What is the big deal with Beats by Dr. Dre

Hey guys. So I have a question for you guys out there who are audiophiles and what not. Do you guys think Beats by Dr. Dre are worth it? Specifically the Studio around ear headphones? I had my friend get me one from best buy for half the retail price (with employee discount) and I would never pay $150 for the Beats tour. I feel like the only thing about them is that they look pretty cool and they are made by Dr. Dre. They also have good lows (bass). A friend of mine proclaims that Beats by Dr. Dre are the best and "shit on any other headphones." Of course, I hate it when people just over-generalize and display fanboyism so I disagreed and told him that for the price, beats are not worth it. I told him klipsch, sennheiser, shure, are much better and more worth the price tag. Do you guys agree? What do you guys think about the beats? Thanks for reading.

http://www.headphoneinfo.com/content/Monster-Beats-by-Dr--Dre-Headphones-Review-544/Conclusion.htm

There's a review. Beats are awesome if you've never tried a decent pair of headphones in your life, but they are overpriced as hell. $300 for a pair of decent headphones is just absurd.

Exactly, that's what I told my friend. For the people who have never used a decent pair of headphones, they are amazing. But in all honesty, they aren't worth the ridiculous price tag..

I just had a friend on fb post a picture of beats, I'm assuming just because he thinks they look awesome :/

For the price, they are definitely not worth it. I have tested them multiple times, and being priced at $300 is completely ridiculous. I use AKG K-240 studio's that I paid $100 for, and I think they're far better than beats in both comfort and sound quality. The bass doesn't stand out as much, but that much bass detracts from the music imo.

They're ubiquitous now, so I tried them at a store around when they first came out, and the impression I got was a generally okay pair of headphones that is about on par with a ~$100 pair of headphones from a "big-name" company like Audio Technica or Sennheiser, with some unbalance towards the bass, which I suppose is intentional. They're okay headphones, just grossly overpriced as many others have said. Save yourself the money and buy an excellent pair for ~$100.

oh. and one of his points were that "why do you think you see athletes using them?"... to that i said, since when were professional athletes audiophiles? almost all of them get them for free anyways as a marketing ploy..

ugh. i despise illogical fanboys..

They're not worth. There are far better headphones for the cost, the only reason they're popular is because they say Dr. Dre on them and look cool. Someone wearing Beats by Dr. Dre probably isn't an audiophile and probably doesn't have any idea what they're talking about. I mean, they're not horrible and if they were sub-$100 they might be okay... but $300? Fucking ridiculous.

It's probably been discussed to death at the head-fi forums, just look around there if you want something more in depth.

Like I tell everyone who wants to get Beats by Dre. Get a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770's instead, they cost less, still have tons of bass, and the bass doesn't bleed into the mids like the Beats do. The mids/highs are also much better quality than the Beats. Also, try the Audiotechnica ATH-M50's.

Never ever ever ever buy Beats/Bose/Skullcandy trash. Bose and Beats are WAY overpriced for what they are and Skullcandy is just awful sound quality.

They are good but extremely overpriced, also like someone else pointed out they are really heavy on bass but i imagine thats intentional considering the target audience of a headset endorsed by a rapper

My dad has a pair I tried for around an hour a few nights ago. After around 5 minutes I started to get pains in my ears and down the back of my neck. I think they are really really uncomfortable.

like the others above have said the beats have a mass appeal just due to marketing and appeal, but the sound quality is probably equivalent to a $100 pair of "studio" headphones

I try to convince someone that it's overpriced but apparently 'the fashion' and 'trend' makes it worthwhile.

Like others, they are nothing special bar the exorbitant price.

lol i had a argument about this at my work, trying to justify how you can buy the same pair of headphones for half the price (under a different brand)

Beats don't touch any other headphones. They are the cream of the crop. But they are stuck with an 'apple-ess' price tag. Reason being is because all these celebrities got paid big cash to wear them. And it worked so good. Dre is a marketing master, I mean, he marketed a white rapper in a black game. So of course he can push headphones.

If you are a true audiophile, you can't pass these up, but if you don't have cash, you can find sick headphones way cheaper.

Like other people have said, you're just paying for the name Dr. Dre.

But for other options, I will stand by my Klipsch Image S4 earphones till the day I die. They are not the be all and end all earphones, but they have the best sound and quality for the price of around $80. But don't take my word for it. There are plenty of reviews from respected organizations.

If you're that set on spending 300 dollars, buy some epic production Audio Technica goodies. Been in pro-sound for a few years now and IMO Audio Technica sound the best to me, but Sennheiser is a close, close second. I really think those two are top dog in terms of audiophile stuff.

Again, echoing everyone else, Bose = paying for the name, not the headphones or the sound processing. There's a pretty well known saying in the pro-sound industry... "No highs, No lows, it must be Bose."

lol.

I think the reason people like the Beats or whatever is because they're...Dr Dre. Similar to Bose, people just blindly pay for a name. *shrug*

They are pretty bad for the price you pay. I borrowed my friend's and they are worse than my ATH-M50s and my other friend's Sony MDR-7506. Too much bass that isn't as clean as possible. This was also due to my friend adding bass-boost to a headphone with already too much bass. For a studio headphone, it wasn't anything close to what a real professional would use in a studio. I wouldn't even pay 120 for these headphones but they do sure look nice.

With what logic can the quality of a product with the name of a musician/producer (whose music consist for the most part of rhytmic drum beat and talking fast) match that of 50+ year professionals on the field of audio? And I have nothing against DrDre.
Commercials might not always be entirely true just so you know.
The only reason I can't think of to put his name on that pair is for the marketing & probably so they can up the price. So what GTR said is probably true. I have headphones that are extremely popular amongst professionals & they cost me under 200$. All that said, I don't think those are bad headphones, just that there is probably a lot of air in the price.

If you want audio quality, I suggest you look into headphones used my sound engineers & the kind. Those headphones generally try to sound neutral and natural. If you however want headphones that make the music you listen to sound good only thing you can do is to try out every pair in the store. Every pair of ears are individual, you can't really go asking on forums what is good or not.
Only thing we can help you with is pointing out obvious flaws in the product but most of those are specs that can be found on the products homepage.

Yeah, same. I consider myself an audiophile and I know not everyone else is one, but holy fuck it's so tilting knowing all those people dropped that much cash for such bad headphones. So many better options for the price.

Step 1: make headphones u want to sell
Step 2: slap on the face of some celebrity that the type of people who will buy said headphone will admire
Step 3: make sure said celebrity has on a *tuff* face in the photo shoot

Not very good headphones. Only reason to buy them is if you like to show off and look hip and none of your friends are audiophiles .
