This is a follow-up from: Stop smoking - No matter what!

Alright, so just got home from school, and I haven't smoked since yesterday. I've had some cravings, as expected, but I've so far resisted the urge to go buy a pack. It's not too bad so far, but I bet it'll get worse as time goes by. I'm still very confident I can stop!

I want to say thanks to all the encouraging words from the other blogpost. Helped me quite a bit this morning when I really wanted a smoke.

Anyway, I'll just update this if I get any more thoughts.

Very proud of ya man! I remember when my dad smoked, it was a huge deal to my little brother and me. We were very worried for him, and it was actually a pretty stressful time. He too has quit and I'm telling ya man it only gets better, not to mention adding years to your life!

Anyways, good luck man. I for one will be checking in on your blogs and rooting for you.

get something shaped like a cig to have in your fingers and mouth. chocolate biscuit sticks, cinnamon sticks, pens etc all work.
Yea that looks just like Kang Min... amazing game sense... and uses mind games well, but has the micro of a washed up progamer.

Good on you for quitting.

I highly recommend buying some nicotine gums or patches because they help a lot the first month or so. You need to last atleast 3 months until you overcome the physical craving completely and atleast a few years to say your completely addiction-free. I still sometimes want one when I'm having a drink or stressed though.

The way I quit smoking, is I basically set aside money in a jar anytime I wanted to smoke and didn't. And then at the end of the month I would go buy myself some ridiculously unnecessary item like a nice watch or some new video games. I ended up buying a $200 watch in the first two months >_>, but hey, I haven't smoked since!

good job man. I also recently quit smoking (22 dec 2010) and until now havent touched a smoke. This after being a chain smoker for 6 years. (im 21 now)

the first 3 days are the hardest, but once you get to day 4 its smooth sailing.

I can give you advice that worked for me.

Dont fool yourself into thinking that you are strong enough to handle being around smokers for the first week. Stay away from temptation.
Throw all your empty boxes, lighters, ashtrays (however cool they were) and cigs away, or donate them to your favorite charity.
Keep yourself busy. At all times. Play a shit load of starcraft or games that need a shit load of thinking when you crave.
Try not to advertise that you are trying to quit. Some people will say shitty things that will bring you down.
Drink shit tons of water.
Sleep alot.
Try to stay away from booze for a while. I know that nothing beats a smoke with a beer. But dont.

Lastly dont give up.

wow I would do it the complete other way arround.

1. Go buy apack of cigs and place em well available to you if you can resist that you wont have any problem.
2. stay arround smoker all the time they will make fun of you but if you can resist that you wont have any problem.
3. keep memorable stuff so you can archiv it as memory and no present. look at them from a "ooh I remember one time" standpoint.
4. try to not eat a lot of snacks (generally eat less than usual) as you will get fat fast.

I did it like that my dad did it like that (he ate a lot of snacks and got a lot of weight) and my friends also.
Its about your personal strength that you need to build. you need to get into your head that you wont smoke even if you are arround smokers or the possibility of smoking. If you keep stuff aways from you it will help you maybe through the first few days but after that it wil be harder. Just try to 14CC it if your good it will ride you through the rest of your life withouth having to be a fanatic non smoker after.

@ whauz. I did that, the first few times i 'quit' lol. Problem was, everytime someone pissed me off like my gf i would light up. Anyway thats just the first week. Now i can sit in the car with my gf while she smokes and not be bothered. I buy smokes for her and dont get any cravings. I can even drink myself into a coma if i wanted to and not want to smoke.

But i guess to each his own.

All i know is that its totally worth it to quit.

So, it's 16:00 atm and I still haven't smoked. I've been around with some friends that do smoke, but I've managed to stay away from it so far. I dont really feel any temptations atm, so it's alright.

I did throw away all my lighters and ashtrays, mostly because I am confident I wont need em ever again.

So get your GF to quit!

Good luck, OP. Anytime you get a craving just read the posts in your blogs and think of how disappointed and sad you'll make a ton of TL people if you start smoking again.

I should try to quit coffee. It's such a crutch. Get 5 hours of sleep because of own masochistic SC playing? Eh coffee.

Anyone else quitting stuff? Maybe for New Years? I should quit drinks I think. They are bad. Not that I drink very much.

Switch to Cannabis?

Or just get off and not switch to another addiction that cost money, and is of no good value to your self

And what is your opinion of it now?
That it is a bigger waste of time and money than you expected or that you didn't realize how much damage it does to the body?

I have also quit smoking. I quit smoking Black&Mild cigars. I've been smoking 1/4 of a cigar every week. Not a big addiction but, never too early to quit.

Wait what... GHB that low on physical harm, do you realise how easy it is to kill yourself with GHB? But I guess being dead doesn't count as physical harm.

I didn't make the graph, nor have I ever used any of the substances besides Alcohol and Cannabis.
It seems about right though. I think it's quite idealized. For instance, Ecstasy as a chemical drug might be pretty safe, but that's only if you didn't buy it from a skeevy guy in a club and it's actually a cocktail of nasty drugs and animal feces. Do you see what I mean? Idealized.

My opinion of Cannabis? Lots of fun, cheap, a great way to relax. Have you tried weed, out of curiosity? It's very easy to accept the sterile facts: recreational drug use is a waste of time and money. So is almost everything I enjoy. Starcraft? Waste of time and money. Movies? Waste of time and money Etc. If you don't acknowledge any of the positive effects these things can have, then the argument that "they are a dangerous waste of time and money and nothing else" seems stronger than it is.

i quit 16 days ago, it peaked around 75 hours (insane headache, fever, illness) and ive been on codeine quite a lot to get by.

after 6 days the headaches were gone but i started to feel really depressed. ive had ~12 cigs in the last 10 days, tho ~8 of them were barely inhaled and instead just for satisfying a habit (only put them to my mouth because they were lying around). this "lapse" was mostly because the depression and weakened emotional state fucks with you. i did have a beer and found it absolutely necessary to have 1 cig because of that. 2 beers and i would have needed 2.

my tips:

1. dont bother going cold turkey straight away, itll kill you. dwindle down to 2 a day for a week before stopping altogether. you absolutely NEED codeine (painkiller) to deal with the headaches (cant move otherwise, let alone get to work)

2. get antidepressants in preparation for the aftermarth. dont leave it to the last minute like me, then get told theres no available doctors appointments for a week

3. if you have some party or event coming up where you'll drink, dont bother to quit until its passed. you've got plenty of time (years) to quit, might aswell get the timing of it semi decent

4. its absolutely okay to have a ciggie every so often when you're feeling shitty. it isn't a race to quit, theres no reason to make yourself feel like shit, so give in and have a few every few days if you need to. if you dont think about it in this relaxed and casual and positive manner then you'll be far more likely to just outright give up and start binging on cigs again.

5. HOWEVER you absolutely CANT keep tobacco in the house. if you want to chill out and have 2-3 ciggies coz you're finding it a bit hard and are feeling depressed, then you absolutely MUST get rid of the ones you dont intend to smoke, ASAP. just take out 2-3 from the pack and give the rest to some random person in the shop as soon as you buy them.

6. um i guess avoid threads like these and gangsta programs where you see a cool awesome guy smokin a cig and think "omgggggggggg i wanna be a ganstaaaaaa *tokes on the air wistfully*"

7. dont expect ANY sympathy from your coworkers who havent smoked or tried to quit before, theyre just not capable of relating or caring. plus a lot of people will be like "oh yeah i used to smoke but quit last year. was easy, i just stopped and that was that. dunno what the fuss was all about." its not worth telling anyone unless you find someone who found it hard to quit and will genuinely support you. nobody else gives a FUCK when you're ill with the flu and feel like you're DYING for a week; itll be a bit like that

as far as i can figure out, its not much money ($250 a year) if you smoke pouch tobacco (altho you have to be a millionaire to smoke normal cigarettes every day).
