Anyway you can watch something old school like The Shining? Well, since you did say you like something modern and I can't think of any modern stuff that's really freighting.

There's not a lot of good horror movies out there, the entire genre is pretty generic. Out of all the ones I watched, I would have to say Noroi was by far the best. Not only was it a good horror movie, the storyline was brilliant in itself. You can also check out The Human Centipede, I'm trying to make it a meme on TL. Tastosis made a reference to the movie during GSL =P

Oh, there's another movie I would recommend.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1702443/
Seeing the trailer itself almost made me scream. This movie is so scary, you'll be wishing that it was cannibalism or torture instead. I promise that you won't sleep for many nights after seeing this movie.

The Descent is excellent. And this is coming from someone who doesn't like horror movies.

There's a pretty amazing B-line japanese horror movie called "Big Tits Zombies" by Takao Nakano Here's a preview + Show Spoiler +http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQLi1UiWo8E[

I second Uzumaki, and read the manga too! Both are great.
Here are some good horror PC games in case you missed them: Amnesia: The Dark Descent The Penumbra Series

Just want to say, I love that pic you've included in the OP.

1080p Amnesia: The Dark Descent playthrough:

Watch it and don't blame me later... it's scary like hell

If you are into alien films, I recommend Fire in the Sky, supposedly based on a true alien abduction story. It traumatized me as a child...

Hmmm, for a game, I've heard "Amnesia: The Dark Descent" has made many people crap their pants.
Then there's stuff like Silent Hill 2, always fun.
For movies:
I've heard "Let Me In" is very good. Haven't seen it myself yet though. It's a vampire movie, there's an American remake that's recent, and the original swedish one called "Let the Right One In".
Dead Snow is pretty funny, it's a Norwegian Zombie-Comedy movie. Subtitled, but still hilarious. Nazi Zombies.
"The Strangers" Pretty low key horror for most of it, building up slowly I thought it was good. + Show Spoiler +The Strangers is a 2008 horror film written and directed by Bryan Bertino, and starring Liv Tyler, Scott Speedman, Gemma Ward, Laura Margolis, Kip Weeks and Glenn Howerton. The film revolves around a young couple who are terrorized by three masked assailants, who break into the remote summer home in which they are staying and damage all means of escape.

Long time lurker, but this topic is awesome and made me want to post.
There are some really great recent horror movies out there, it is just sad that they don't get very much publicity over the mainstream generic gory movies out nowadays.
Some good ones:
Session 9- Its a sort of ghost story set in a abandoned mental hospital. The scenes are really beautifully shot. Its really good for the atmosphere. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0261983/
Trick 'r Treat- This is a really fun horror movie. Its basically 4 different short horror stories all set in the same town during a Halloween night and they all sort of tie into each other. Its less like jump-out-at-you kind of scary and more of a mix between creepy and black comedy. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0862856/
The Devil's Chair- This was an interesting one. I saw it on OnDemand one night and didn't expect much from it but it ended up being pretty great. Its about a guy who's girlfriend dies in an abandoned hospital and the guy claims that a chair did it. It is a little slow in the middle but the ending is really worth it. Its a little brutal towards the end, but it really makes the movie. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0837791/
That is all I can think of off the top of my head. There are some classic ones that you have to watch if you haven't already like: Rosemary's Baby, Black Christmas (the original slasher movie), Don't Look Now, The Evil Dead/The Evil Dead 2, The Thing (my personal fav), ect. I could go on forever.

Amnesia is probably one of the scariest games of all time, but from your criteria there's some things in there that you probably wouldn't enjoy.

For B-movies, I would recommend RoboGeisha
I'm going to keep my eyes glued to this thread--horror and B-movies are awesome!
