I'm surprised your relatives didn't read the fine print when purhcasing this for you or at least explain it to you if they did. It's fairly well known that cards like these are riddled with stupid fees. Fees to put money on the card, fees everytime you use the card, fees if you don't use the card, etc. They probably even spent money just to purchase the card.

I had this happen to my friend too.. it's kind of dumb because they do hide the shit out of it.

So annoying that cash is not considered a good gift in most cultures. I ask anyway...
I feel like this is an economically driven idea. Credit card companies can't make money off of people giving cash as a gift. Stores can't precharge you for shit you are going to buy if you have cash. Give cards are so fucking stupid. Why should you shop where someone says you should? Oh and the best part about those issue fees is they are charging the person buying the card, charging the value of the card, then charging retailers when you use the card. Shit is fucked up. I dunno, a gift card for the LCBO is never a bad thing. lol. Except, of course, the fact that they had to charge you for the card. haha, that's honestly the only gift card I don't mind receiving
too bad alcohol is so damn expensive in canada...

Uh oh.. I have rebate cards that are from Visa that I didn't use yet. I got those like during the summer too. I wonder how much it is worth now lol..

This is the reason why I don't ever buy gift cards or anything of the like. I mean, if you're going to buy someone a gift card, why not just give them cash or a check. It's the same thing, but much more convenient. I mean, even for people who go to Wal-mart and buy gas cards that save them 2-3 cents for every gallon, I don't think it's worth the effort. In one way, shape, or form, you are paying for it.
It's nice of RBC to give the expired $$$ to charity, but I still feel like the charges are way too steep. The way I see it, you should be charging them interest since they already have your cash.
