So, I think most of us agree that itunes is shit and that there are better ways to get music onto ipods. however, i have an ipod touch and i use it for music as well as apps, so while things like foobar can sync music, im not sure if it can sync apps as well. therefore, i'm kinda forced to use itunes.
now im wondering why i have to sync stuff. i mean, wouldn't it be better if the ipod was just a big flashdrive-like thing? you just copy paste music files into the device. then, if the original files get deleted or moved, you can still have music on your ipod. plus, you can easily add music from your friends' computers instead of having to "sync", which causes you to lose the songs you already have. it takes up the same amount of space either way, so wouldnt it be better to just have a copy-paste system?
i dont get it. what are the benefits of "syncing" an ipod? can someone enlighten me?

You can turn off the thing that makes you automatically lose songs if you sync on a friends computer.

That's one of the big reasons why I chose a Cowon over an iPod, the flashdrive-style is just much simpler for me anyways.
I wish I could help you directly with your question but unfortunately the only obvious benefit to me is the user-friendliness and 'convenience' for people who are lazy when it comes to these things, and naming your iPod 'Titanic' for lols, that too.

Well, the original reason syncing was implemented was to make it easy to keep all of your music and video synced with your iPod by each time adding all your new music and video each time you attach your iPod to the computer. Honestly, this was a great move, as many people I know (parents, etc.) don't understand the computer filesystem enough to drag and drop music files.
Also, to answer your question about why syncing to a new library removes your old music, Apple obviously doesn't want you to copy your friend's music to your iPod, as that's illegal. They would make less money from iTunes purchases and the RIAA would not be happy with them.

well... when i delete music from my library it's most probably because it's bad music... and I don't want it on my computer nor on my mp3 player.
also, having it as a flashdrive would make it much easier to transfer music and easier to hack/jailbreak which is what apple does not want, + Show Spoiler +

Get a Cowon J3 or S9 which works exactly like what I have bolded. There are other pluses too, namely 52 hour battery life, superior sound quality and screen.

I had this problem with syncing too. I deeply regretted getting my iPod.
Nowadays I just use it to go to the internet through wifi and check emails.

iTunes is a piece of shit that Apple put in place to have control of everything.
The sync fuction is just about syncing the playlists on the ipod/iphone and the one on the computer.
I still remember my little brother raging in front of the computer because he wanted to copy files to his iPhone but iTunes needed to update first and he had to leave. (it's amusing how iTunes needs to update twice a week, especially when you don't have time to waste for it)
I'm not even talking about when you have a mac and a pc and you want to use your device with both computers...
I got a non Apple multimedia player and I'm so happy to just drag and drop my files on it, exactly the way you described it. I shouldn't be happy about it because it's supposed to be the most basic feature any device should have. Well you can't do that with Apple devices. And it reads any movie format without re-encoding / re-sizing. And it cost me a quarter of an iPod's price.
(sorry about what sounds like an anti-apple post, I had so awful experience with their products :| )

my itunes is screwed up now. ive always hated it but now it has even forgotten everything that i synced before. it shows me tutorials like i'm using it for the first time. i have no idea what happened. in order to use it again, i probably have to download all of my apps again, which will take forever.
right now, i'm looking into foobar2000, but it doesn't even detect my ipod, so i cant use that. even if i cant get new apps, i would at LEAST like to have some new/more music... sigh
oh, and btw, i got my itouch as a gift, so i didn't buy it. i figured that since i have it, i might as well use it. it's been nice having one, but having to deal with itunes is such a bitch

Ok, I have like 8 gigs of music on my ipod. My computer has been reformatted since I originally set it up. As soon as I try to connect my ipod to itunes now, it wants to sync my ipod (effectively deleting everything on it). I can't get my own music off of my ipod and onto my own computer thanks to their feature.....
Not fucking cool.....
I'm never getting an apple product ever again.

Just turn off the sync feature for music, and just manually add in stuff.

It's easy, just drag stuff from your library straight to your itouch, and then if you want to remove songs, just go straight to your itouch and delete them.

I was pissed off at iTunes so much I raged like crazy when it kept asking me for all my information (why the fuck do they need to know my birthday?) and threw my iPod at the wall. iPod just made a hole in my drywall ... fuck lol

Problem is that I also need to delete specific songs on my ipod (they got corrupted during a failed sneak sync by itunes in the past). I can't do that without a software upgrade on my ipod. If I do a software upgrade, it'll automatically delete the songs already on it.....
I literally can't do shit with my ipod anymore (not even the date and time work right), other than play the music that's already on it and use some of the apps I have on it already. It's literally worse than any other MP3 I could have gotten instead, because at least I'd be able to transfer music off of the player, or be able to update it without wiping the entire fucking memory of it.

You don't need iTunes to DELETE stuff.
I think you just need to hold your finger on the item for 2 seconds (might need to slide around a bit) until you are asked if you want to delete.
