tho haha). advanced task killer reports that there is 20-30mb of memory free atm, which doesnt sound like a lot considering almost nothing is running. processor is 530mhz or something.
i played ff6 gba not long ago 140k or 170k? damage attack rounds with locke :x ill be happy if chrono or star ocean will work this time without bugging out after ive played 5 hours in each!!! re-downloaded the roms from random websites so hopefully i got better ones
w regards to my internet browser problem... i found out that windows firewall had re-activated itself, so i turned it off again. i dont know if this means that people on my network have free access to my computer (i made sure advanced sharing options are disabled and im set as a private network instead of public/home/work).
i dont know if this has fixed the problem, will have to see :x

You don't have to disable your firewall to allow a remote connection.
I don't know the exact directions for all OS, but in Win 7 just go Right click on 'Computer' > Properties > Remote settings > select the option to allow remote connections to your desktop.
If that doesn't work you might have to open 'Windows Firewall with Advanced Security' (can be found with windows search in bottom left start button)

ah i should have made it clearer, i was talking about my home internet on my laptop, nothing to do with my phones connectivity or anything to do with the phone at all. just my browsers on laptop kept losing connectivity to the internet, even when torrents were working fine
very tired now but cant wait to research some of the stuff thats been suggested later :D
