Today went a little better than yesterday, but not as I would've liked.

Round 3:

[Date "2011.01.03"]
[Round "3"]
[White "MoreFaSho"]
[Black "Round 3 Opp"]
[Result "1-0"]
[ECO "E98"]

1. d4 Nf6 2. Nf3 g6 3. c4 Bg7 4. Nc3 d6 5. e4 O-O 6. Be2 e5 7. O-O Nc6 8. d5 Ne7 9. Ne1 Ne8 10. Be3 f5 11. f3 f4 12. Bf2 g5 13. c5 Ng6 14. a4 a5 15. cxd6 cxd6 16. Qb3 h5 17. Bb6 Qe7 18. Nb5 g4 19. Na7 (black's white squared bishop is one of his most important pieces in the King's Indian, if white can trade it off, he normally has a big advantage) Bd7 20. Bb5 (same idea) Nf6 21. Kh1 Rf7 22. Rc1 gxf3 (black gives up on g3 because it won't work here) 23. gxf3 Bh3 24. Rg1 Kh7 25. Bf1 (again trying to trade this piece off) Bxf1 26. Rxf1 Ne8 27. Nb5 Nf8 28. Ng2 h4 29. Nc7 Rc8 30. Nxe8 Rxc1 31. Rxc1 h3 32. Nh4 (diagram 1, black can't capture both knights at once) Qxe8 33. Nf5 (the knight on f5 is a monster, think bunker at your ramp supported by a planetary fortress) Rd7 34. Rg1 Bf6 35. Qb5 Qh5 36. Rg4 (black is running out of logical moves that don't lose material) Qf7 37. Qf1 1-0

Key moments:
My opponent surprised me by playing the king's indian defense. He played a really big lemon with 14.. a5? allowing me to quickly penetrate on the queenside 32. Nh4 was a cute move showing him that he could not capture both knights and getting a knight to f5 by force.

Round 4:

This game went very badly, I managed to get a reasonable position out of the opening, but I stubbornly insisted on playing badly to follow.

[Round "4"]
[White "Round 4 Opp"]
[Black "MoreFaSho."]
[Result "1-0"]
[ECO "D10"]

1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nc3 dxc4 4. e3 b5 5. a4 b4 6. Na2 e6 7. Bxc4 Nf6 8. Nf3 Bb7 9. O-O Nbd7 10. Qe2 c5 11. Bd2 Qc7 12. a5 Rb8?! (too much, instead a5 would be solid) 13. Rfc1 b3 14. Nc3 Bxf3 15. Qxf3 cxd4 16. Nb5 Qd8 17. exd4 a6 18. Na7 Qc7 19. Nc6 (diagram 2: disaster) 1-0

Again, if you have any questions, please ask. I would say the first game was a pretty instructive way to handle the King's Indian defense, my opponent was a master-level player and the game was pretty one-sided (again, one-sided games in anything are often good for learning).

I always try to shield slam face, just to make sure it doesnt work

Mmm good stuff - been a while since my last tournament Do you go to Berkeley/is this a university tournament or just a CA tourney? I've retired temporarily from serious chess but have been toying around in my head with ideas/plans to make studying seriously for a few years to go for IM/GM feasible.

Just a heads up: in your first 3 games you took out your name and your opponent's name, but you left them in the 4th game. Just making sure you don't mind your name being there :D

On-topic: Did you actually resign after white's 19th move? I know your position is pretty bad, but you're still even in pieces. Does he have any immediate threats to win material, or were you just pretty sure of your opponent's ability to win in that position?

Just a strong tournament organized in Berkeley (I live in Los Angeles), players from all over the world here. What's your current level?

Thanks for the note, fixed.

Yes, I actually resigned there, I'm 100% lost. I'm losing the a6 pawn at the very least, which makes that a5 pawn a quick pawn to promotion.

You can paste the notation in here, unfotunately you'll have to delete all my notes before it'll work, but that's like 10 seconds of work.

Ah that's cool, 11 GMs there! I'm around 1850 so just your standard scholastic drop out right now. If I did I've always wanted to study hardcore for like 6 months and try to clean up at the WO U2000 or something

Great job against the master! As a KID player that game makes me cringe (because you handled it so well).
